THIS IS AWESOME! THANK YOU! WTH do these tool companies need to make things so overly unnecessarily complicated; just to turn 1-2 screws! Theres zero reason or need for these crazy types of sockets/drivers. Phillips, flathead, Torx, or Allen would have been just fine! Additionally, it’s OUR tool/machine we bought…they need stop trying to control and prevent us from doing our own work/adjustments…My whole manual just states go to a dealer for the L & H what a joke! Took me a few hours to finally figure out it was a Double-D. I honestly thought the screw heads may have snapped off because I didn’t see any “slots” for screw driver, etc. In 25 years of working cars, woodworking, and IT Engineer I’ve never seen or heard of these types of crazy bits like double D.
Thank you! I tried several ways to make a tool to adjust these. None worked really. I saw this video, made the slots and adjusted my leaf blower. Worked great! My hat is off to you sir!
Finally, a remedy, Walked out on a small engine repair shop , I was told they can't sell me that tool but would be glad to make a ticket for it., told him I would not be back ever. Steve, thanks for the great info again as always. Thank God there's great people like yourself out there to help us out with tricks and hacks that tool manufactory are in it for nothing but profit. Keep up the great videos Steve , this one's a life saver, thumbs up brother.
I did this and it worked like a charm. Looked for the tool everywhere. I’m a very grateful 56-year-old chick who’s feeling pretty good about things right now. Thank you
I was a bit nervous about wrecking things but this worked like a charm! A 1/4 turn on the high speed screw fixed up my Yard Machine Y2550’s inability to run on full throttle. A very big thanks for this viideo.
Awesome in not only letting us know of a great hack to get up and going, but teaching on the various carburetor adjusting bit kits so that we can adjust many carburetors on the market. I have a chainsaw on my bench that needs the "Pacman" bit and i was at a loss on whether i would need to take it in for adjustment or figure out another option. Seeing i am in no hurry i am purchasing a similar kit unsure if i will do the 8 bit or another 14 bit tool kit. If i was in a hurry i could also do the hack you showed. Luckily i finished cutting down a 45 foot and 35 foot tree this week, and parcelled the trunks/limbs into 12 & 18 inch portions. I have a few left to cut however 95% done, so i can wait for the carb adjustment tool set to come in rather than having to take it in for adjustment now. So you have saved this old guy some money, and i'll have the adjustment kit to save me a lot more in the future as well. Cheers, Blitz out....
I was weary at first, but this took me 5 minutes with all the tools you reccomended I already had, and worked perfectly. I was even able to do this holding it in my hands without a vise.
My grandfather taught me this trade and he was really good at it!, but Thanks for showing me this trick, I was looking for this to make my carb adjust, just needs 1/8 turn on the low side to not die as soon as I let go of the throttle, and make that FU sound when you pull the throttle. :)
Great tip Steve. I've heard of people using a multi tool to make the grove also, and, a guy used an old style Bic ink pen, octagon side's for his carburetor adjustment. Thanks!
I usually just buy a new carburetor, but the one I have is only a few months old. I found your hack and did it in just a few minutes with a hack saw. Looked at your other video on how to do the adjustment. Now my grass trimmer runs great. Thanks for your videos.
Very cool! Found your video because I need to adjust my Ryobi carb. I never would have thought of that hack! I just subscribed.... I like your video style... I want to check out your other videos.
Well, I'm glad my video could save you from a carb catastrophe! Don't worry, I've got plenty more hacks up my sleeve. Thanks for subscribing and stay tuned for more epic content!
Awesome man! I've used this method before and have been running around town trying to find a spline tool for my Husky 128LD. I just put a new fuel filter and lines on it and now it only idles on half-choke, so I'll go peel that carb out and give this a shot. As always, good info, Steve! If I have a saw or any small engine issue I always go to your videos first. Thanks again, bro!
Steve! I just bought the tools through your link. You're such a huge help - it's the least I can do! Never thought I'd work on small engines, but it pays great and it's a heckuva lot more satisfying than selling advertising.
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Steve, the tools are great! I've used them on chainsaws, weed trimmers and a blower. Best investment I made in a long time. Thanks again!
Yea, I ordered a set years ago. but you can also use a dremel tool if you go your way. You can also use vacuum tubing or heat shrink tubing... insulated crimp on wire connectors, etc.
Great video! My Ryobi X430 trimmer was just millimeters away from the trash. Only a couple of years old but suddenly would not run at full throttle. Carb cleaner, fresh gas, etc. didn't help. Unlike the Ryobi carb in your video mine only has a single adjustment screw. I used your hacksaw hack to cut a shallow groove through the housing around the screw and the screw top itself. Then a adjusting with a small screwdriver was easy. And it solved the problem. Now it will idle fine and goes to full throttle without hesitation. Have a Bud Light and celebrate!
Great hack, Steve, love watching your video's. You've helped me sort my carb problem on a McCulloch strimmer and now to adjust those screws. If you were in England I'd happily buy you some beers.
Thanks brother I was trying to pull the plugs off and then I figured I couldn't and you've shown me the way lol, alleluia. I will be back to watch more.
Worked perfectly. Made the first cut with a junior hacksaw then widened it with a standard 12” hacksaw. Thanks to your video some grass in England got strimmed today. 😊
Steve, I really appreciate the vids that you are putting out they are most helpful. Thanks so much, And I share all of this info that you provide to all my backyard mech friends. I truly believe in your mantra. If you know something that could help someone else, share it. As a side note, I always make it a point to try out the suds that you feature and that are new to me . Again, thanks much Clyde form Canada
I just got a new DD for a free homelite weed whacker I got and it does idle now but not much else. Now I can get at those screws with the idea from this video.
WOW! SO damn obvious yet my mind never would've gotten here!!! Haven't got a hack-saw but have enough fine-toothed blades (and sawzall blades, and dremel bits, and die-grinder bits and thin cut-off wheels for angle-grinding) that I'll be using this not only for carb-adjustment H&L's I can't get to but for MANY other things through life now that I'll be seeing it as simply as "make a flat-head slot"!! Thanks again, not just for this vid but for the series you've produced it is required-viewing for people trying to learn their way to basic-competency w/ 2-strokes, truly applaud people like you (and billy ray, and reg coates - the 3 of you I hold in the highest esteem for having the best value-per-minute in videos + comprehensive libraries and, nicely enough as cherry-on-top, great personalities & humbleness that isn't false-humility or anythign - can't help but wonder if that's just the canadian-vibe, have always found I loved canadians in real life, maybe I need to migrate LOL) And again I'm so sorry for your loss, I hope you're coping as well as possible and remembering the good times!!!!
i used a hard plastic sleeve on the end of a small screwdriver and heated it so it fits snug on the idle/high adjusting screws, ( to avoid pulling it apart).... well it sort of worked, but did the job. i have a small McCullough ( re badged husqvana ) chainsaw with a two barrel carby. when its going well, it is a real pearlier.
Very nice! Also saw the other video on how to adjust it. Thank you I was trying to use a Dremel and it was making a mess and I couldn't get the right angle but the hacksaw blade will work
Why didn't Ryobi just put goddamn slots in there in the first place? Drives me crazy when your regular tools don't fit and you have to buy some more tools that only work on one thing! Good hack anyway, cheers. And an actual hacksaw hack too! :0)
hey steve . Glad I found your channel. I have a ryobi line trimmer that Ive had for 3 years. Mate I followed everything exactly the way you showed including your video on adjusting high and low screws and she runs better than shes ever done.. Thanks mate from Australia

So I took the very common pac man tool from my carb tool kit Ive never needed once yet & put it in my vise. (Very Gently) I tapped it with my pencil punch to barely open it up a hair until it it slid down on the screw tight. Now this tool works great to adjust my carb. Just be careful not to expand it too much, it only has one tooth so I left that in tact for the most part at least. You can find the pac man tool all day long. If you have a thin piece of fuel line it may slide down on the screws to adjust too? It has to be thin wall fuel/vac line. Clean these metal shavings out good before turning screws if you cut slots in the screws like in vid. Peace
Thank you so much, I have purchased 2 sets of carb tools and none of them fit on my Yardman weed eater. I used my dremel with a cut off wheel and put the slots in and it worked perfectly. The weed eater is running the best it ever run.
My saw has guards around the small adjustment screws so I have to dismantle the thing. Dumb bureaucrats need to be left on deserted island with all the gas and electric tools in the world but no energy source to run them, and no tools to do any kind of hack.
Hi Steve, Another great tip. Just wondering if you remove those screws The low & high and you forget where they went I believe one is longer then the other. I can't remember which one is longer the low screw or the high screw. Can you please let me know. I think it could also make a great tip video. Thanks
Hey Steve I have a Echo pole saw that is 2 cycle and the dog gone thing has no carb adjusting screws at all! neither low speed or high speed and of course it will not run unless the choke is left on about half way do you have any recommendation on what to do?.....replace the carb?.....find the hidden screws?......or ?

i have a ryobi expand all 2 cycle says you need a single d its a brass like where you need adjustment can you show me how to do this if you dont have the tool if you can or way to adjust it
Are these adjustment screws able to screw all the way out like older adjustment screws so that we can spray some carb cleaner in the ports to clean them out? I've already took the carb apart and cleaned everything except for these two ports and I'd like to go ahead and spray some cleaner in there while I'm at it just in case there's some dirt or grit or whatever in there. Thanks for the hack 🤙

Bought a 2023 Husqvarna 525LST Mark II, has a Weber carb. Its an Orange RedMax (Strato-Charged) trimmer, a real beast btw, I just love it!
It's mixture screws look like your basic spline screws but its not 21 spline, Webers actually take a 22 spline tool.
Trust me here, that 22 tool is nowhere to be found, not in the big kits nor sold separately either.
Most kits actually state " Don't fit Webers 22 spline carbs" in details.
I thought about doing this old hack, I did this back before special tools were so abundant but with my 5yr warranty here I just didn't do it. Dealers charge to adjust carbs, so screw that.
