When Jessup says we follow orders or people die, he didn’t seem to realize how right he was. He received an order to end code reds but decided to let them continue, and someone died as a result.

Also he could have said, 'see Dawson didn't follow orders and Santiago died' and then Jessup would be off the hook

The flip side to that: Nicholson and Cruise are so hugely popular that many fans don't even bother getting to know their characters' names. All they see is NICHOLSON and CRUISE.

27:30 Everyone has that reaction to that scene. By law, Kaffee has to tell Ross about Markinson. During a trial, opposing counsels are under obligation to disclose all witnesses and evidence to each other. Ross has just as much right to interview Markinson before the trial resumes as Kaffee does.

I've read that the scene where Tom Cruise imitates Jack Nicholson's speech on Cuba (about eating breakfast 300 yars from 4000 Cubans who are trained to kill him) was improvised by Tom Cruise, and Kevin Pollak and Demi Moore giggling over it was their genuine reaction. :)

A great courtroom drama. And excellent performances all around. Rob Reiner is incredibly versatile as a director. He's directed so many different classics in different genres. Comedy (This is Spinal Tap), Fantasy (The Princess Bride), Thriller/horror (Misery), Romantic Comedy (When Harry Met Sally), Coming-of-Age (Stanf By Me), Teen Romantic Comedy (The Sure Thing). Just an impressive filmography.

The courtroom scene is simply one of the best movie scenes. Everything about it is wonderful. From Nicholson walking in, the close-ups, Cruise drinking the water nervously, the timing, the cadence of their speech are all great. Nicholson’s eye movements and looks are an acting class in itself. So many other incredible details. To me, it is probably my favorite 15 minutes of cinema. And Jack and Tom’s performance are unparalleled. Always knew Nicholson was amazing. But Cruise’s performance matching him, made me realize how great he is too. I rewatched many of his other movies and marveled at his skills in them too. Before this, to some degree, I thought he’s a great-looking actor with rare screen presence and great charisma. He’s a natural movie star. I re-evaluated and realized his ability to make it look so easy is absolutely a credit to his acting skills. And Nicholson, what an incredible character and performance!!

As a Marine I’ve always loved this movie, Tom Cruise, Nickelson is incredible, they say he film his you can’t handle the truth serval times, each time was just as good as the first. Excellent acting by everyone involved. We didn’t call them “Code Red” just a “ Blanket Party. Throw a blanket over you and take turn punching you. All in fun though for us. Great reaction. 👏😊🥰

I like how Jack and Danny keep their respect for each other even though they are adversaries in the courtroom.
This was ‘92 and in ‘93 Cruise did “The Firm”. Feels like he did his stint in the Navy to get his law career going then left to a new practice in The Firm.
It’s a good watch if you haven’t seen it.

People don't give Tom Cruise enough credit as a dramatic actor, but this movie proves he has the chops. Nowadays he's making action movies and doing his own stunts and the acting in those type of films comes secondary to that. But early on in his career, he really was one of the greats. And Jack Nicholson is such a delicious villain. He is crazy scary and intimidating.
Also, fun fact.... Noah Wyle who plays Barnes in this film (one of the witnesses, a smaller role)... this was shortly before he joined the cast of a little show called ER that launched his career and made him a super star.

Walsh, and small roles by Joshua Malina, Matt Craven, Xander Berkeley.

This is a great reaction...your expressions are so funny at the lunch when Jessup shows his psycho power trip card. And yes, in the 90s, when this was made, female officers were still on the receiving end of stupid amounts of sexual harassment, the writers wanted to highlight that. Also, when Daniel tells Captain Ross about Markinson, you said noooo, but actually court procedure requires notifying the other side of new witnesses and evidence, so he was just doing his job 😉

The real bad guys of this movie are the Navy Medical Corps who, either through laziness or incompetence, failed to diagnose the marine's condition and just wrote him off as a malingerer thereby providing misinformation to his chain of command convincing them it was all just an attitude problem.

I was stationed in Okinawa when I had heard of this happening, it issued a discussion with Marines in my platoon about what we would do if under the same circumstances. We were told if you receive an order that seems illegal or immoral, follow it. Afterwards you may ask the Marine that gave you that order why. Disobeying orders is a great way to end your career in the military.

Personally, I liked the performance of Wolfgang Bodison as Cpl Dawson, he really had me believing everything he said: about his code, about being a Marine, about his beliefs, his actions (putting his hands deep in his pockets to show disrespect towards Lt Kaffee). And then... Nicholson on the stand ... exceptional.

Col. Jessup was a Man with Great Power. He saw himself as God, who answers to no one. He saw Kaffee and his team as insects.
The best way to defeat such a corrupt man is to show him that he is NOT God, that he DOES have to answer to others, especially people he outranks. You take a baseball bat to his gigantic ego.
When Kaffee finally challenged him to answer the question, "Did you order the Code Red?!", Jessup gave the only response possible: "YOU'RE GOD-DAMMED RIGHT I DID!!" He answers to no one! How dare anyone challenge his orders!

Excellent reaction! I've seen this film many times, and I've watched several RUclips reaction videos. Yours was one of the very best! Many reactors over-edit their videos for the sake of time. Unfortunately, they edit out critical details, and make it hard to follow the plot. While a reaction video, at least on RUclips, cannot include the entire film (as on Patreon), I think it's important for those of us watching to be able to understand WHY things are happening, especially since they may have not seen the film. You on the other hand did an excellent job of editing so that us viewers could follow the plot without scratching our heads all the time. Great, great job!

Great movie. You should see other legal dramas like Rainmaker 1997 or Civil Action . Also a great lawyer movie with Tom Cruz is The Firm. and Murder At First 1995 a movie based on true movie about injustice. Also Erin Brucvich is a great movie. Fyi I recently learned the real story that this movie is based on is very strange and shocking for one thing the Santiago character did not die. The Dawson character dies in a real strange way. Also a great boxing movie with the Downey (James Marshell) character is Gladiator 1992. Also another great movie with Tom Cruise no one reacted to yet which is not a court drama is Jack Reacher.

One of the 'quirks' of the military is that concept of the "names". In my youth I was a Cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy (the Air Force equivalent of the Naval Academy and West Point - the Army version of a Service Academy). Remembering the 'Names' of all the upper classmen, which was changed every 10-weeks. I had a hard time with that.

    Navy officer ranks:
    O-1 Ensign
    O-2 Lieutenant (junior grade)
    O-3 Lieutenant
    O-4 Lieutenant Commander
    O-5...
So, Moore's character, a Lieutenant Commander, is two grades higher than Cruise's Lieutenant (junior grade) character.

People have a surprisingly easy time overlooking that Jessup made a very compelling point at the end. He effectively said "People need to get their hands dirty and do what you find distasteful so that society can continue to function". No rebuttal is provided in the movie, and few people actually pay any heed to it, too wrapped up in "Yay, he said the thing, now he can be charged!".

    • @Crazy_Diamond_75
      @Crazy_Diamond_75 9 месяцев назад

A rebuttal is provided, just a couple minutes later by Dawson. "We were supposed to fight for people who couldn't fight for themselves. We were supposed to fight for Willie [Santiago]." That's basically the theme of the movie. Sure, sometimes society requires you to get your hands dirty, but Jessup's single-minded commitment to that caused unnecessary harm. Power should be used, first and foremost, to protect and safeguard. Jessup didn't do that. He was a reckless, abusive bully.

This was based off of a true story however in the real story it was 10 Marines that carried out the code red & the real victim didn’t die. 7 of them took plea deals & three went to trial where the verdict was basically the same however they did not get a dishonorable discharge. Sadly though one of the three that went to trial was murdered about a year after this movie came out & his murder is still unsolved. It was even featured on Unsolved Mysteries.

As a Marine veteran, I'm probably one of the few who think the Dishonorable Discharge was unwarranted. We didn't call them "Code Red"s but the act was something that happened routinely when I was in. A kid in my unit was thrown off the second floor balcony for stealing from another Marine, and another one was busted up so bad his eardrum was shattered for a similar offense. There was a Marine on float with us in '89 who got kicked out of the berthing area for not taking care of his hygiene well enough. He lived in a 5-ton in the well deck of the ship for months.

The reason Tom Cruise was moving the steering wheel back & forth going in a straight line was because older or classic cars had much less accurate steering gear boxes than what's available today. So going down the road means you're constantly correcting with the steering wheel to keep it in a straight line. It is possible to install newer style steering gear boxes to correct this, but many classic car owners will not because it makes the car less original or authentic, even though it does make them much more safe to drive.

You were asking when Kaffee was driving why he was turning the steering wheel right and left while driving straight , the reason is a lot of older cars like that 1963 Chevrolet Impala he was driving handled like that , they didn't handle like modern cars . Also when Kaffee (Tom Cruise) went to that bar to meet with Jack Ross (Kevin Bacon) to inform him he had Markinson and what he was going to testify to , during a trial both the prosecution and defense are supposed to keep each other informed of additions to witness lists that are testifying and both sides are allowed to talk to them and interview them , otherwise there could be a mistrial . It's a known as disclosure .

Then we went on a Med cruise but after New Year 1980 we sailed around the tip of Africa and up to Gonzo Station near the Gulf of Oman in response to the Americans taken hostage in Iran. I think we spent 144 days at sea before we got back home to Norfolk.
Worked in NTDS in the CIC / CATCC area. I rewatch it quite often and still smell and taste the JP5.

I second that I have wanted a reaction vid for Final Countdown myself. I would point out Top Gun was done 4 years later. Final Countdown was Top Gun before there was a Top Gun. Only thing missing was the rock and roll, still a good score. I also would like to see war films from the 50s through the 70s when the planes were real and shot practically, the CGI looses the gritt and real feel. Not saying CGI is useless but pratical beats the computer fakes.

He hast to tell Kevin Bacon that he has Markinson, it’s called full closure. If he doesn’t tell them, that could be a miss trial.

Conduct Unbecoming. It means you knew it was wrong but did it anyway. So it was justified that they were found guilty of that. Great video!

At one point when Tom Cruise was telling Kevin Bacon that they had Markinson, you look right at me, and said shhhhh
The funny thing is, I had been blabbing to myself about something that was going on in the scene prior and when you did that I was looking right at you and I stopped immediately what I was saying and said sorry ha ha ha ha

Harold spoke of "honor" but he said "we" were given an order to perform a code red when he knew that only "he" was given an order, not his co-defendant.. really honorable huh. He also disrespected a higher ranking officer (regardless of what he thought of him that is against the core principles).. also really honorable huh.

@@eviereactsAnd get THIS!: you and I aren’t the only ones. Rob Reiner (who directed The Princess Bride) famously said to Christopher Guest at the cast party something like “Chris! What a surprise! Thanks so much for coming out to support the film!” … having totally forgotten that he was IN THE FILM as Count Rugen. 😂 After already directing him as the lead in This Is Spinal Tap pretty recently. Guest had so thoroughly become Count Rugen that Rob freaking Reiner forgot he was even IN the movie they’d just spent months making. 😃

You can tell you were caught up in the court room scene, your face was all serious and it looked like you were intimidated by Col. Jessup. That’s when you know it was a great movie… IRL though, Lt. Kaffee would not have face any consequences of his “questioning or accusations” of Col. Jessup. That’s just how court works.

This why I love watching your reactions. You give good insights without over thinking it, and you know when to give them without talking through important parts. You make funny short quips, your facial expressions are gold lol...and of course, you're so beautiful, I can't stand it 😍 This film is an interesting story and unique examination of military life, but the acting performances brought so much more strength to the writing. Some of Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson's best work imo. But this was written by Aaron Sorkin, who's one of my all time favorite screenwriters. He also wrote The Social Network and wrote/directed Molly's Game, two movies that, if you haven't seen, I'd highly recommend. Especially Molly's Game, I think you'd really enjoy that. Ok, take care 🙂.

As much as I loved this movie, I do have issues with the ending. It doesn't make sense for the jury to find the defendants Not Guilty of murder due to the fact that they were given orders from a higher ranking officer, and as such they cannot disobey such orders, BUT then claim they are guilty for conduct unbecoming a US marine. It's either or. If you find them not guilty on the one charge, then it follows that you must find them not guilty on the other. You can't say...."Well they had to follow those orders, they had no choice. So they are innocent of murder. BUT they are guilty for conduct unbecoming, because they should've known better, and refused the order." That makes no sense.
I also want to point out something that I think gets lost in the middle of all this. No one in this trial wanted Santiago to die. His death was totally accidental. Not Jessup, nor Kendrick actually wanted him dead. And obviously Dawson and Downey didn't want that either. Don't forget, their plan was to tie Santiago up and shave his head, probably throwing some verbal abuse his way about respecting the code. Of course the shaving head thing is an odd sort of punishment for a soldier, I have to say. But that was their orders. So its not as if the Code Red was some sinister order given by Jessup or Kendrick, to beat up Santiago to an inch of his life. They were going to shave his head. That's it. Honestly, if there is any one person who is really to blame for all this, it would be the base doctor who misdiagnosed Santiago. If Jessup had simply been honest from the beginning, and stated how Code Reds are a common practice that has been going on before he was ever in charge, and he was merely trying to "train" the soldier, the whole thing would've likely been marked down as an accidental death and it would've never made it to the courtroom.
