    This is such a fun idea! Keep in mind though, any paint from pre-1950 almost definitely has lead in it, and there is no safe exposure level for lead. So, its OK to use it, just try to keep from sanding it without a ton of protection. Paint chips dont get into your body without you trying, but paint dust is another story. The worst thing is that lead screws up your brains ability to think remember, and be creative. So im saying this selfishly, because i want a lot more years of great videos from your brain!!

    This room reminds me so much of my grandfather"s basement workshop. Most of it was piece-mealed. I close my eyes smell the combination of saw dust, oil and the wood burner he made from a 55 gallon drum exhausted out one of the windows. It was the first time I saw baby food jars screwed to a piece of wood to hold nails, screws, nuts, bolts and washers. That was the mid 60s. I miss the days when he taught me how to build anything from anything...

    get a hand plane! you needed one several times in this build and you can get a half decent vintage plane so cheap. I think I restored 3 so far since this year.

    I feel very similarly about old doors with multiple layers of paint. I have countless photographs of doors like that that I have taken over the years. You expressed the 'unintentional collaboration' of the painters beautifully.

    Last summer I moved a door from its original frame to a frame that appeared to be the same size but never had a door. Added the hinges and the jam and realized at the end how out of square the frame was. This was a new construction, too! I think there's a reason doors come pre-hung these days, but you did a great job resizing this door to fit.

    Tip for your wishlist, seeing as you're using an impact driver: Long impact driver drill bits from SabreCut. Get the 152mm ones. I used one of those, a T25, to drive 1500 6x180mm wood screws. The bit was just as fine afterwards. And you'll never have to curse over the bloody bit holder being too wide ever again.

    And now all the cans can be shaken at once _without_ needing to stand the shelves back up!
    I'd recommend crumpling paper into the gap(s) instead of foam, since that (should) be less affected by random solvent drips, and crushing tubes of paper can make a fairly consistent result. . .
    But admit that I'd probably try the foam first, since I often have scraps of foam.

    Looks great but just one thing I am just about to finish up a lead remediation project in my home that was built in 1861. I can almost certainly say that cream colored layer is lead paint. The biggest part of the remediation was 8 doors very similar to your door. All of them had that same cream color on top of the original stain/varnish, followed by a pastel green lead paint and then layer after layer of latex. If you're not worried about the minimal exposure its no biggie, but lead exposure is accumulating so the effects will add up over time. Taking the cans in and out will cause some dust that contains lead to form. Same with opening and closing the door if there are any spots that rub. The epa calls it a friction/impact surface. Me personally, I would just give it a layer or two of clear coat to seal everything up.

    • @EvanMonsma
      @EvanMonsma  Месяц назад +1

      Good to know- I'm considering stripping all the paint off of it to be safe. But clear coat is a good idea, hadn't thought about that

    Regarding the clamping bonanza when cutting with a circular saw on the longer pieces, did you ever consider getting a sheet of styrofoam or xps foam and throw that on the ground/porch/a sheet of plywood and whatever you need to cut on top of that? I use that trick all the time, since the thick xps foam is plenty enough for the blade to cut into without getting close to whatever is underneath it makes everything on top super sturdy and safe, and no chance of bits flying or coming loose or anything :)
