I feel like if a strobe light is added then something is automatically more exciting. 2. These guys are flamboyant aren't they. They do a good job at it too. Their atmosphere really incites enthusiasm. And if you think it's fake I think they're genuine. Seems legit.
I am not music critic, I don't have knowledge. But for me it is one of the underrated songs of ABBA. It's clever, it's wild, it's full of energy, but very tidy.
I think you CAN be a critic. I think everyone CAN. My critique is based on what I WANNA hear as a person. And nobody can tell us what we like or dont like.
This song is a perfect example of what has been referred to as 'the one voice of Abba' which is basically when the two ladies sing together in perfect harmony for the whole song and it's hard to tell them apart. True Abba fans know about this. More examples of the One voice is on Eagle and I do, I do, I do. The beauty of Abba is how their style changed over the years but they still managed to maintain their sound. I know so much about them and I'm so happy you're interested in getting to know about them and their music. They are my number one band followed closely by the Bee Gees.

Yep, this is that video where Frida goes wild :) It's one of their glam rock songs. Similar songs are 'Watch Out' and 'Rock Me' (both sung by Björn). One thing you'll appreciate as you explore their work is their versatility. They produced songs in lots of different genres.
So long was not released as a single in Australia, otherwise it would have definitely been a #1. It was on the B side of Mama Mia which spent 10 weeks at #1. So you could say it did get to the top on the back of Mama mia.

@@Pulsar77 That's a great song. One of my guilty pleasures is Dum Dum Diddle. Yeah, it's fluff, often compared, unfairly, to Bang A Boomerang. Never cared for Bang, but LOVE Dum Dum Diddle. Too bad they didn't use a violin voice from the Mellotron, like in That's Me, for DDD, instead of a Wurlitzer organ opened full with vibrato on high. Then again I love to play Head Over Heels on my keyboard. Love that tango, so wish they had done the tango version of Fernando as an actual finished item. Thanks for this conversation, it's awesome.
@@cannedmusic Not the biggest fan on Dum Dum Diddle, if I'm honest. I think B & B considered it a throwaway song and didn't bother to write better lyrics for the chorus. I do like the keyboard on Head Over Heels. My favorite songs of their earliest work are Disillusion and My Mama Said, a very unique track and the closest they got to soul and R & B. As for guilty pleasures: Interlude No. 1, Pick A Bale Of Cotton, and King Kong Song :)
Earlier in their career, they thought the more flamboyant the more they would get noticed, beyond their borders. Once they broke though, the costumes seemed to get less glam rock and more in step with the later 70s. I agree on the lighting for this video. It helps highlight the energy of the song. It's always a treat though, to see them cut lose on stage though. Frida and Benny especially showed a lot of energy, where as Bjorn and Agnetha were more held back a lot of the time. Were they perfectly choreographed, like many of the artists today? No. But as a fan, that's what I like about them. Sadly a lot of critics knocked them for being too stiff. Had the group showed this type of energy more often, maybe the critics would have had a different criticism.
oh, you've reached my favourite ABBA song, I see. Despite that comment down there, this is ABBA at their best. Once you've listened to it around 500 times, as I have over the decades, you'll realise that. I'd be intrgued to see how you feel about the purely instrumental track Arrival, from the album of the same title
I do not know how they did it, but this song and one other, had that funky vocal sound/feel to it. It has a WOW sound. Background singers with the Bass, maybe?
We have to keep in mind regarding US charts is that ABBA was practically shunned by the music industry in North America because they set a dangerous precedent. They worked at and soon co-owned their own music company, and just as important, they didn't like to tour (which is how the American industry primarily generated revenue). Instead, they focused on Television appearances, occasional/abbreviated touring, and record promotion. They felt their family lives were too important. They didn't do drugs (though they drank), they were married and had families, and the each had their own solo careers prior to ABBA which probably got a lot of it out of their system. They also noted that they felt touring stifled the creative process. It also prevented the women from ruining their voices. Buddy Holly attempted the same thing, and look what happened to him. ;)
This is one of their many underrated songs that didnt get as much attention and praise its high quality really warranted. Few if any beside you have done a reaction on this one,which is a pity as it is a really good song,rocky,energizing,great melody as always,with ABBA song..the high quality in all they do is on a level that other bands cant reach. Maybe thats why many underate them,this is a level to be expected from them,but its a pity nevertheless.

ABBA recorded their songs in multiple languages did an artsy but low cost video of their songs and sent them out all over the world bypassy the major labels. This is such a fun song. The video really shows the different characters of the two girls. Frida extrovert, fun loving. (And not above taking a couple of centimetres off her skirt hem). Agnetha more demure, less demonstrative. In those early years even a little shy.
I got scared at first because I thought you might have a version with no video. That would be very bad. Instead it was the "Frieda Gone Wild" one. Now, if you are curious to see Frieda at her demure polar opposite, check out "En Ledig Dag". Recommend the version with captions for the sake of understanding the horrible pre-interview. A friend introduced me to your reactions to ABBA songs, and it's great to see you discovering and enjoying their music 😊👍 A, B, B and A got most of the touring-bug out of them during their individual careers in the 1960s, so while ABBA did tour as a group, they were focussed more on being a studio-group, interested in crafting and fashioning the best possible songs so that each song would carry it's own individual story, so touring less as ABBA afforded them the time to do so. So while I'm biased (😉...lol), I feel that you may indeed enjoy discovering more from their treasure-trove of treats. And don't worry about not listening to the lyrics the first time or two, just enjoy what you experience holistically with ABBA, as you may very well discover nuances along the way if you replay favourite songs or albums, which adds much to the magic of ABBA's music.

The lyrics are so clever: You think you're gonna make me softer with your fancy car; But I can tell you all your tricks ain't gonna get you far; They say that money's got a magic touch; But not to me, it doesn't mean that much, You won't have me tonight, all right all right all right all right. Just think about what they are singing about here - how men use their power and position to exploit women. This is typical Abba - upbeat and happy but a serious message inside.

I think they were just not choreographed. Agnetta has her style (she wiggles) and Frida has hers, which is wilder.
