I remember reading a fanfic script online somewhere called ‘Die Young’ that took place immediately after the cliffhanger ending. Basically nano Rimmer escaped Death and ran into Ace, they then used his ship to jump to the mirror universe and found the others, they then tracked down the nanobots and got them to rebuild the ship again (this time without the crew and it was the shorter version). After that nano Rimmer and Ace swapped places (hence Rimmer being a hologram again in series 9 to 12). This is my personal headcanon, and it lines up with Rimmer taking credit for saving the day in series 10.
dont know if you guys gives a damn but if you're stoned like me during the covid times then you can stream pretty much all the new series on instaflixxer. Been binge watching with my gf lately =)
Now that I think about it, the lady probably was Captain Hollister's mistress, but because this is a mirror universe, she's Rimmer's spiritual advisor.
on on the one hand, that unaired ending was pretty good and had a nice book end feel to it but on the other, rimmer kicking death in the balls is hilarious and is just so...rimmer to me.
The vending machine was voiced by Tony Slattery. He was huge in the UK in the late 80s/early 90s. For a while he was in everything then he just kinda disappeared from the public eye.
Actually fun fact, there was actually a 3rd ending written, where Ace comes and saves Rimmer. It almost happened to, Chris Barrie was in the make up and everything. Before a last minute change happened. I can't remember what it was though
Refuses to play on my tv and ps4 apps but fine on my tablet. Always happy seeing these i discovered the channel a few months ago and binged every red dwarf vlog over 2 days :)
I like to think that the unaired ending is Canon considering that it explains how Rimmer became a hologram again instead of killing off the entire crew along with himself he ended up getting killed by a flying soda can.
I don't think they abandoned Rimmer when they crossed into the mirror universe, I think its more they managed to get it working again and crossed in, but Rimmer passed them unknowingly. That's my interpretation anyway.
I honestly hate the ending of series 8, it's annoying that it was never resolved and I just find the grim reaper showing up a bit weird for red dwarf, the original ending was so much better
yes finally another red dwarf vlog! i also read the fanfiction that @Charles Teague read. i can actually say caesiumfrankolithicmixyalebidiumrixydixydoxydexydroxide! i spent a short time learning it a while back. i guess its good season 9 is over but now we have back to earth. thanks again for the vlog cant wait for your next one.
I always loved that black and white long coat of the Cat's... Particularly when public television ran first season Doctor Who episode after Red Dwarf...
Asexual Individual Yeah, they heard they were getting cancelled, so they filmed a new ending last minute. There’s a text crawl at the beginning of Back to earth you have to pause to read that explains what happened in the cut ending as what really happened.
It was a colossal fuck up as always with Doug who can never remember his own plot lines but it was part of the show, Rob was as bad he didn't even care about continuity @@davidvasey5065
1:58 That's okay. I'm a Doctor Who fan, but I've honestly not really been getting obsessed with it lately. Even though we're a couple months away from the show's 60th anniversary at the time of this comment. Though it might partly be cuz I already had a Who marathon, which I finished earlier this year. I've been getting back into Red Dwarf lately, which I actually became a fan of long before I got hooked on Doctor Who.
If you watch Chris Barrie on Carrot’s Lib (1983) he doesn’t have the scar. So he got it between 83 and 87ish. Best guess, he got it in a pub brawl over his first wife.
To be honest I don't hear a Dalek when I hear that vending machine. Mostly because Daleks sound more inhuman. They don't have that personal anger that the vending machine has
What episode does the short clip at 11:33 (blue-uniform Rimmer saluting through the window with Kryten, behind the orange wall) come from? I don't remember this scene in Tikka to Ride.
Here's how I separate each era of Red Dwarf so far: 1st era: Series I and II 2nd era: Series III, IV and V 3rd era: Series VI, VII and VIII 4th era: Back to Earth 5th era: X, XI and XII
Weird system, I wouldn't be putting series 6 with series 7 theyre totally different, series 1 and 2 are definitely theyre own thing, then series 3 to 6 is the second era, and then 7 and 8 I'd pair together, 9 I'd keep to itself and 11 and 12 paired.
Can't say I liked how the series ended (true at the time), but can say it's hard to imagine the show ending any other way than with Rimmer kneeing Death in the groin.
Actually, they found out they were getting canceled, and scrambled to film a new ending to end the show on at the last minute. When the show came back, the next episode starts with a text crawl that you have to pause to read that explains what happened. It makes the cut ending the cannon ending.
Pretty stupid decision to end the show on a cliffhanger if they knew they were getting cancelled the idea with a cliffhanger is to convince studios to give you another season when it's in doubt, if they knew there would be no show they should've gone with the conclusive ending so I question the validity of your information there.
I guess the wait for Back to Earth will be quite long considering the way you've handled multiparters so far and how much that means there'll be for you to cover.
Unquestionably the unaired ending is better. Problem is that because they didnt know if they would ever get renewed when a season ended, they reasoned cliffhangers would help that. It didnt in this case. I think it would be nice to see the unaired ending put as the default one now though.
Not a lot. Maybe I'll go into it a little at the beginning of Back to Earth or something. The only stuff about it online, as far as I know, is just speculation--there's no narrated animatic like with "Identity Within" or anything.
It would be at least interesting to mention the duke incident where a guy phoned up Rob Grant and said he was interested in funding the movie in exchange for letting him sleep on his sofa whilst he visited the U.K. and that he was the duke of another country
You should discuss the movie when you get around to series 10 since the operating scene from Lemons was based on a similar scene with Captain Hollister from the movie script and basically the entire plot of The Beginning was adapted from an early draft of the movie script.
What is there for her to say about it?The movie was a load of speculation nothing concrete formulated because Dpug couldn't get anyone to bank roll it so there'd be nothing to talk about except one rumour or another, would be pointless. @@mrcritical6751
How to fix only the good: (in my opinion) Soo it’s basically the alternative version but slightly different So after kryten waves at the crew on the other ship, the other ship gets sucked into a surprise black hole, supposedly killing all the rest of the crew. Dark but it’s the only way to get the rest of the crew gone so the 4/5 remaining crew members are alone again. The can that hits Rimmer in the head kills him. The rest of the crew find the dead Rimmer and simply bring him back as a hologram again. That pretty much clears everything but obviously there’s the fact that kochanski is not on the ship In back to earth but that was kinda explained in the season. And the fact that Rimmer keeps referencing how he saved Red Dwarf. But that could be explained by the fact that Rimmer did actually save red dwarf by getting the anti virus from the other dimension.
There was another ending Ace Rimmer was supposed to turn up and help Rimmer. But they changed it to Death last minute. Know real clue as to why. Other than Rimmer hitting Death like Lister said he would do in the earlier episode as you said. Also maybe the creators were inspired by Bill n Ted Bogus Journey Death being melvined. 🙂
apex2000 And it would’ve fixed that cliffhanger of how they would’ve got Red Dwarf back, except it still doesn’t answer which Rimmer it is now, unfortunately
보라해방탄소년단 It would, in the end rimmer gets hit in the head with a can, so maybe he died from that and came back as a hologram, then everything lines up, they could’ve even given hologram rimmer, the original rimmers memory’s

only found your channel this year, used to see you in phelous vids. Not a fan of MLP, but i love your content. Another great vid. Keep up the great work!
Definitely the weakest season of the entire show in my opinion. I re-watch the show constantly (its still on netflix in the UK, and I have all the DVDs/Blurays) but I almost never re-watch any of season 8. When the later seasons turned out to be of a higher quality I was pleasantly surprised. Still it was a shame that for so many years this was how the show ended with more seasons back them seeming unlikely.
Meh seasons 11 and 12 aren't really that much better they just start recycling the old format of the show and without any explanations for exactly how series 8 ended it's just become a show that is dragging on past it's use by at this stage, apart from anything the guys are getting way too old. Barrie has no hair left to be sticking up and Craig Charles is looking way too old to be getting about in punkish outfits. They need to just call it a day.
I rewatched series 8 a while ago and I personally found the last 2 or 3 episodes (ones where Rimmer isn't even in as a flashback/experience) of series 7 to be worse than any of series 8. On the other hand, the first half of series 7 has its own unusual yet striking atmosphere that's kind of series 4-like. Overall, series 8 has aged better I feel, even though the humour became even more toilet humour in part.
before the new seasons this episode was the show finale and it was such bullshit No boys from the dwarf sticking together just some dark ending and it was sad it didnt feel very red dwarf for them to leave rimmer behind I'm just going to ignore it though and accept the alternate ending good to see them back making episodes again though
I always presumed Rimmer was hallucinating about death too otherwise it makes no sense. I don't think the others abandoned him though, they obviously repaired the machine to go through to the mirror universe and missed Rimmer who was coming back the other way then everyone got trapped once it was destroyed again. I did hear about the alternative ending but I hadn't seen it and I have to say that is ten times better than the way they chose to go but by this point Doug's inability to ever do proper conclusions to anything had become predictable and I knew there'd be no explanation about any of it once series 9 finally came along a decade later and I was right. It's the only sloppy thing about Red Dwarf the sense of plot continuity is just slack by Doug and I know for a fact Rob didn't even consider continuity important and it shows and just makes the show look amateur and half arsed at times. It's a shame.
It was a quite different season, and I can't deny that I liked it less than the others, but..... I know shows that didn't ever get to reach this high, so.... eh it came and went, whatever
Considering how the cast still can't remember how it's pronounced in the Series 8 DVD documentary, wouldn't be surprised if fans memorise it much better than the cast🤣
Sorry to anyone who can't get the video to load. I contacted RUclips about it and they sent a form letter totally ignoring what the problem is. This is what they suggested: - Clear cache and cookies - Update your browser or application version - Use other browsers - Reset or restart your device/computer - Use other device So, apparently the issue is with all of you, and not them. Not that I expected a helpful response, but at least I can say I tried. But I mean, feel free to try that stuff, maybe it'll help? EDIT: I heard back from them again, and they said the video is fine on their end, so that's weird. Maybe whatever it was worked itself out. Here are some more things they suggested: - Choose lower video quality (such as 240p and 360p) by clicking Settings in the video player. The player will remember this for future playbacks until you close your browser. - Start the video and then click the Pause button immediately. Wait for the gray video progress bar to load a bit before clicking Play. - If on a computer, use a browser that supports the latest video codecs like VP9, such as Chrome or Firefox. Obvious stuff, but I wan'ted to pass it along anyway.
Cyborcat Seems to be working on my phone now - it wasn't for a while. I did nothing. I suspect it's one of those things where they've pretended it was you and then fixed it without saying anything.
It's weird, I couldn't watch this video nor another one from another channel released on the same day but every other video I could. It's worked itself out now for both videos so make what you will of that.
Gonna guess others have contacted you, but just in case: your next video in this series is blocked for copyright, at least, in the US. I mention it because you haven't pulled it down, like most RUclipsrs do while working on fixing the problem.
If the second ending to this had been aired, I would have liked it a lot better and it would have also made sense for where Season 9 (Back to Earth) left off. After first seeing season 8, I thought it would have been the end, seeings as everything was destroyed and everyone else was dead. Even Captain Hollister sending everyone to their deaths should have hinted on that. While there were some funny moments at the beginning, I didn't really like Only the Good, mainly because they should have used the alternate ending. It would have made a lot more sense. Otherwise, end the show right there.
I liked Back to Earth as well, it wasn’t perfect but I appreciated what they were going for. That being said I’m still glad they went back to a more traditional sitcom format for series 10-12.
Series 8 started badly, dipped in the middle, and went downhill from there. The less said about the end, the better. I hated it on release in the 90s, on rewatch in the noughties, 2010s, and to this very day. Thank God Dave/UKTV resurrected Red Dwarf so it didn't end on this rectal cancerous polyp of a series.
I disagree, I don't see 11 and 12 as brilliant, theyre just drag on carrying on the way the show used to be when they were all just floating around the corridors of RD. Its fine but it isn't doing anything new and the style of sitcom has changed so much since RD started that this type of sitcom is now looking badly out of date with how TV is these days @@lazy1119
Rob Grant was hardly much better than Doug he didn't even consider continuity important and Backwards was a fucking mess and he was involved in that so your statement is rubbish.

Here's how I separate each era of Red Dwarf so far:
1st era: Series I and II
2nd era: Series III, IV and V
3rd era: Series VI, VII and VIII
4th era: Back to Earth
5th era: X, XI and XII
“Before rob grant left”
“The crap made after”
I prefer to categorise it into three: The classic era (series 1 to 6), the post-Rob Grant Era (series 7 and 8) and the Dave era (series 9 to 12).
Series 11 and 12 are amazing

If they ever choose to make the real season 9, I don't think anyone would object

*sigh* I guess people aren't going to leave me alone about it until I take it down.
Ah, finally! We can now go back to the real Dwarf... after the BtE, of course. Yet I still prefer Back to Earth over s8.
series 8 is mediocre at best but luckily back to earth is fantastic! though a lot of fans seem to hate it
I dont know why.I love it.Also,it introduced me to one of my favorite made up word:Uncrop
Its not random rimmer is on a burning ship and was guna die so wasnt pointless
your back to earth video has been blocked by the BBC even though it wasnt made or shown on BBC
Hmmmmmm ok the BBC
So your videos keep freezing on RUclips and only your videos. Something may be going on with your channel
There's a pinned comment about this.
I’ve said it once.. I’ll say it a thousand times.. once rob grant left, it was beyond awful
the first two series doug did by himself werent great, series 7 has its highlights though, series 10 11 and 12 are absolutley brilliant.
Not a Dr. Who fan? Unsubscribe, unfriend, and unfollow.
The show is really sexist and homophobic at this point.
Yeah, it's kind of a bummer.
I wonder how they came up with that chemical. Some of those actually do exist in chemistry, and some formulas do actually sound that goofy. So it almost sounds like a real thing, except for the rixy part.Ive never heard of such a compound.
on RUclips there's a documentary about s8 called the tank. it has stuff about the chemical at the very end
