  • A few hours before the start of the AfD federal party conference in Essen, there was a first clash between demonstrators and the police on Saturday morning at around 5.45 a.m. A large group of people tried to overcome a roadblock, reported a police spokeswoman. This was prevented by a hundred-man force using pepper spray and batons. It was not immediately known whether there were any injuries among the demonstrators. Before that, the night into Friday had been generally quiet, the spokeswoman continued.
The AfD is holding a federal party conference in the Grugahalle in Essen on Saturday and Sunday. Up to 100,000 people are expected to attend counter-demonstrations and events. The police have several thousand officers on duty. On Friday morning, police officers from Bremen, Baden-Württemberg and Saxony could be seen on the streets around the venue.
Most and largest protests will take place on Saturday. A large demonstration is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the main train station. Participants will then march through the city to the Grugahalle.
The first peaceful protest with around 5,000 participants took place on Friday evening under the motto “Bass against Hate”.
