Cape Cod Martial Artist㊙️ Jim Brassard Earns Brand-New Recognition
[sPause sec=2 ePause]In HYANNIS Cape Cod- Veteran martial artist Jim Brassard likes references to famed physicist Albert Einstein.
“Albert Einstein said, 'It's not that I'm so great, it's just that I stay with it longer, ’” quoted Brassard who moved to Hyannisport in 1986 after growing up in Fitchburg.
Starting with martial arts lessons he got as a Christmas gift in 1975, Brassard has excelled with his 47-year award-winning commitment to martial arts as a student, teacher, grandmaster and now a business owner selling instructional and conditioning videos internationally.
A 10th Degree Black Belt, Brassard has earned countless recognitions, but said two of his most recent accolades have been humbling.
In August, he received the Presidential Sports Award for the Martial Arts signed by former president Barack Obama, but that led to an award never given previously.
Jim Thomas, who hosts the original USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame in New York City, wanted to honor this achievement by creating the Presidentially Awarded Martial Arts Grandmaster of the Year and grant it to Brassard during the HOF’s ceremony in March.
"I’m becoming an antique in martial arts, " said Brassard, who runs Shaolin American Kempo and teaches occasionally at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center. "Now they’re recognizing these things because of my videos and online commercials, and I’ve reached a larger audience. '"
Thomas said Brassard earned high recognition for his continued pursuit in the sport.
"He’s been a leader in his state, " Thomas said. "He’s constantly helping other schools and networking ideas through his books and DVDs. It’s placed him an elite category. "
Master Danny Lane, who has been personally trained by Chuck Norris for more than 37 years, also attended the ceremony.
Lane has even endorsed Brassard, saying he is "The Einstein of our time in the martial arts in teaching speed and striking execution. "
Brassard said now the only awards remaining are for 50 and 60 years in the sport, something Brassard said you don't really earn, you just live long enough.
"After the president signs a piece of paper that says you’re good at martial arts, there's not much more to accomplish " he said.
Brassard's mother, Jeanette, died this past Presidents Day on Feb. 20 after a struggle with illness, but after she died, there was a surprise for Brassard.
"My father was the head of the household, and he signed everything, " Brassard said "After my mother died, I found the registration sheet for the martial arts lessons, and it was her signature. She launched me into where I’m at today. ”
