If I may, I would also recommend the Analogue Productions pressing of the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album. It has been remastered in true stereo and sounds absolutely phenominal. The best I've ever heard it!
That analog productions reissue of Jethro Tull stand up sounds incredible I do enjoy my original copy as well but there are jaw dropping moments on the analog productions pressing Recently discovered your channel I really enjoy hearing your perspective cheers
You are right about vinyl appearance not necessarily reflecting sound quality and surface noise. Generally it does, a marked record is likely to sound worse than an unmarked one but not always. I have a first stereo pressing of Jethro Tull's "This Was" from 1968 which has clearly been very well played, the sleeve is falling apart, etc. However, it plays superbly with minimal surface noise and no obvious distortion. I put a lot of this down to the quality of the original vinyl, heavy and deep grooves. Conversely, the other day I was playing a copy of a Chris Rea album that looked barely marked and it sounded terrible, it even skipped in one place. It's a bit of a lottery. However, one final comment about surface noise. You mention "clicks" and "pops" a lot and getting clean copies. That's absolutely fine but my attitude at 65 years of age on this has changed dramatically. We now have digital which is completely devoid of background noise and can sound pretty good. I'm therefore fine with a bit of surface noise on my records which I feel adds to the character and I can filter out when listening just like one would filter static out on an old radio. What I can't tolerate though is distortion so a record that has been played on poor equipment and has IGD is a non starter for me.
My This Was mono is full of hairlines, scuffs and whatnot. HOwever, it sounds near mint. Vinyl was much better back then. Yes, I can tolerate and filter out clicks and pops but IGD is a different beast altogether. I basically agree with you. Thanks for your input
I Like the way you explain with passion the pros and cons of vinyl. I dare to ask you if a vinyl that contains a digital master can outperform the digital download or cd and why. Thank you for your job from Spain
As a rule of thumb, and all things being equal, vinyl will outperform digital downloads or cds beacuse there is less compression used. As for me, if it was digitally sourced I would get the cd. But that's me
Hello, regarding the Dire Straits "Love Over Gold" album, you are talking about the "Because sound Matters Series" remastered by Bernie or Bellman?. Cause i listended to it and sounds really really good for me. Thanks.
It's the Bernie Grundman's from 2009, because sound matters but the mastering has been on constant rereissue since then. They are incredibly sounding to me and beat the originals in some respects.
The 2014 white album, was that the mono or stereo you showed? I have the mono one but I still prefer the stereo, I have a Mofi stereo from the early eighties. It sounds real good.
The 2014 is mono. That's my go-to for regular playing. Not very keen on the stereo, but my favourite copy is the 1978 Dutch pressing. Very smooth with nice bass and addictive. Never heard the MOfi so I can't compare
I have a copy of Tom Waits Foreign Affairs that looks mint. It is absolutely blemish free, I could sell it as Mint tomorrow without trouble. The trouble is - is plays TERRIBLY. I mean it's like you're hearing it through a sand storm. I never have worked out what was done to it, but looks are indeed deceptive!
It's possible it is a bad pressing but also it may have been badly cleaned at some stage. Any use of a cloth with a cleaning solution can force dirt deep into the grooves making the record sound terrible although it looks great. Used records really need to be cleaned using a proper record cleaning machine, vacuum or ultrasonic.
As my analog gear got better I searched for better pressings of my favourite albums which led me to Speakers Corner and MoFi. This was early enough that both company offerings were below $35.00 CDN. As time went on a lot of my MoFi offerings were replaced by Japanese and German NM OG copies as I learned about tape degradation and mastering choices. My MoFi Alan Parsons Tales Of and Todd Rundgren Something/Anything have stayed at home in my collection as thy are excellent. The DSD issue does not bother me if the product is exemplary. I've tried reissues from the major labels and find them to be left wanting in QC and SQ. I have some Rhino, Craft and Acoustic Sounds reissues but they tend to be marginal improvements over NM OG copies. So in the end, I treasure my Speakers Corner Nilsson, Dire Straits, Supertramp, Lou Reed, Doobie Brothers, Carly Simon and Janos Starker LPs. Speakers Corner has been more consistent than any other label. Discogs NM grading based on sight instead of sound has forced me to abandon them. I told one vendor that to visually grade a record is as pointless as it would be to visually grade a car. If a record does not play properly it is as useless as a car that doesn't move even though they look NM. Please continue with your analysis as I can't experience everything, especially product produced in the EU.
Is there any point in buying a new edition of a album if you have the original good sounding, good condition album.....????? And Thanks for the interesting videos, and opinions!! Reg;Jan from Finland

Love all the Steven Wilson’s Jethro Tull pressings. The only one I was not too happy was “Thick as a brick” the original sounds way better on my opinion.
At this point, 4, though I upgrade every now and then. A PT600 1975 Telefunken, a Project debut, an Audiotechnica at120x and a Technics sl-1200. As for cartridges: Shure M-75 series 2, a Nagaoka MP110, a Sumiko Moonstone and an ortofon blue. HOpe that satisfies your curiosity
@@obre9523 Thanks! - Soon I am looking to purchase the Technics SL 1300G which s due out in October. I currently have a ProJect Debut Carbon Evo with an Ortophon 2M red and a blue. Plus a 1970 Phillips 202 Electronic, with matching Phillips 591amp. Part of Phillips 'Hifi International' Range.
Hi. 3 pieces of advice from a sound tech. (if possible) Roll the mic wire in the stand arm. Lower the mic a little bit, because It's almost in front of your mouth. Get a directional microphone or a better one. Impossible as it seems, it looks like the audio is being captured by the camera. Your content is interesting, but the experience of listen in such a low quality, harms the experience. Good luck!
Thank you sooo much! The sound is driving me nuts. I've tried three different mikes so far. I think the room's partially responsible. I'll follow your advice on my next video but if there's a cam+mic at an affordable price that you can recommend, I'd be delighted. Thanks for your input
Love your topics, but I have trouble understanding you, little bit. I struggle to understand you. Maybe the mic or accent. Sounds like you're in a bathroom. There is some echo. I want to hear a clear you.
Yes, the sound is drivng me nuts. I've tried 3 microphones so far but I think it has to do with the room. I need better isolation. I'll try to sort it out to the best of my knowledge or buying different gear. Need to save some cash, though. As for the accent, I try to tame my own and speak standard Uk Rp
Another very very good post, much enjoyable and useful, a pleasure to listen to. I'll keep on following you.

How many turntables do you have and what brand model are they? - Do you play everything across all TTs or old records on one turntable only?

Why are you not telling the prices instead of just saying expensive or pricey. It may be pricey to you but not for others.
Good point. It's just sometimes that I don't remember cos it was long ago. But I will if I do
Just a suggestion. Work on the sound in your video. You sound like you are in an echo chamber.

I have no problem with accent but the bleaching out of the screen with high contrast was hard for my eyes . .
