Brian and Paul have both written songs that make me cry. Curiously, both have written songs that make me smile.
The entire Pet Sounds album is hautingly beautiful. A masterpiece.
It didn`t sale very well, maybe it`s an acquired taste.
Meh! It may be sophisticated musically but it's naive lyrically and it's still got the school boys at the surf beach vibe. While the Beatles were growing up the Beach Boys were fading away.
@@garygagnon5057 People say that Pet Sounds inspired McCartney when The Beatles wrote Sgt Pepper. I think he listened to it and thought. "we can do much better than that".
@@CB-xr1eg That maybe true, however the 3 other Beatles didn`t really like doing Pepper, John like a song or 2 on Pepper but, wanted to get back to his style of Music, George was hardly there and Ringo wanted to go back to being a Band. .... this was from interviews each one made. To this day, I will hum some songs from Pepper, but I haven`t hum any from Pet.... I`m not knocking Pet, but nor do I find it a masterpiece.
I just wasn’t made for these times is so real and heartfelt. Stunning album.
Such classy, honorable praise from Sir Paul.
paul.. insufferably self centred

Ignore the troll . . .
@@user-eb8wc9cp1v He isn't a troll, jerk... he's just giving his opinion. One that I share. 'Paul McCartney' is one of the most big-headed people in music 🤡
The Beatles took note when Pet Sounds came out, just as Brian did when Rubber Soul came out. Perhaps the only thing better than the legacy these two have created is the praise that they've given each other. Legends!
Well said 👌🏼
Take note it was U.S. "rubber soul" which contains UK help tracks, and Brian Wilson said then i've just seen a face (from UK help ) was the best, now think about it again)
@beatlemaniacwaltdisneyfan4753 of course it was the US version of Rubber Soul. I can't imagine that Brian Wilson would have listened to any other version. Not really sure what that has to do with anything.
@@magneto7930 it has to do that this version includes help tracks
Rubber Soul is my favorite Beatles album. Not enough appreciation has been shown
Flame recognizes flame.
2 great bands and 2 geniuses
Bono😂
Actually 3
Bands and musicians like the Beach Boys come along once in a lifetime.
You know, that's a real interesting point. I'm not even sure how I'd define 'a band like the Beach Boys'. I mean, they defined an entire genre of American rock for the 60s - The Beatles, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin... I suppose Nirvana for younger folk. There really just aren't many performers who can do that.
The Beach Boys sang on the Pet Sounds album. They didn't play on it. The "wrecking crew " did.@@jackwells8107
One that makes me cry the most is the long and winding road on McCartney's own album
Oh yes
Same
Brian Wilsons favorite Beatle track and one of his all time favorites
Love that one so much
Brian Wilson is a true American treasure and a musical genius.
Too bad Brian let the both the accolades and the pressure get to his head... the pressure to follow up Pet Sounds with something on a whole new level ultimately drove him crazy. Good Vibrations was a taste of the new record that would never actually be released, despite intense and widespread anticipation.
Perfectionism has its perks, but can absolutely ruin a person who chases it to excess. Drugs don't help either, kids... learn from the mistakes of others.
Lol you Americans just sound so cheesy and ridiculous when you call somebody an "American hero"...
Even in England we don't treat the Beatles like English heroes.
No, they were just four lads from Liverpool with dream.
@@platypus4657Please. Lorde wrote an album at 16 and won a Grammy for it at 17 beating out Beyonce and GaGa.
Niw that's genius
@@michaelcoletta4547thats not how schizophrenia works
@@michaelcoletta4547 Are you not aware that the album Smile does exist? Brian did complete it and release it, dude, it eventually came out a few years ago. Also, Brian had mental health issues far beyond what you're describing. Educate yourself.
It's nice to know that there is someone who truly impressed *Sir Paul♪♫♪*
This comment made me tear up
I think he means this one sincerely. But this is the same guy who referred to Kanye (or Ye) as a "genius". He rarely says anything bad about anyone.
@@TheBent139 I know exactly what you mean... He does have the habit of doing that...
Its nice to know thats theres a song where McCartney did not write part of it :)
@@user-iv1ed9mj5i No, but Tony Asher did. As he co-wrote this and I believe 6-7 other songs on Pet Sounds.
Pet Sounds and Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band are the two most significant albums in pop music history.
Both were totally innovative at around the same time.
At least all the members of the Beatles actually played on their record…
@@Tony8418sure, but The Beach Boys also Didnt have a George Martin guiding them, they had Brian
Two great bands. Two great albums!
@@WhisperinWinds67 Brian guiding the wrecking crew and Martin guiding the Beatles. A fair comparison. Just think it’s odd to classify them in the same category as “bands” when most of the instruments were played by others. The drummer only played on 1 track. The actual beach boys members mostly only sang. The wrecking crew played their instruments for them.
McCartney has spent his career praising others. A true gent.
Many years ago ,i was able to meet The Beach Boys in Orange County California when they the band was first formed ,my BFF was in a wheelchair,I pushed her about four miles so we could meet them ,they autographed her arm and gave her an album,I will never forget that experience.
Aww, that was so nice of you; I’m glad your long trek paid off and that you actually met them in person... ❤
Seeing Bono on preview got me scared. I’m glad it turned out differently
When you get into the technical aspects of Brian Wilson's composition and recording techniques, you quickly start to realize that you're dealing with a different level of artistry. He would have instruments playing in different keys and different time signatures, all flowing together seamlessly into the same piece of music. The guy is a full-on savant.
In My Room and Wouldn't It Be Nice are also favorites
I adore “Wouldn’t it be Nice”
@@Eidann63 Yes, wonderful song indeed
Yes it’s great but I think good vibrations was a more surprising songs with variations and tempo shifts. We are so lucky to have had Beach Boys and Beatles.
Brian Wilson was a genius songwriter and arranger. He also inspired McCartney and Lennon to even greater musical heights. Not bad.
And to think the equally incredible Caroline No was on the same record. Lighting struck twice!
Agree
And Wouldn't it Be Nice too, all three songs written by Brian wilson and Tony Asher.
I still love Paul, love Brian Wilson. They don't write music, they ARE music. Thanks for posting.
Well, actually they do write music
For me it’s “Here, There and Everywhere”.
PEACE AND LOVE ALWAYS TO THE BEACH BOYS AND PAUL MCCARTNEY
I was lucky enough to see them in the early 90s when Carl was still in the group. Unless there is a Wilson in the group they are basically just a tribute band. He sang God Only Knows at the concert.
Pet Sounds is amazing!
Brian is a visionary
Still an amateur compared to Paul.
@andrewboyd6517 Lol no.
And it's THAN not then.
Learn to spell.
@andrewboyd6517 No he's not.
Nobody has written more hits THAN Lennon and McCartney.
Like you said Lennon/McCartney 😉 Brian did it on his own!
I addition the arrangements and vocals of The Beach Boys are much more demanding than those of the Beatles. Having hits is not a guarantee of being the best 😉

This video short was beautifully done on a beautiful song.
Imagine what Paul‘s head would’ve done if he would’ve stood there, singing it with Carl.
Long live, Brian Wilson ! ❤
I totally agree with Paul. My favorite too.
"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes".
Agreed. Doesn’t have the harmonies, but the chord structure and key changes are otherworldly. My dad used to play it on piano and it was the first song that I really loved.
One could certainly place Brian Wilson in the pantheon of classic American songwriters like the great Jerome Kern who composed Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, The Way You Look Tonight etc
Can't argue with this statement! Brian Wilson was a prolific genius! ❤❤
I agree. Simply my favorite Beach Boys song.
That's my favorite Beach Boys song ever...Perfect.
God only knows is one of the best songs ever. It takes me back to a beautiful, innocent time.
Don't get it. It's kinda lame

It's a song that isn't dated, Never hearing it before, you would never know when it was written and recorded.
What a thing to have for an epitaph: 'My song was so beautiful it brought Paul McCartney to tears.'
Sir Paul thinks of his beloved Linda when he hears this song.
They should have considered writing together
Absolutely
Love it too
*I'm 46 and I fully remember this song coming from my older sisiers, room. Can't really explain the "why" I love one of the simplistic, most beautiful songs...ever. I know, It's corny af, believe me...I KNOW. 😬 BUT, I had some pretty amazing dances with my hubby over our 20 yrs together and, maybe we even had a few, gentle and brief quiet conversations. My husband passed a couple years ago. Shouldn't have happened. It was a total shock. We had a whole lifetime together. Met when I was 13 and got married on Christmas Eve, when I was 26. I can't not think of him when I hear this song! I just don't know if my tears are more happy tears, as I think of the memories...OR, if it's just sad tears of my lost love. I hope to see you one day again baby. I Love you with everything I am and more. "God only knows what I'd do without you."* ❤
Paul's humility is one of the traits that makes him such a legend
John and perhaps George didn't think Paul was too humble. John wrote the line " I've seen religion from Jesus to Paul".
@@phillipanderson7398 I was referring to him now. Humility grows with wisdom. That's why it's uncommon to see it in youngsters
If Paul and Barry agree, it should be true (the first and third most successful songwriters in history).
My friend had a unhealthy affection for The Beach Boys song Sloop John B. I say that because I’ve probably heard him singing it drunk over 100 times. He’s also a good songwriter
❤❤❤❤🎉 Wilson was a Genius
Still is
I heard this song live by Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, beutiful❤❤❤
How beautiful, generous, genuine and lovely❤. What an uplifting little short video. Thank you. Yes, the song is a gift!! 🙏
That’s Brian’s brother the late great Carl Wilson sing the lead vocals ~ The voice of the angels ~
Yes, the song is beautiful and it reaches everyone who has experienced true love. Of course the minor key works wonder on the emotions.
Minor key always tugs at the heartstrings..💯👍💝🤗
It’s not in a minor key though?
Well, the song George Harrison wrote , to me is my favorite. “Something “. Simply beautiful.
Brian Wilson is a musical genius.
The Beatles were a million times better
One of my favorites too!
My daughter and SIL danced to this at their wedding and I have a feeling that so did many other couples ❤❤❤
I love that song. Beautiful
Paul McCartney and others like other songs by Brian sung by Carl surely. And so should you ❤
I love this song as a man that sings in a thrash metal band I grew up loving the Beach Boys
Nothing wrong with that. Variety is the spice of life.
Though not as big of a global following nor revered as much as other famous bands, I always thought it intriguing how many famous musicians and bands of the 80's said Roxy Music was their favorite band. They had some great songs. But for them to be so loved by other more famous musicians of the time was always interesting. Fascinating to hear what great musicians consider great.
Love that song
"God Only Knows", was featured in the movie, "Love Actually".
Boogie Nights as well

Have you viewed his Film “ Truly, Madly, Deeply “ ? It’s so sensitive and so much more complex than anything Alan Rickman has performed in. 🥲
Too bad Carl wasn’t there to sing it with Paul. His voice was equal to Brian’s arrangement. Paul and John have some songs equivalent. In My Life by John and Yesterday by Paul are amazing too. God Only Knows…all I can say is a true gift to humanity.
So many good ones. How about Here There and Everywhere
Carl Wilson sang it. The best voice in the band. And they were all competent singers. Just great
It was double tracked with Brian and Carl
@@scottmatznick3140 not really. Brian does in fact sing the backing vocals along with Bruce, but the lead vocals are fully Carl’s voice
Yes, that is an amazing song. So many talented musicians revere this song, that it speaks volumes about how great it is.
There is no doubt that this song makes everyone feel music in a deeply matter
Paul and Brian were born two days apart.
They may have been conceived at precisely the same moment 😮.
And Elvis Costello's version of God Only Knows is also a masterpiece.
I've never heard it. I must Google it. Was it live or done in the studio ?
God Only Knows is truly a special thing. Glad one of the greats sees that. I couldn’t agree more with Paul on his assessment of the song.
Wide eyed from heart n soul ! 🌈💖
It brings tears to my eyes too. The song is a gift to all!
Classic rock is genius. How do those writers and musicians create masterpieces?
I love both of those singers/groups. This was my favourite Beach Boys song, because it talks about my God,etc.
Bono… such a wise man…
Brain Wilson 🧠👁️ ❤
I love that song.
Yep, it's up there all right.
Beach Boys was Great Band, Brian Wilson definitely one of the Best song writers in history..absolutely amazing!
Long history of mutual respect there.

I've always loved it.
Here Here! 1 of the Greatness Song 🎼 🎶 Ever Composed!
The Fabs have used that bass line in Strawberry Feilds and Penny Lane. God Only Knows is a true masterpiece of biblical proportions.
If only his two brothers survived, "God Only Knows" what he might have written.😢
It is a beautiful song!!
Wow. I never thought he'd say that song.
Mad Men has a scene with that song and it's beautiful.
I think that's one of the most influential songs on modern music that exists.
Preach on Paul.
I'm going to mention a name, that I haven't seen here, or in the video, and without this singer, this song wouldn't be as good,
Carl Dean Wilson!

Loved all Wilson's writings Play Caroline No regularly 😊
2 pop masters born 2 days apart in 1942.
Pet Sounds is regarded as "the" best rock album of all time, not "one" of the best. The album changed the entire industry.
Regarded by whom? Plenty of people would disagree with that sentiment.
The sloop John B.'s the one that gets me
Keith moon idolized brian wilson and the beach boys.he wanted to be the drummer for the beach boys should they have asked or needed him!
Yes, Keith loved The Beach Boys. He did a rendition of Barbara Ann that was really fun. But I am a huge Moon fan!
Music is the language of the soul 🎶👍
Loved it and Always will ❤
You do realise it’s Carl who sings ‘God Only Knows’, right?
The Beach Boys never won a Grammy. Not one, not even for Good Vibrations. There is no justice.
Really?!!! That’s shameful, especially when you consider some of the numbskulls who have won.
The song moves me when I hear it. The Beach Boys were always trying to break the musical mold anyone put them in.
I AGREE!!!
IMHO, God Only Knows is up in the musical pantheon with Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. It's definitely beyond "pop" music.
Had to go listen 😊
I agree!
I'll put it up against "The Weight" from The Last Waltz and "Shine a Light" and "A Day in the Life."
I think those songs are actually better. Imho. My favorite from them is, Wouldn't it be Nice and Good Vibrations. But, I still really dig God Only Knows.
