- Paris and Amber Strother are Minneapolis-born twins who create sonic textures and dreamy synth-driven R&B from their shared vocabulary as friends, sisters, and Minnesota natives under the moniker We Are KING. They hold the ground-breaking distinction of being the first independent artists to earn a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album for their eponymous debut in 2016.
We spoke with We Are KING about their collaboration with Moog to design patches for the Moog One, vintage drum machines (including their favorite Roland CR-78), their work with Prince, and what keeps them inspired to keep creating.

I can listen to Amber riff all day, everyday & Paris' chords just swaddles you like a warm blanket 🥰 They understand the fundamentals; "music as time travel" (YES!) & the transcendental nature of it all (I swoon)
There are tons of very talented vocalists & musicians out there, but only a handful of them who's sound literally transport your spirit somewhere else anytime you hear them (Anita Baker, Sade, Stevie Wonder, Al Jarreau, Angela Bofill...just to name a few)
For We Are KING to have achieved that tier of artistry with just an EP, some featured tracks, & a debut album speaks volumes of their dedication to their craft & just being in tune with that innate gift you can't really teach; that IT factor. I'm always on pins & needles awaiting ANYTHING they put out. Pins & needles, ya hear? Love them! #DayOneFan

I love they notes and progressions they choose. They turn corners with sound that others don't. And their singing is angelic. Their understanding of sound gives their music a weird futuristic, but ancient soulful feel. Weird and wonderful and comforting music.

The first time I heard the KIng 3 song EP(in 2012), I don't think I've ever fallen in love ❤️ like that before, and I'm a music head who remembers the first time I heard Erykah, Jill, Musiq, Lina, Corrine Bailey Rae,Deborah Bond, Alex Isley and other favorites. But just those 3 brilliant melodic masterpieces changed my whole view of R&B /Soul and just how utterly creative and spontaneous artist could be if they took themselves out of the box. And I don't think I've EVER played anyone else's music as much I as I did King(We Are King) all day every day, from just those 3 songs, to the singles, to the collabs, and the full album. The part that I will miss the most(aside from Anitas velvet vocals) is the magical harmonizes that they brought us, it was what was missing in today's music. But I have a feeling they will brilliantly have that covered! Just watching this reminds me of just how genius they are and as much as I have missed them(and will miss Anita Bias) I'm hyped excited for what's about to come, I cannot wait for the new music and more collabs! ( A We Are King/Alex Isley collab would just push me off the cliff and send me floating lol!)
