Hey Cody! If you are reading this, there were some things you did wrong in the video. I work with activated carbon (AC) on a daily basis and I think you were trying to chemically activate the charcoal. First of all, chemical activation needs heat, at least 600ºC. Second, you should impregnate the charcoal with the reagents and then dry the mix for about 24h. After this step you use heat, with an inert atmosphere to prevent burning. All that is left to do is wash the AC with water until the pH is neutral. Although the quantities of activating agent seemed right you can try to change amounts used to find the optimum. Hope this helps.

I was thinking the same thing. I have no clue how well real activated charcoal would have performed. Without those numbers one could conclude that the lemon juice didn't get activated and the rest did.
Thanks, was about to use the lemon juice 'recipe' to activate charcoal myself and make a filter for my laser cutter and 3d printers. Gladly saw this video and changed my mind 😊
the reason why the lemon juice didn't work is because it contains citric oil so the charcoal absorbed it and won't let go of it. the charcoal became locked with the citric oil and would not allow any other liquid to be absorbed. citric oil is used in wood stains and wood cleaners and the oil is lock in it and creates a protection layer that help keep wood hydrated.

Great video and a good teaching lesson on kitchen chemistry. Using principles of chemistry, you can get good results using mason jars and sieves. One tip would be when you use the syringe, draw up 10 ml of liquid in the syringe and deliver 9 ml. This would avoid losing liquid at the end of the syringe travel. One more example of basic reality brought to the tubes by the mad wizard of Utah...
"Test it! That's the least you could do!" I love this. I got in what to most seems like a very petty argument with a youtuber recently in a comment section because he was giving opinions on hunting arrows and their effectiveness, but his stance was in complete contradiction to what testing shows. The people who put the info out include a couple guys who have post graduate STEM degrees and spent their whole careers studying ballistics. The tests can be replicated with just a scale and a $100 chronograph, and I tested it out and got very similar results. It drove me nuts though because people take his advice and if they do they are going to go out and try to take the life of an animal with a much less effective setup, and even though he knows this and tests stuff out on his channel all the time, he does not seem to have any interest in taking an hour and testing it for himself. Call me what you like but I think if you are going to go kill an animal, you owe it to the animal to do everything you can to be an effective, efficient killer and minimize its suffering. To have hunting be such a big part of your life and refusing to take an hour to find out if your thoughts on arrows are off base blows my mind. When I thought my setup might not have been as effective as possible, it was my obssession to gather quantifiable data and correct that.
I gave up being worried about people spreading b.s. The individual that takes bad advice is doomed if they don't realize that there's very little good advice available anywhere. I mean, how do you explain to someone that any moron can and probably will offer bad advice all over the internet? How is someone not aware of that? Even the "experts" often are inaccurate when it comes to various subjects. I feel like everyone should be issued a book when they are born, that explains how they can evaluate information. It's astounding how many people assume they are born with those skills. I understand where you're coming from. I just think the people offering bad advice are a symptom of the more fundamental problem. Peace.
i mean i think you're supposed to recharcoal the charcoal after mixing this stuff INTO IT and then BOOM WOOOWWW congratulations you have activated it and if you havent? what about literally using a dry cleaning machine, use Supercritical fluid maybe with... acid??? or something like ETCHING SOLUTION???? THINK. and then test these show which is best and which is VALUE. and which aren't.
10:26 moments like this make me comfortable in life because I know that even though people like Cody are incredibly intelligent, we are all human and sometimes even people like Cody say things like 'sawn'
I'm pretty sure that to activate carbon chemically, it also needs to be heated to 200-300 degrees Celsius. Can you try redoing the experiment while heating the carbon?
That's my understanding too. One paper I have read on chemical activation of hemp char used a 4.5:1 KOH:char ratio and cooked it at 800°C for 1.5hours after treatment to achieve a specific surface area of 2388m²/g
Was expecting this to be you turning lemon juice and household cleaners into charcoal and kept waiting for the reveal. Thanks for showing how easy it can be to test it.
Here's my recipe for activated charcoal: 1. Put some charcoal in a jar 2. Add equal parts lemon juice, soda water, and vodka until jar is full 3. Let sit for at LEAST 3 days 4. Turn jar upside down, while chanting by the light of a new moon 5. Dump all that out of the jar, and add activated charcoal Guaranteed activated charcoal.
I like when he whispers "your fine" to the charcoal after he puts it back into the jar. Cody makes me feel not as weird or at least not alone in my weirdness 😊 Now when my family/friends say "your weird" my response is "I know isn't it great" . . . Thank you Cody
Cody, great video! The only criticism I have is there is no control. I would've liked to see a commercial/ store bought product to compare the iodine test against. As someone who has little knowledge on activated charcoal, I had no idea what I good number for iodine absorption should be. Other than that, another great video. Keep up the good work
This is also Why we need to be able to talk about such subjects. Some may get it wrong, but we need to be able to to learn to think scientifically and be able to get to the correct answer ourselves.. or at least watch someone that is respected that understands how to get to the solution to issues at hand. Soon enough you would think that for the most part the wheat from the chaff (good from bad) sorts themselves out. ...still odd that the idiots seem to attract idiots despite all evidence at hand, social media seems to amplify and divide -.-" Well, keep up the good work, most of us here love to learn at any rate :)
At the end, I felt like I was in trouble and Cody my dad was extremely disappointed with me because I messed up with some dangerous chemicals, he was trying to desperately steer me in the right direction so I wouldn't die, at least that's how I felt. Thanks, Cody I loved the feeling man... :D

Heating something is expensive, generating steam is even more expensive. If there was a less expensive way of making activated charcoal, you can bet that it would be used commercially of course. Thanks for busting some internet myths Cody. Also, you have my respect for promoting interest in real science. Best regards from Chris UK.
Is there an already established electrolytic method for activating charcoal of a generally useful grain size? It seems like with the right setup, possibly using a carbon cathode and an anode made with charcoal grains conglomerated with an inert binder that can be easily dissolved out after electrolysis combined with the right electrolyte and voltage, it should be possible.
@@mytech6779 Tbh, idk lol. That was just a top of the head idea with no further consideration put into it; the grain/binder anode probably wouldn't work out now that I think about it a bit more because of more than a few different reasons. Maybe cycle through appropriately sized anodes after a certain elapsed period producing the proper micro porosity and which are then crushed to the desired grain size? Idk, was just a random thought that crossed through my mind so it might not be possible in any configurationn, at least with any worthwhile efficiency or effectiveness.
@@dustinsmith8341 You're likely correct in your assessment; although if a means is possible I can think of a few different scenarios in which it could be a more attractive method of production in certain circumstances.
The closest thing I could think of is electrochemical exfoliation which is actually used to produce few layer graphene after sintering or partially oxidized carbon nanoparticles/nanoplatelets or whatever depending on your source material. This is a proposed „green“ synthesis of mass producing graphene rather than with cvd or hummer‘s method. Though activating charcoal with the chemicals cody covered above is generally fine though the impregnated carbon has to be heated with say the KOH to ~600-1000C to activate it
Thank you for your time and effort’s to teach me that which I have wondered about. You saved me from making mistakes and your right we owe it to ourselves to do our own testing. Have a great day.
Thanks for this! I had come across some of those "hacks" before and you're right about it being potentially dangerous. I spent some time working in a country where a lot of people don't have access to safe drinking water. Although there are a lot of experts and NGOs working on this, I was curious if there could be a cheap local solution. I tried solar stills with solar tubes and home-made activated charcoal. The solar tubes should technically be able to boil water but I didn't have any success either boiling water to treat it or distilling-- too slow. Then I got really excited when I saw people making activated charcoal at home and thought that maybe if I found an easy process, people could start making it for their own communities. Obviously, had I gotten even close to something viable on my own, I would have had an expert test the efficacy before suggesting anyone use it, but it's still a shame because based on some ideas I found online, I got some people excited for a cheap/easy solution that didn't pan out.

You didn't show us how a gram of real activated charcoal would perform!
I was thinking the same thing. I have no clue how well real activated charcoal would have performed. Without those numbers one could conclude that the lemon juice didn't get activated and the rest did.
I think he showed it in his old activated charcoal vid
Actually I have.
It would have absorbed much more iodine
@@Sqwince23 he specifically mentions the water as beeing an inert control
Thanks, was about to use the lemon juice 'recipe' to activate charcoal myself and make a filter for my laser cutter and 3d printers. Gladly saw this video and changed my mind 😊
0:51 On account of his hair, Cody has officially turned into a mad scientist
agree 100% with your conclusions!! awesome to see you back and your videos again!!
"So if you see a video like this, test it!"
Here I go Nile Red, I knew you lied about that cyanide being poisonous!...
Funny you say that, Cody has a video where he drinks cyanide
Too few people in the world put integrity first, glad you strive for that in every one of your videos, never change that!
11:00 this is the first time i've heard Cody irritated on cam.
And rightfully so. Getting angry about people being dangerously irresponsible is a good reason to me.
Enjoyable and important experiment Cody. Thanks Sir, you are the bomb!
sees "actually making activated carbon" link: I see where this is going
the reason why the lemon juice didn't work is because it contains citric oil so the charcoal absorbed it and won't let go of it.
the charcoal became locked with the citric oil and would not allow any other liquid to be absorbed.
citric oil is used in wood stains and wood cleaners and the oil is lock in it and creates a protection layer that help keep wood hydrated.
One day Cody is gonna make gold from lead.
And Im here to watch it.
He made a golden bullet, that's sorta similar.
Yeah not really a thing unless you have a particle accelerator.
He'll need a philosopher's stone first
I love that you keep your fck ups in the videos, makes them feel more genuine.
Just finished the vid, gotta say I appreciate your frustration with fake potentially dangerous videos and information on the internet. It is absolutely appalling what people will do for clicks.
Can you do a Lord Kelvins Generator with Mercury? Would love to see it!
No
Or, how about, no?.
I think that could be interesting but I'm not sure it would actually generate any more charge than water
@@bcikablam3578 Or any charge separation at all actually due to the high electric conductivity as it’s very hard to get a significant charge separation in the mercury
@@GreenCaulerpaI'm pretty sure better electric conductivity means better charge separation. Adding salt to the Kelvins Generator makes it better!
5:35 bronze mushroom casually lying around
10:26 moments like this make me comfortable in life because I know that even though people like Cody are incredibly intelligent, we are all human and sometimes even people like Cody say things like 'sawn'
Thinking the floating charcoal (due to lower density) was the bit that was activated. Should try again with muriatic and nitric acid as competitors.
That clock is tripping me out
Here's my recipe for activated charcoal:
1. Put some charcoal in a jar
2. Add equal parts lemon juice, soda water, and vodka until jar is full
3. Let sit for at LEAST 3 days
4. Turn jar upside down, while chanting by the light of a new moon
5. Dump all that out of the jar, and add activated charcoal
Guaranteed activated charcoal.
Wait, superheated steam isn't a household chemical?
Not if you're cooking right.
@@crackedemerald4930 Depends on what you're cooking
Cody you definetly seem more happy and enthusiastic in your recent videos. I may be wrong but it looks like you're back in the swing of things.
Cody Slab , We need a chicken hole base update!
Cody "slab" xd
@@entityunknown2 When you wanna build a lab, you start with a slab.
It's nice to see someone who does such a great job of sticking to the scientific method and controlled testing methods!
I like when he whispers "your fine" to the charcoal after he puts it back into the jar. Cody makes me feel not as weird or at least not alone in my weirdness 😊 Now when my family/friends say "your weird" my response is "I know isn't it great" . . . Thank you Cody
@3.17... too funny, much clever. I replayed that way too many times.
I like the intro with the charcoil , you should keep that one
Cody, great video! The only criticism I have is there is no control. I would've liked to see a commercial/ store bought product to compare the iodine test against. As someone who has little knowledge on activated charcoal, I had no idea what I good number for iodine absorption should be.
Other than that, another great video. Keep up the good work
4:38 "hopefully we'll end up with just the charcoal" thats true for all the methods :P
This is also Why we need to be able to talk about such subjects. Some may get it wrong, but we need to be able to to learn to think scientifically and be able to get to the correct answer ourselves.. or at least watch someone that is respected that understands how to get to the solution to issues at hand.
Soon enough you would think that for the most part the wheat from the chaff (good from bad) sorts themselves out.
...still odd that the idiots seem to attract idiots despite all evidence at hand, social media seems to amplify and divide -.-"
Well, keep up the good work, most of us here love to learn at any rate :)
Hey you should Kalab with ghost town living!!!
At the end, I felt like I was in trouble and Cody my dad was extremely disappointed with me because I messed up with some dangerous chemicals, he was trying to desperately steer me in the right direction so I wouldn't die, at least that's how I felt. Thanks, Cody I loved the feeling man... :D
at least we've found a way to de-activate charcoal
Looking good Cody. Surprised you managed not to curse when you spilt that water. Too wholesome.
you had drawn CODY SLAB - on a slab of concrete... who is going to clean that up?
He probably had permission to doodle on that particular slab.
@@dennyhhhh That was a Cody slab, he's permitted to write on these
Congratulations on the almost 2 mil subs ! Always happy to see you.
OH YES, HERE WE GOOOO!
cody videos are a treat in and of themselves - extra bonus points for charocal stuff! good to see you again cody!
EDIT
bummer.. it really would have been too good to be true :/
thanks for clearing things up!
Support him on Patreon and you’ll have lots of Cody content :)
Heating something is expensive, generating steam is even more expensive. If there was a less expensive way of making activated charcoal, you can bet that it would be used commercially of course. Thanks for busting some internet myths Cody. Also, you have my respect for promoting interest in real science. Best regards from Chris UK.
probably something to do with supercritical etching solution 》
Is there an already established electrolytic method for activating charcoal of a generally useful grain size? It seems like with the right setup, possibly using a carbon cathode and an anode made with charcoal grains conglomerated with an inert binder that can be easily dissolved out after electrolysis combined with the right electrolyte and voltage, it should be possible.
Dissolved out by what? The water in the electrolyte or non-polar solvents that are adsorbed by the charcoal?
@@mytech6779 Tbh, idk lol. That was just a top of the head idea with no further consideration put into it; the grain/binder anode probably wouldn't work out now that I think about it a bit more because of more than a few different reasons. Maybe cycle through appropriately sized anodes after a certain elapsed period producing the proper micro porosity and which are then crushed to the desired grain size? Idk, was just a random thought that crossed through my mind so it might not be possible in any configurationn, at least with any worthwhile efficiency or effectiveness.
Youre better off using physical/chemical methods to etch away at the inside of the charcoal. Freeze/thaw cycles might even be useful.
Though activating charcoal with the chemicals cody covered above is generally fine though the impregnated carbon has to be heated with say the KOH to ~600-1000C to activate it
I loved the rant at the end! Hell yeah, agree 100%! Any form of dishonesty is immoral but to also make revenue is just plain evil greed.
So dirty and unprofessional and yet still light years better than the other videos on the topic.
I love cody's depiction of Pyrolysis as "partial burning." It's not wrong on a fundamental level, just amusingly oversimplified. : )
Thank you for your time and effort’s to teach me that which I have wondered about. You saved me from making mistakes and your right we owe it to ourselves to do our own testing.
Have a great day.
The genuine anger at the end. I'm so glad you care about it!
Cody I’ve been regularly watching your videos since late 2015 and I gotta say keep it up and stay motivated. A lot of people are like me and like you and your content. (p.s I miss the explosive videos although I know RUclips doesn’t like them one of the first videos I ever watched was you opening a lock with nitroglycerin and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.)
