    Surprisingly on pc with that new frame gen mod that lets nvidia 1xxx and 2xxx cards use amd frame gen in place of nvidia's 3xxx frame gen standard, I actually dont notice any lag with it. I hope the input lag will be improved here.

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  8 месяцев назад +2

      Nice! I hope it improves as well. I didn't think we'd even see frame generation due to the lack of power on the 7840U. So I'm happy we're seeing it and hope they can improve it. I'd imagine it's just a lack of extra performance that's the main issue.

      @@filt3rless Very interesting! The steps I followed that worked for me were posted on reddit, looks like I'm not able to drop the link in this comment? It was posted by u/HailstormTTV, "175hz display overclock settings"

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  8 месяцев назад +1

      @@DeVries6276 I think RUclips has blocked links in comments permanently. I did find the post by searching it though.
      Maybe something has changed since I last tested it. What I originally tested was people knocking the refresh rate down to 30Hz to try and get a "smoother" FreeSync experience. Since LFC on the Ally doubles the Hz after you go below 48FPS, so 40FPS = 80Hz people were trying to change it to where the display would go lower than 48Hz.
      I found you could set it to 1Hz and even cap the FPS to 10 with no black screen. On my FreeSync monitor I could only get to 40Hz and on my FreeSync laptop I could only get to 45Hz before black screening.
      My conclusion was people were experience placebo (which I thought I saw something too at first). Or the Ally is shipping with different hardware related to the screen in some units. Kind of like the Steam Deck OLED where some have the BOE and others have the Samsung panel.

      I found when using the built in Asus monitor it actually messes with the frame generation. The AMD one shows N/A, so I'm using Riva and MSI Afterburner which seem to be accurate. From what I can tell it's definitely doubling (or very close to doubling) the frame rate.

  • @WillySou

    Thanks for sharing your findings! Good stuff 👍 I would definitely not play with a mouse with FG turned on. With a controller the lag it's definitely less noticeable. I know it's widely unpopular among gamers but I use sometimes FG from my LG tv and I enjoy for some games more story focused. But even there I could not use a mouse due to the latency. The "Ally on hands" (not sure that's what's called) channel also had some interesting finds about FG. He was saying on cyberpunk in Dogtown was much smoother with it activated. Without it was barely hitting 30 and was jittery and with FG turned on was much better.

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hey thanks for stopping by! :)
      That is interesting findings on a game running near 30FPS to be better with FG. FG would actually lower the FPS down even more and anything near 30 I found to be a pretty terrible experience.
      I am planning on testing a few games in "normal" situations where I'm just playing it to see. I might even make a video doing like 10+ games with side by side comparisons.

      As far as I have read around this is a feature which is compatible with all games, all you need is just a compatible gpu and this is the main difference with Fsr and DLSS where you need not only a compatible gpu but also games which come with the possibility to use fsr and dlss. So AFMF should represent a big change.

      1: the cost is 350$ to 450$
      2: it’s extremely difficult and needs specialized equipment and you can’t just use a soldering iron. You need a total reflow station, board heater, alligator clip for bios chip or a bios chip socket and ribbon cable to a flasher, plus lots and lots of skill. It’s not a simple diy job for anyone. I myself have all of the equipment and refuse to risk ruining my board for it. Maybe if. I had 350$ to spare to pay Swanson or any of the very few but fine people doing it and I could send my Device away for 4 months …. SURE
      I also would love to see ram user upgradeable but I do understand the many reasons it’s not. Both cost and speed.

      Hey, I didn't see Anti-Lag+ in the control panel. I'm not sure it's been implemented for iGPU's yet. And it's something that has to be implemented at the game level, like FSR3.
      I tried the Lossless Scaling app, but it seems it doesn't support exclusive full screen which is really limiting. However, locking the FPS to 30 definitely worked better in that then in AFMF.

      I think it's still worth trying when it officially comes out on the Ally. As Audie said below this is blown up and zoomed in on the Ally screen so it's easier to see the flaws. However it's not the artifacting that ruins it for me, it's the input lag. It feels a bit more sluggish then turning V-Sync on, on a 60Hz monitor.

    Slowing the footage to inspect artifacts seems like a waste of time. If you arent able to see it in real time who cares? Rather focus on the atrifacts that persist even in normal speed. If you inspect the frames generated by nvidia it looks like hot garbage... thats not the point of this technology

    • @filt3rless

      To me the artifacting is very noticeable while playing as well as the increased input lag. However, some people didn't see the difference between VRR and non-VRR when they bought a Legion GO. To me the difference is huge when I owned both. I've tried to show family light bleed on a screen and they couldn't see it. Unluckily for me I see just about everything, although that helps with a tech channel I guess haha.

    According to AMD, FMF turns off automatically during fast camera motion, like sitting in place spinning the camera like this, if it detects too much difference between the frames being interpolated. This is probably why it looks "smoother" during the slower camera pans, but gets super jerky and stuttery when you spin around too quickly.

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  8 месяцев назад +9

      Hey, yeah I was going to include that section in here. In Skyrim while testing 45FPS at a really high speed I noticed it kicking off. Then also tested Cyberpunk and it kicked off when panning really fast. It didn't kick off in any of the tests I'm showing here though. I'd imagine with FPS games though, especially competitive, it'd kick off a bunch on the Ally with the lower base frame rates.

    am I missing something? why the heck FG produces less FPS? and this is not the first video I noticed this I understand when you do fast movements FG will do nothing but on "steady" scene why is behaving like that? didn't get it

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  6 месяцев назад

      When FG is turned on, it's using resources. So the base frame rate drops (because of the overhead FG requires). However, FG is generating additional fake frames basically. It's almost like the TV's that have a "fluid" type option that makes movies look smoother than they are. The problem with doing this on games is you can feel a lot of lag.
      Frame generation is more for high end GPU's where the framerate is already really high. I think AMD added this because it makes their technology/company "look good" more than anything else. I don't recommend using FG.

I haven't had a chance to test the preview driver against the other drivers. However, I'm running a 10+ AFMF benchmark at the moment and the FPS seems great on the preview driver.
      I don't really like this video I made as I was just spinning the camera around mostly which is boring. So I'm doing run throughs now like the benchmarking videos I've made. So side-by-side of AFMF on vs off. It's a bit more interesting when playing the games normally. However the lag is insane, I've seen over 100ms of delay by turning AFMF on haha.

    Well after this video I'm personally a bit confused with a use case of mine
    So basically I'm running a very highly modded version of skyrim,where i generally bounce around 32-40ish fps outdoor and about 50 indoor
    I did try out the paid FSR 2 mod but it somehow reduced the frames and made image worse 😂
    So do you think afmf would be useful for my use case? With some tweaking?
    Of course I play skyrim with the controller...(rog ally's buttons)

      Hey, I'm running a whole other tests of 10+ games to see AFMF on vs off and the latency is pretty extreme. However if the input lag doesn't bother you much, then AFMF could be worth getting. Just as an example I tested Skyrim already and at 42 FPS I was seeing 25ms of lag. Then when turning AFMF on it went to about 70ms and only increased the FPS to 64. This was at 12w @ 900p without mods.

      @@filt3rless That's actually very informative,I think I'll wait for the official implementation by Asus to jump in
      Thrice the input lag isn't worth it I feel
      Thanks for the info!!

    You should try lossless scaling, it has frame generation, and it doesn’t turn off when moving fast. It also interpolates 30-60fps

      Hey I have tried it, but it not working in exclusive full screen is a big drawback IMO.

    Does the amd anti-lag help?

      I turned it on/off and didn't notice much difference. I still think it's worth trying out AFMF, but the input lag will probably be a bit too much for fast paced games, like FPS games.

      Hey I have a link in the description to the driver you'll need and then a tutorial video on how to install it. It should work after following that. As long as you're on the Ally. I heard the Legion Go's portrait display causes issues with it.

      @@bobdole6889 When you open up the AMD control panel and click the gear icon at the top right. What's the version that shows up on the left?
      You'll want to make sure you've downloaded the 23.40.01.10 driver as the 23.30.13.05 driver won't work. In Google it pulls the wrong driver for the first result when I search for it.

    Great video. Curious to see what it does for fps shooters and if it’s triggering the ai anti cheat yet.
