My daughter used Serpopard as a SB counter against counters in her Modern snake deck. It's not tribal or anything, it just so happens that all of the Sultai colors have great snakes that work for her midrange plan. She finally got a Cavern of Souls, but her mana base is really tight, so she can only safely run one copy. So the Serpopard remains in the SB as a just in case. 😂

(td;dr edit) 32 stormsplitters on turn 5. Heartfire Hero can do 15 damage on turn 2 in standard. My Favorite two cards that I'd love to try and build for are Stormsplitter and Hearfire Hero. The latter being my better favorite. Stormsplitter does cost 4 mana which is a pretty big investment for something like the prowess deck, but there are other blitz style decks out there. If you cast it turn 4 and it survives to turn 5, casting 5 one mana instant/sorceries gets you 32 hasty copies of it! on top of likely having other prowess type creatures in play. Would be a blast to try and get that to happen. Heartfire hero would be a great addition to a similar style deck but for a different reason. When it gets targeted by something it gets a +1/+1 counter, but only once per turn (sad). but it also gets to deal damage equal to its power to each opponent when it dies. So there are some standard decks that run Callous Sell-Sword. Once youre done pumping the mouse and hitting for a lot, you can fling it to deal damage to face for 1 more mana. AND THEN the mouse's ability trigger, dealing damage equal to 3x its power to an opponent! It starts with one power. But even with a single Monstrous Rage, the mouse is hitting for 5 on turn two, then burn together for 5 more, then sac the mouse for 15 damage on turn TWO in standard!
They really do like printing cards that Red removal can't realistically deal with, without in this case, four for oneing themselves. While I'm not sure if Ygra will be good enough in Pioneer. Supposedly there's an infinite combo with it in Standard with Camellia that goes infinite that might be playable in Standard.
Rotten Mouth Viper will definitely see play in Commander. Especially in token decks since you can just create a bunch of tokens and then sacrifice 4 of them to make Viper a one drop.
Surprised the Prof didn’t make any Warrior Cats jokes, it’s a book series about a bunch of cats organised into elemental themed tribes, it’s… very relevant!
the biggest issue with Ygra is finding the other two cats. Ygra also costing 5 doesn't help you Collected Company for the win like it does in Amalia... I think Golgari Food is definitely going to be a powerful midrange style deck and I think you'd run a copy of Ygra in it, but I can't see it being the primary win condition when Vamps and Amalia are just that much faster.
I kinda wonder how hard beeg cat is to splash in Rakdos Aristocats Maybe you really want to be in green for mana dorks to accelerate into Ygra Honestly though, I think it's probably worth it to at least splash for mayhem devil in any deck with cat combo Mayhem devil is just that good
I think forage may actually be the most powerful mechanic in this set that might completely break insidious roots decks in standard. Insidious roots, for those that are not aware is a 2 mana golgari enchantment that creates a 0/1 plant token and puts 1/1 counters on all plants you control every time one or more creature cards leave your graveyard. The game plan of insideous roots decks is to kill yourself and play cheap creatures from your graveyard. It doesn’t matter where the creatures go as long as they leave the graveyard. They generally can go to one of three places. Exile, your hand or the battlefield. Usually the best card for triggering this is undead butler, which kills you for 3 on etb and exiles himself from your graveyard after he dies to bring a creature from the graveyard to your hand. This is 2 triggers though. Forage on the other hand turns that cost of exiling three cards from your graveyard into three potential roots triggers simply as a side effect of doing whatever powerful ability you already want to do. The squirrel that taps to let you play creatures from your graveyard until end of turn is absolutely nuts with insidious roots. If you play snarling foreground from your graveyard, you can trigger roots 4 times which allows you to surveil 4 times and potentially put another 4 creatures into your graveyard. You already just generated a 4/5,3/4,2/3, and a 1/2 for 1 mana. This can be as early as turn 3 with the right set-up. Usually this deck is a lot slower at generating this kind of value, but with forage, you can hit the combo just way faster. The plant tokens tap for mana too, as long as the enchantment is around. This puts your opponent in a strange position where they either go for removing your enchantment or building their board to match you. This kind of board presence is so daunting on turn 3 in standard that it’s generally unplayable for the opponents. My current roots deck got me to mythic on arena this season easily and contains no cards above uncommon rarity (except lands and I did eventually add two copies of tyvar after I got to mythic). With just a couple uncommon from bloomburrow it’s going to be fast enough to make boros convoke look like a complete joke. I think the forage cards are simply going to be the strongest cards in this set for me and my play style.
Also as a side note, any cards that allow you to discard a card as a cost can also help you get your 4 creatures into the graveyard for this effect. Getting to do something powerful while choosing which cards you want to discard is fantastic. Playing the squirrel on turn two can also disguise your intentions and allow you to pop off on turn 3 harder. This also doesn’t allow your opponent an opportunity to remove insidious roots. Even if they target it next turn you can tap your squirrel at instant speed and proc the 4 triggers before the removal spell resolves. Currently the only way to do something like this is to use a sacrifice spell like corrupted conviction to sacrifice undead butler for 2 triggers. I cannot emphasize just how big of a difference it is to get 4 triggers instead of 2. Instead of getting a total of 2 creatures with combined attack of 3 and toughness of 5, you get 4 creatures with combined attack of 10 and toughness of 14.

Can someone tell me where the Mana for the Food token sac comes from, I mean i get the loop itself but you have to pay Mana to Sac the Token while no Card in this loop generates Mana, an explanation would be nice
Cauldron Familiar has an effect while in the graveyard that reads, Sacrifice a Food: return this card from the graveyard to the battlefield. Since Ygra makes all creatures into Foods, you just have to sacrifice a creature to get the Familiar back into play, which in turn makes it a Food. You continually sacrifice Familiars to each other for however large you want your cat to become for zero mana.
@@ForeverLaxx thanks, i didnt get that you sacrifice the Token using the familiar rather than doing it with the actual token effect itself, guess reading the card often explains it after all. Thanks for the explanation
Not gonna lie, I'm a little excited for Rottenmouth Viper for Henzie commander lists. This video reminded me, I'm a little surprised that Amalia decks are still kicking in pioneer, especially with their reputation for going infinite. Wasn't it the format where wotc was determined to not let infinite combos be viable?
The REAL reason why Vein Ripper sees play in pionner is thanks to Sorin that force him in board on T3 Ygra has the same flaw of every other graveyard strategy " graveyard hate " (unlike Amalia that gains a new way to restart the combo )
I assume you won’t see this but I’m a bit confused about the part at 2:14 You say that the opponent would need an additional extra creature or food to pay for Ygra’s ward cost (making it a total of 2 more than the # of spare creatures you have) but wouldnt they only need to pay the cost if they were targeting ygra? Also couldn’t they just play the removal on ygra thus only having to sac 1 food?
The combo is instant speed, so if you target Ygra, they can combo on the stack on top of your removal. That's why you need to be able to target Ygra as many times as they have extra food/creatures to restart the combo on the stack on top of your removal. Since they can let the ward trigger resolve before restarting the combo, you have to pay ward each time.
Fun fact it’s possible to have 9 mana usable mana turn 3 in pioneer You’ll need Leyline of the guild pact Llanowar elf 3 lands 1 white 1 green 1 any Faeburrow That means that I now can insta win turn 3 yay
So, imma go on a limb and guess that cards that either prevent combat damage, skips the combat phase, or just cards that act like tif’s protection. I mean inkshield would be potentially the best card against this kinda combo. Especially when the cat has buffs and 10^500 power.
If your opponent is empty handed, you can gift them a card. That forces them to draw the top card. Then you exile that card and can play it. Cruel card indeed.
Man, remember when there were eternal formats, and not just rotating formats that could use whatever old cards happen to work with the most powercrept new cards?
You can use Cruel Claw's Heist after, say, bouncing your opponents Dockside Extortionist to their hand, and then stealing it for yourself LOL. Now all the treasures he made with it, you also just made......

Y'know, a Jund Sacrifice deck with the Ygra combo in the back pocket might not be a bad idea. Not sure though, haven't kept up with Pioneer.
Can someone tell me where the Mana for the Food token sac comes from, I mean i get the loop itself but you have to pay Mana to Sac the Token while no Card in this loop generates Mana, an explanation would be nice
Yea wondering the same thing
Winning on curve is very good.
It would be really interesting to see your thoughts on Star Wars: Unlimited and especially their format "Twin Suns" in comparison to commander.
Glad for a video on pioneer!
I hope Igra ends up beeing a niche in Modern, would like to make a golgari/jund food combo
The REAL reason why Vein Ripper sees play in pionner is thanks to Sorin that force him in board on T3 Ygra has the same flaw of every other graveyard strategy " graveyard hate " (unlike Amalia that gains a new way to restart the combo )
Im using Yngra combo right now, cuz the deck is 60 card is kinda annoying to make it work... but when works is insane lol
Honestly, I might build this on arena with Grief and Assemble the Team. I may as well also throw in a demonic tutor
Cauldron familiar is not legal in Pioneer… what are you talking about?
Prof, would love to see you shuffle up and play or build a Sokrates dec. Who doesn’t love being political when playing commander.
Elemental Cat Factory is a sick band name
Standard player still trying to make a Simic Rotpriest work against agro: very excited for Mockingbird in lieu of the marches.
I assume you won’t see this but I’m a bit confused about the part at 2:14
You say that the opponent would need an additional extra creature or food to pay for Ygra’s ward cost (making it a total of 2 more than the # of spare creatures you have) but wouldnt they only need to pay the cost if they were targeting ygra? Also couldn’t they just play the removal on ygra thus only having to sac 1 food?
The combo is instant speed, so if you target Ygra, they can combo on the stack on top of your removal. That's why you need to be able to target Ygra as many times as they have extra food/creatures to restart the combo on the stack on top of your removal. Since they can let the ward trigger resolve before restarting the combo, you have to pay ward each time.
Fun fact it’s possible to have 9 mana usable mana turn 3 in pioneer
You’ll need
Leyline of the guild pact
Llanowar elf
3 lands 1 white 1 green 1 any
Faeburrow
That means that I now can insta win turn 3 yay
This set gives me Eldraine push the new plane so people like it vibes
So, imma go on a limb and guess that cards that either prevent combat damage, skips the combat phase, or just cards that act like tif’s protection. I mean inkshield would be potentially the best card against this kinda combo. Especially when the cat has buffs and 10^500 power.
Well this is looking like my Pioneer deck of choice next year
Hey, if it breaks up the Vampire/Amalia/Control meta then I’m just a little excited lol
Oh wait god damn it, its cat oven. Cat oven sucks lol.
Cats always return because of the food :D
Don’t forget that this is also in Explorer as well
Where does Cruelclaw's Heist say anything about the top card of the library?
If your opponent is empty handed, you can gift them a card. That forces them to draw the top card. Then you exile that card and can play it. Cruel card indeed.
"EGRA COSTS 5 MANA" *prof holds up 4* hahaha
Yes, but it's green. Could come out turn 3
I think people are sleeping on Hired Claw. I think it has a good shot at popping up in red decks in the format
A staple for Standard.
Man, remember when there were eternal formats, and not just rotating formats that could use whatever old cards happen to work with the most powercrept new cards?
Infamous Cruelclaw strikes me as in interesting option.... or at least it would if pioneer had some better madness cards or something like vengevine
The cat came back
the very next day
The cat came back
they thought he was a goner
but the cat came back - he just wouldn't stay away
This card's combo's also impact Brawl really hard.
Oh wow, another infinite totally broken combo! Thats exactly what this game needed!
I have a feeling that slice from shadows might make an appearance since it cant be countered
You can use Cruel Claw's Heist after, say, bouncing your opponents Dockside Extortionist to their hand, and then stealing it for yourself LOL. Now all the treasures he made with it, you also just made......
My only concern with the cat is that cord of calling is legal in pioneer
That Ward cost gave me whiplash.
"Whut?? Oh. We're doing Pioneer?"
I wonder if wandering empires would work to interrupt the combo by exiling one of the caldron cats?
Vein Ripper actually completely shuts down the new combo, because of its death trigger.
ALL OF THE OTTERS!!!!
There's already a dirt cheap 2x "3 mana cost card" combo that does this.
I don't get why the cost 'sacrifice a food' gets to be paid twice. If you pay to get the cat back, how do you get the counters?
8:44 - Elemental cats? Sounds like Ikoria and its mish-mash of creature types all over again!
Or, y'know... an elemental cat factory...?
I know I thought Ikoria too or I don't know M20
what about hazel brewmaster? You can transform all your foods in spore frog or selfless spirit. And infinite mana with devoted druid
Four fingers or six fingers represents five mana? I'm confused, Professor! :)
I am an English major, sorry!
