Here in Greece and as a student in my university i used to have a small new apartment for 130 euro. Really small, just one "studio" room 30 square meters with a kitchen + bathroom, for 4 years i was a constant customer to IKEA :P. I equipped my little space with 32'' TV, 5.1 home cinema, couch for two, bookshelf x2, a paravan screen so i can split the room in 2 to have my bed and my desk behind it, and a powerful computer connected both with the monitor on my desk and the tv! It was FANTASTIC! I loved this place so much that i cried when i left it, i didn't know that i could live in such a small space, it was easy to clean, it was a relaxing place to sit with you friends and play videogames all night, it had a big balcony with a nice view, the whole building it was full of students anyway so they wouldn't mind if you wanna hear music loud in the midnight (and vice versa). Well, i don't know about living in a small place for 14 years but for 4 years, to me, it was the best place to have as a student!
I like the idea of micro living but the only thing that really irks me is not the small space, since you really don't need that much space but how disgusting some of these bathrooms are. the toilet, the tub, ugh.
In Osaka there are lots of mountains so the air is super humid in some areas if you don't get a dehumidifier your furniture can seriously mold. The bathrooms are harder to keep clean cause the stone/ tile molds and mildews much faster cause the air is always humid.
That is SO true. We never rugged our bathrooms even we lived in Japan. It's much easier to sterilize tile and grout with Clorox mixed with water allowing it to set for a couple minutes.
If you did some cleaning (especially in the kitchen) and also did some KonMari folding, you'd have twice as much space and it would also feel... happier. This is actually quite a large apartment for Osaka. A family member lived in about 200 square feet in Tokishima. His was one room. And no offense, but it really needs to be organized better, especially the closets and kitchen cabinets. If you did, it would change the entire energy of the apartment. For example, a simple hook would let you hang the frying pan inside the lower cabinet beside the cooktop. Thank you for sharing your home. You did a nice job, and I appreciate your being kind enough to show us what is usually hidden. :) PS a plant and a favorite picture to scale on the wall opposite the TV would perhaps also make it feel more home like. Help/question: how do you spell the name of the shoe stand in english? I'd like to buy one. That is wonderful.
I feel sorry for the kitty, she will probably spend her whole life in that apartment. i would get so bored and lonely being there all day by myself while my owners are at work. 😢
Such a shame you deleted all your videos. I loved the binge watch them now and then. So nostalgic. I can't believe my three favorite RUclipsrs from middle school all left japan. Rhymin gaijin, Ryan, and Dave trippin..
A kitten makes any apartment tour twice as interesting. I'm going to watch more videos and see if surrounding neighborhood makes the small apartment seem like a less of a sacrifice because so much is close by and you go out a lot.
I'm sorry but I'm unconvinced that it's a comfortable and and efficient use of space. Compared to other small Japanese apartments I've seen, yours don't appear very well organised and is far from an efficient use of space if you're storing food and clothes in the same closet and clothes and even more kitchenware in the living area. Think you could be more imaginative with your storage units as well, to make use of wall space. Do you think that, because you've been living there so long, you've perhaps stop 'seeing' and don't realise you might need to de-clutter or re-thing how you use space?
I'm single on a 1200sq Ft home n live in my bedroom anyway. I think most of us have a favorite spot we plant ourselves after work, etch. I'm SO converting one bedroom into a studio to tent or live in. I'd rather save money and have an income from rent. Love the idea and I believe its the 'new big'.
In Romania, people don't wear shoes too inside home . It's normal for us , only the guests some time wear, but if they ask "can I stay without shoes , some answer: yes, of course , some say: it's ok , you can stay with the shoes".....
+Sanam's Kitchen I once lived in a one bed room apartment and it had a separate living room, separate kitchen, bedroom, etc. I never once spent time in the living room or the kitchen. I could've done with an even smaller place...!
I would live in it, it looks good, place to cook, fridge, pantry, oh by the way here's a friendly banana tip : Keep Banana's In Fridge, for some reason they last longer, meaning " in fridge they take twice as long to turn black"
I am in New London, Connecticut, USA. I have 400 square feet. It is a smart layout. I don't have a roommate, but 2 cats (I've made lots of vertical spaces for them around the walls). I live quite comfortably. It takes constant picking up, and brushing furniture/cats. Vacuum to keeping cat hair from accumulating. I have adapted, and have become less materialistic. I have some nice things, but I don't tend to keep things if I have not used them in months. I even have a small ebay business out of my closet.
Cozy little place dude. Makes sense to me to save the money in the bank rather than spend it on a few extra feet. Been to Japan several times and stay in hotels with tiny rooms but they have everything I need. Suzu kept stealing the show.
Many of my friends and I live in apartments that are about 269 to 322 square feet (25 to 30 square meters), and we don't call it micro, just..normal one to two person home. So this is really interesting. After watching this video our apartments feel bigger although they aren't
A tiny space can be made to feel larger when there aren't so many walls and compartments. I don't think they would let you remodel the inside but if I could have it my way I would have one large open room with a built in cabinet taking up one wall only. In this wall would also be the kitchen area, so that everything could be put away when not in use. For sleeping I would include two fold down Murphy beds on the opposite wall. The room would thus have a multipurpose appeal to it that would only be seen when the different components were open at a time, a bedroom at night, a kitchen dinette at meal time, a living room study area during the day, etc.
the space of this particular apartement would be enough for me.i at least need 2 rooms(not counting kitchen and bathroom obviously).and i like to live practical.
0:36... Actually, your kitten is showing signs of "excited to see you, lets play" which are cat's version of wagging their tails (dog's signs only). You just have to pet it or throw a yarn ball and she'll be preoccupied playing... Nice apartment, btw.
Kitty stole the show. They always do how they domesticated the humans. Love your home. My X is from Tokyo. He thought my 1000 sq. ft house was a mansion. I just lived in the kitchen bath and dining room. I didn't use the two bedrooms and the living room and patio area. So for me now I think I want to build a house that can fit on the back of a truck and just lift into places in little bits and walls etc and just move with the house when you move to different states. What else do you need? Thanks for the tour. Cool. Grace Namaste
I think this apartment is quite OK for you now. In the future if you have a baby or more pets, you will have to think of a bigger place to live. I live in a house with garden and backyard, trees, plants, lots of space outside the house but in the past I lived for two years in a tiny apartment. Now with my husband and six pets we wouldn't dream of living in an apartment again. We are used to living in our little forest, I love plants( we have a bamboo forest, fruit trees , pine trees, olive trees among so many others ) . I live in a seaside resort, in a beautiful small city, full of tourists in summer but quiet in winter. Greetings from Punta del Este, Uruguay ( South America)
Wonderful tour. Although more space is nice, we only utilize a small percentage of the space we live in usually. For example, we each have our favorite rooms in our house and stay there. Ryan has his favorite rooms chosen for him.
Jeez, no couch, big tv, kitchen table, I thought my first apartment was small its big compared to this. Are they all like this? Is this how middle class lives out there?
Ryan Boundless Ryan, I'm also a fan of japanim, but I seriously think you can have a better standing of life in China... If you really like teaching, you can try your chance in such places like Shenzen, Zushou etc...
hankeybillfred : if you can sympathise with the japanese people, of course... And make some great friends. If not, living in "such marvellous country" as Japan doesn't have any meaning...
ruiFF77 don`t do this ! Don`t pull the racist card, it`s stupid. If you want to complain, complain about the small minded people and the greedy ones but not with that black vs. white vs. brown vs. yellow shit.
Because japan is a island nation, their style of living is using less space as much as possible. That's what makes them great for a nation of about 100 million. It's fantastic how they live on those islands.
At first I thought, that's kind of big, but then you said you're sharing with someone else. I shared an apartment about this same size. I had also lived by myself in a 180 sq ft apartment in the US. It felt like just the right size for myself. But then I used to live in Korea (where I'm from) and Japan and already used to living in a small space. It doesn't feel small to me. Anything bigger is just more space than I would need. Less room, less stuff, less stress.
For me it's not micro at all. In Russia, where I live, 30+ sq. m appartment is pretty decent for one man or couple or even a couple with a small baby. But anyway it was pretty interesting, because though it isn't huge, it looks and feels pretty spacious. And it's interesting to see, how this was achieved. Thank you.
Cool apartment. I like the stove that has an oven. Wish they had those in China. You start going nuts after a year without an oven. I like your video talking about micro living. We in the west don't realize how much space, water, and energy we waste on a daily basis. Many houses in America, for example, have a dining room and a massive kitchen, yet many of us just use the fridge, microwave, and eat in the den with the tv.
my first apartment 30 years ago was about 450SF (officially a "Studio" due to the bath access was in the bedroom), in 5 years i managed to accumulate enough crap to require 2 trips to move it in a 14 ft moving van (supposed to be big enough for a 2 bedroom "american" apt.) in the last 24 years i accumulated even more crap to fill a 900SF condo, i could heat this place in the coldest winter just running all the computers i own. my furnace was out for a while, i heated the place with one stove burner and an 8 inch fan. if i win the lottery, i wouldn't want a "bigger" place, just better, 5-600 SF is fine for me, maybe with an outbuilding and garage... i may have to design it myself, i have 16 years of drafting/design experience and know how "I" like to live. i've owned 3 three cylinder "tiny" cars in the last 27 years, current is an '08 smart (great for everything cept SNOW!) best wishes! i have to watch your other videos on how you got to japan, etc...
Enjoyed the tour of your fine apartment. I learned a lot from seeing how you manage the space. Now I must follow your lead. It will make our environment a lot nicer. . Merry Christmas Ryan and Rie. Thanks for such a great variety of videos.
Perfect little apartment, i will be moving into what is called a bedsit apartment here in the uk, i am waiting to have a viewing i have been offered, as the owners have there works guys go in to check all is safe with the cookers, electricity, and plumbing etc,so just waiting for the owners to call and i can go see it. I like your micro space and how it is laid out. It is not just the cost that is important to me personally, what is, is peace of mind.
That poor animal imprisoned in this awful small flat. The way it's running around indicates that it's quite neurotic. I think they should not be allowed to keep animals in such small places. Very SELFISH.
345 sq. feet is a large space! Countless people live in hotel rooms of just over 100 sq. feet. I did for over 7 years. The trick is to NOT own 1,000 items.
I was feeling a bit depressed with my lot in Aquitaine France. Often called "the Gascony blues"" but after viewing this reportI tell myselflife here is GREAT, SUPER & wonderful.
I came from a big 70 square meter apartment and I bought a small 20 square meter with loft and i dont mind the change, in fact i enjoy the small space as I have less to clean.
I feel the kitten they saved is auspicious. I cannot really explain why. I rescued three cats and they were nice pets but one liked to shred 20 dollar bills!
my cat that I got at the animal shelter has been sharpening his claws on the bathroom sink cabinet that I just built 3 years ago, and a lot of the wood is missing now :/
the smaller your space is, the less you have to clean. always been a fan of minimalistic living. it also makes sure you only buy stuff you really need. since the world population is growing exponentially this will be the normal way of living for the majority of people anyway. oh and cat is soooo cute :3
It's not THAT different from living in large Western cities, they are just as expensive ans space is at a premium. So they save money, don't need a car,(you can rent one for a vacation) and live in a safe, national health care, civilized country. It's not all bad.Not at all.
yumi mango i didnt say its bad - i even like that kind of minimalism. but i think in the future this will be more common for the first-world as a whole anyway.
Oooohhhh....!! I had made a comment on the video when you were looking at the apartments initially that I would've picked another one you had shown as this one had...well, that squat toilet. I didn't know you could buy a seat and whatnot for it. I think I still, personally, would've picked the second place of the three you showed but with the amenities you've added, I see now how this place can become much more cozy. Heh, I guess I shop by what things are at the moment I look at them, not what they can become. I'm too accustomed to Western houses; getting an apartment with no stove, fridge and half a toilet wouldn't fly here (well, my family had to buy a fridge for the house we're renting currently. At least that means it comes with us when we move). I'm again really happy you showed this. A lot more real-life to what can be expected instead of your regular, traditional house or your modernized apartment which, as you said, can be rather pricey.
Sad so many of your vids are not visible to the public anymore. Really like the non flashy down to earth insights
"Shes pretending like she doesn't know me" - Plot twist he walked into the wrong apartment...
sloan boyce lol
+/ Sloansta \ Hahaha!
you are right
Fuck you yes he did!
feels comfy to watch old RB vids
Sure does. Kinda melancholy too.
The apartment feels so depressing.. I don't know why, I usually like small places with no unecessary luxuries.
JUST moved in... 7 months ago LOL
That apartment is actually pretty big compared with some I've seen
*_yeah lol, i had two places smaller than that in Montreal..._*
I'm betting for the price he pays for that, he couldn't even get a room in Vancouver. The rental market is nuts here.
My first place in tokyo was 21.sqm lol this place is a palace compared to that old place.

Look everyone, I'm living in a shithole..!!!
But, it's a "Japanese" shithole....
Lmao @ the post above

you might want to clean the tiles and that bath tub a little better you can see mold and mildew on those that's pretty disgusting.
+Squidward Tentacle , that wasn't bad. I live in the PNW & mold/mildew is a constant here. He isn''t a fussy person. Stop fussin' on him!!
Kate Hare McIntosh I'm sorry kate can you forgive me.
@@teddyteddyist LOL. Definitely. Easypeasy.
thank you for showing your place, I think small places are very cozy.
It loses its charm real fast.
I feel sorry for the kitty, she will probably spend her whole life in that apartment. i would get so bored and lonely being there all day by myself while my owners are at work. 😢
But you're not a fucking cat lol
This makes me appreciate America a lot more. We have so much space here in our homes.
There aint nuthin wrong wit livin in small places. Its cozy and less stressful and u get to appreciate ur home better yo.
Can't you appreciate anything if your heart & mind are set on it regardless of size?
After watching this video, I kinda want to see what a japanese mansion looks like.
A normal apartment in the U.S LOL
Nicholas zarlengo Actually yes, a mansion in Japan is a house for a family, with various bedrooms up to 3 toilets, office living room big bath, etc.
... And probably lots of sliding doors with divided tatami rooms :-)
Thanks for the tour, Ryan, I enjoyed it.
Such a shame you deleted all your videos. I loved the binge watch them now and then. So nostalgic. I can't believe my three favorite RUclipsrs from middle school all left japan. Rhymin gaijin, Ryan, and Dave trippin..
I want to clean his apartment its so dirty yuck! :P
Too good xD
If you think that is dirty, you would die if you saw my apartment.
You merely adopted dirty. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see clean until i was already at my aunt's house.
I don't know if it's dirty necessarily so much as just old and grungy. Not much you can do about that if you rent..
A kitten makes any apartment tour twice as interesting. I'm going to watch more videos and see if surrounding neighborhood makes the small apartment seem like a less of a sacrifice because so much is close by and you go out a lot.

I feel sorry for the cat being in that tiny of space. they need more room to run around in esp if their an indoor cat
I feel bad for the people who have to live with the stinky cat in that tiny apartment. LOL
well she's quite small and when she gets bigger he can walk her outside
I'm single on a 1200sq Ft home n live in my bedroom anyway. I think most of us have a favorite spot we plant ourselves after work, etch. I'm SO converting one bedroom into a studio to tent or live in. I'd rather save money and have an income from rent. Love the idea and I believe its the 'new big'.
Thanks, i like this kind of videos. I like to see different places and cultures.
My apartment in the Army was 300 sq. feet. Basically a living room with attached micro-sized kitchen and bathroom. The best part was the MURPHY BED!!!
Ryan looked like he was doing well back then.
In Romania, people don't wear shoes too inside home . It's normal for us , only the guests some time wear, but if they ask "can I stay without shoes , some answer: yes, of course , some say: it's ok , you can stay with the shoes".....
I appreciate the video as many ppl live in small spaces = valued the living, not the "space"
+Sanam's Kitchen I once lived in a one bed room apartment and it had a separate living room, separate kitchen, bedroom, etc. I never once spent time in the living room or the kitchen. I could've done with an even smaller place...!
like the compact living as functional as full spacious living. but I rather prefer compact!
Living in a very small place showed me all the unnecessary things that one accumulates and that should be thrown away.
"when the fridge door opens the money goes"
**cat goes in**
ROFL
I would live in it, it looks good, place to cook, fridge, pantry, oh by the way here's a friendly banana tip : Keep Banana's In Fridge, for some reason they last longer, meaning " in fridge they take twice as long to turn black"
Dude, did you know you were going to be filming this? Those bits and pieces laying around your sink was just gross.
Look RUclips, someone with no life ^
I am in New London, Connecticut, USA. I have 400 square feet. It is a smart layout. I don't have a roommate, but 2 cats (I've made lots of vertical spaces for them around the walls). Cozy little place dude. Makes sense to me to save the money in the bank rather than spend it on a few extra feet. Been to Japan several times and stay in hotels with tiny rooms but they have everything I need. Suzu kept stealing the show.
oh my god, that kitten is so cute!
I loved this video !! Loved the advises as well. Ryan you inspire me in so many ways. Oh and Suzu was ADORABLE!!!!!
Thank you for the tour. This is very familiar to me. I appreciate you letting me into your home. I think it's very nice.
That is perfect space for me, I could live in that :) nice video Ryan
Many of my friends and I live in apartments that are about 269 to 322 square feet (25 to 30 square meters), and we don't call it micro, just..normal one to two person home. So this is really interesting. After watching this video our apartments feel bigger although they aren't
Not only is it very small, it's not very clean! Each have their own way of living, but this looks something really difficult to get used to.

Your apartment is as big as my bedroom
Since i spent 80% of my time in my bedroom maybe i should rearrange it as an apartment too
I honestly wouldn't mind living in a small space
You would if you went from a huge place..
the space of this particular apartement would be enough for me.i at least need 2 rooms(not counting kitchen and bathroom obviously).and i like to live practical.
Personally I like having a bit more room, but if you can make it work for yourself that's all that matters.
0:36... Actually, your kitten is showing signs of "excited to see you, lets play" which are cat's version of wagging their tails (dog's signs only). You just have to pet it or throw a yarn ball and she'll be preoccupied playing... Nice apartment, btw.
0:48 Said the man to the officer, referring to his "daughter"
Obviously, the style and amenities are a little different, but space-wise not that different from a new york apartment.
So in other words get what you only need, I understand
the kitty seems to be happy living in a small place. guess its ok because the place is still livable.
Bigger and cheaper than London. Lucky.
Much as I like your apartment Ryan, Suzu stole the show with her cuteness!
Kitty stole the show. They always do how they domesticated the humans. Love your home. My X is from Tokyo. He thought my 1000 sq. ft house was a mansion. Great video dude, inspires me in alot of ways.
Am I the only one who thinks that cat has a little TOO much freedom..
Yes....what do you mean, too much freedom?
Gads! who knows.. It's the end of June now..
Jeez, no couch, big tv, kitchen table, I thought my first apartment was small its big compared to this. Are they all like this? Is this how middle class lives out there?
Jason B Yes, this is middle class living in a larger than average apartment for a single person.

and keep everything neat and organized.
Lol the little stove burner is common. I've seen it in nearly every video from people living in Japan.
Thanks for sharing. Looks very comfy.
Ryan, thank you so much for sharing this--it's fascinating! Your cat is so adorable. Hugs from Texas!

Thank you for the tour of your nice, compact home Mr. Boundless. I think vids like this, which show how others live, are really interesting.
Thank you for sharing your experience in such detail. Sparking some ideas on how we can save money rebuilding after a wildfire in northern California.
Kitty cant escape the petting in such a tiny appartment
I like the idea of having the sink, shower, and bathtub all basically in the same place. Why waste all the extra space.
For me it's not micro at all. In Russia, where I live, 30+ sq. m appartment is pretty decent for one man or couple or even a couple with a small baby.

Not enough room to change your mind.

my first apartment 30 years ago was about 450SF (officially a "Studio" due to the bath access was in the bedroom), in 5 years i managed to accumulate enough crap to require 2 trips to move it in a 14 ft moving van (supposed to be big enough for a 2 bedroom "american" apt.) in the last 24 years i accumulated even more crap to fill a 900SF condo, i could heat this place in the coldest winter just running all the computers i own. my furnace was out for a while, i heated the place with one stove burner and an 8 inch fan.
if i win the lottery, i wouldn't want a "bigger" place, just better, 5-600 SF is fine for me, maybe with an outbuilding and garage... i may have to design it myself, i have 16 years of drafting/design experience and know how "I" like to live. i've owned 3 three cylinder "tiny" cars in the last 27 years, current is an '08 smart (great for everything cept SNOW!)
best wishes! i have to watch your other videos on how you got to japan, etc...
the comment about the cat pretending not to know you made me think like if she really didnt ans you went into someones house lol😂😂
A "Magic Eraser" will make that tile look like new!
That's about the same size as my kitchen that I have here in north Texas .. I love that kitten!!
Well done. Very informative.
Even if your apartment is old, it's way terribly dirt! Old and small has nothing to do with keeping it clean...
That poor animal imprisoned in this awful small flat. The way it's running around indicates that it's quite neurotic. I think they should not be allowed to keep animals in such small places. Very SELFISH.
Having a small apartment is cool, I prefer having a very small place. It should just look more modern and recently renovated.
345 sq. feet is a large space! Countless people live in hotel rooms of just over 100 sq. feet. I did for over 7 years. The trick is to NOT own 1,000 items.
I'm You Section 8 ??
What a wonderful, cozy home! Wish I could experience life in Japan.....
Very informative - thanks.
Nice. almost reminds me of the same space as an R.V. or even a dorm room in college.
Shows that we DON'T need a lot of stuff to live happily & satisfied. Thanks for sharing your wee cute apartment & that is the most gorgeous kitty
Yea, that's why he's depressed every 3 months. :)
Hey, if he's happy, good for him. Living like that is definitely not for me.
I was feeling a bit depressed with my lot in Aquitaine France. Often called "the Gascony blues"" but after viewing this reportI tell myselflife here is GREAT, SUPER & wonderful.
I came from a big 70 square meter apartment and I bought a small 20 square meter with loft and i dont mind the change, in fact i enjoy the small space as I have less to clean.
watching this apt tour makes me want to take a shower.
My living room is twice the size of your whole apartment, and it's not even what I'd call a big living room.
your cat is so cute
So cross-eyed you can count the chickens in the backyard 👀
32 m2 is a tinny ???? aaahahah, i live in 20 m2 :D americans are so spoiled ...
Not spoiled...... Prosperous.
Yes! In Finland, especially centrum of Helsinki its very big apartment for "single" people.
UrbCrafter )
32 m2 is micro living?! God, people are idiots.
It would be prosperous if it was in a city like NY, but who needs large apartment in the middle of nowhere they call suburbs?
