2008 NBA Playoffs: Boston Celtics vs Atlanta Hawks

  • Games 1 and 2 were Celtic routs, keyed by great team defense (Atlanta averaged 79 points in the first 2 games) and balanced Celtic scoring (six players were in double figures in Game 1, five in Game 2). The most buzz was generated by Mike Bibby stating that Celtic fans were bandwagoners after Game 1, prompting boos every time he touched the ball in Game 2.[2]
In Game 3, Atlanta showed its athleticism with an array of dunks from Josh Smith (26 points) and a strong interior performance by the rookie Al Horford (17 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists), who also jawed with Paul Pierce near the end of the game. There would be more jawing in Game 4 between Zaza Pachulia and Kevin Garnett, but the outcome was a surprise: thanks to fourth quarter heroics by Joe Johnson and Smith, who combined to score 32 of Atlanta's 34 4th quarter points, the upstart Hawks rallied from a 10-point third quarter deficit in Game 4 to tie the series going back to Boston. Boston dominated Game 5, but in Game 6, six Hawks players finished in double figures to force a winner-take-all Game 7. The Hawks were no match for the Celtics in Game 7, as the Celtics held them to 26 points in the 1st half. 3 minutes into the 2nd half, the series' tensions finally boiled over when Marvin Williams was ejected for committing a hard foul on Rajon Rondo. Then after that, Kevin Garnett was noted for trucking Zaza Pachulia while going for a screen.

I was at game 3 in 2008! One of my best Hawks memories. Game 7 was a let down but the Hawks finally getting in the playoffs was extremely exciting. The crowd was unbelievable then too. Everyone was supporting them, the Celtics fans in the arena were eating major humble pie. One Celtics fan I was talking to on RUclips even got a heart attack from the Hawks beating the Celtics in game 6, lol. Hope he's alright but 2008 was a good time. GO HAWKS!

It's less shit than it was a few years ago. The Atlanta crowds are pretty decent considering Atlanta's notorious weak fan support.

Oh man, this would have been the greatest playoff upset in NBA history.
if this young and inexperienced Haws team that finished with both the 8-seed and with a losing record at 37-45 beaten this Celtics team that won almost 70 games and had the best record in all the NBA and that this Celtics team was filled with star players and experience, this would have been the biggest upset in NBA history.
With that said, this Hawks team had a nice roster going on that would develop into a playoff threat for years to come, and had a nice coach in Mike Woodson.
Just to note = In the 2014 postseason, Atlanta made the postseason as the 8th seed and with a losing record at 38-44, and they almost beat the 1-seed Pacers in the first round, going 7 games against them (Pacers won 56 games that season). In this series, Atlanta was up 3-2 with game 6 at home in Atlanta, but the Pacers would win games 6 and games 7.
In 2015, Atlanta won 60 games and got the 1-seed in the East, with a very nice style of basketball they played, making it all the way to the East Finals, before losing to Lebron and the Cavs.
Bottom line, the Hawks from 2008 till 2017, made the postseason all 10 seasons, with two almost very amazing upsets as 8-seeds with losing record, one 60-win season as the 1-seed making it all the way to the East Finals,

I was at a co-worker party watching Game 3. It was a big party with everyone clinging to every basket of cheers and agony. As an Atlantan, that game showed the fight and heart of Atlanta fans.

Had the 2008 Boston Celtics squad been eliminated by the Hawks or the Cavaliers despite having 3-2 series leads in both of them, Doc Rivers would still have no rings in his head coaching resume.

AHH man I started learning basketball when AL won his NCAA chips and this was one of my favorite series against him as a rookie. Then for him to join them mentoring the Jays with JT having the same type of year he had against LJ cavs wow. Therefore, yes it's only fitting that he came to Boston and return to wearing #42 to win at this stage! #NBA at its core best producing great men and team players!

They are still the only team to go to 7 games in the first round and then win the championship.
ALSO, this is all Croc rivers' fault. Rasheed Wallace has recently revealed that Croc doesnt make adjustments for his team. He relies on hisbplayers to make adjustments which is stupid! Croc rivers has again and agakn and again shown us why he isnt meant to be a coach. In the Indiana vs Boston series, the Atlanta vs Philly series , in the Clippers vs Denver series(where he made the dumbass adjustment of ....*double teaming Jokic...on of thr best passers ever born.... , and in 2023 the Philly vs Boston series he has shown time and again that he never makes adjustments and gets his ass kicked cause of it!
