Weird Video, but lots of videos were like this. This is at the beginning of the MTV Age, or as I call the 3rd British Invasion. When MTV first started off, the station brought in tons of British music via video. England at the time was the only major game in town producing music videos. Eventually, American bands began making music videos beyond live concert clips, but making videos were expensive and MTV hasn't proven themselves as a reliable moneymaker, especially when record sales were down. So, record companies produced CHEAP and experimental videos to get on the MTV market. What you are witnessing is the American counter-attack to the deluge of Britsh music.
From 1980 - 1983 MTV would show some of the weirdest, cheapest music videos ever.
I would pair this video with Herbie Handcock's "Rockit" (The Breakdancer's Holy Grail)

And she was is about his friend in high school who use d to skip classes sit by the chocolate YooHoo factory and drop acid.
Once I heard David explain that at a show, it made me see those lyrics in a totally different way!
And she was lying in the grass
And she could hear the highway breathing
And she could see a nearby factory
She's making sure she is not dreaming
See the lights of a neighbor's house
      Now she's starting to rise
      Take a minute to concentrate
And she opens up her eyes
The world was moving she was right there with it and she was
The world was moving she was floating above it and she was
      And she was
And she was drifting through the backyard
And she was taking off her dress
And she was moving very slowly
      Rising up above the earth
Moving into the universe and she's
      Drifting this way and that
Not touching the ground at all and she's
      Up above the yard
The world was moving, she was right there with it and she was
      (Hey, hey)
The world was moving, she was floating above it and she was
      (Hey, hey, hey)
She was proud about it, no doubt about it
She isn't sure about what she's done
No time to think about what to tell him
No time to think about what she's done and she was
      (Hey hey, hey hey, hey)
And she was looking at herself
And things were looking like a movie
      She had a pleasant elevation
She's moving out in all directions oh, oh oh

If I am not mistaken, this song was composed by the band by having the members write down pithy sayings of one or two sentences. They then took all of them threw them in a hat and pulled them out in no particular order and concocted this stream-of-consciousness lyric.

    • @wreckingKREW1
      @wreckingKREW1 4 года назад +3

Yea,that was the basic concept for the entire "Speaking In Tongues" album. They illustrated this on the tour by having screens set up behind the band during "Making Flippy Floppy" and having 3 words appear on 3 different screens. Some kinda matched up,others not as much. Very few bands pushed as hard to recreate themselves from record to record and always strive for something totally original as much as Talking Heads did. One of my absolute favorite bands ever.

As many here have suggested, their concert movie "Stop Making Sense" is a must watch, with the volume way up. The free version on RUclips is about 4 min 9 sec short of the full runtime of 1:28:06, even tho' it says "Full Concert." Which means it's been sped up a little bit, which would seem to be the case from the sound of David Byrnes voice in the opening. Tina Weymouth on bass is simply superb. There is no doubt you would love the entire concert. Their performances of every song in that movie are definitely the best they have.

managed to pulled it off. So talented that in his collection of awards are an Academy Award, Golden Globe, Grammy and in the Rock And Roll HOF. Knew many who were turned off by the group’s
videos during the influential MTV days.Simply thought they were to weird. But were so good that they pulled it off.
