The Four Epee Distances -- DRFA

  • Here I build on top of the three counter-attacks I went over in my previous series and I describe competitive drills to develop our assessment and control of distance. I run variations of these drills at every practice; I believe they are the fastest way to improve your fencing.
    Update -- I've created a mnemonic for the four distances: DRFA
    Duck
    Retreat and riposte (counter-attack #2)
    Fleche
    Advance lunge to short target (hand, leg), alternatively Angulate when taking a free shot on defense i.e. counter-attack #4
    Now when my students make a distance mistake, I can just say DuRFA to remind them.

    I've been fencing for 4 years and I'll NEVER be allowed to have a go at épée! :( Still, foil for the win! ;) It really IS the hardest! XD
