An exceptional month indeed. I ran a weather station in central Scotland at the time and was astonished by the volume of snow and the sheer length and depth of the cold spell. The whole month had lying snow - which piled over 60cm at one point. And December the 6th produced a 12 hour spell of heavy snow that crippled the roads infrasturcture of the central lowlands, with temperature plummeting below -18ºC on the following two nights and barely scraping above -10ºC by day. The average temperature for the month at my site was -4.8ºC, the coldest month of all months since Feb 1947 in this area. And the 2nd coldest since the 19th century.
That is one December that i will never forget in a hurry. What a bitterly Cold and Snowy month it was here in Ireland also. The night time Temperatures hit minus 20 in places and no more than minus 5 during the day. The snow that fell was unreal. Thank you for the historical videos Gavin i find them very interesting keep up your good work.
17 into the 18th was when a streamer set up from the west coast of wales, stretching south east towards Bristol & south east areas of there. Thought my area (20 miles south west of Bristol) might miss out but nope, that streamer drifted south & once it started snowing it didn't stop until early hours of the 18th. More snow on the 22nd & Christmas day was a winter wonderland, deep snow, clear blue skies, not official white Christmas according to the met Office but it was one for the rest of us greeted with those scenes upon opening the curtains that morning.
Hello Gav, Awesome video, I remember this winter, it was deadly, a glacier covered land, I heard a volcano caused it, all the chemical's sucked up the Scandinavian sky and released about 9 months later over our united kingdom
I just thought I'd watch this! Look at all the mild air surging north as well. Looking at the CETfor 1890 it was a much colder year over all, with a miserably cold summer too.
At the end of November (just as this cold started) my Son came up to me as I left the house, he said- Dad it's going to snow at 6oclock, and a 6oclock it came down, and didn't stop for weeks! I often wonder where/who he got that information from, but he doesn't remember
I'm remember this month for all the wrong reasons. For me in Harwich we had weeks of very cold weather with numerous snow events.as Gav mentioned in the video on the 22,23,24, December that mild weather moved in and it was all over. All I wanted was to see was a white Christmas. Totally scuppered.😡😡
I'm so gutted that we won't be seeing a white Christmas one again 😢 this year it looked so promising 😢 10 days ago.I Think I will have to go to siberia next Christmas for Christmas 🎄 😢 lol 👍 😆
I was on a Caribbean cruise and on the 18th of November my mother text me saying there was over a foot of snow fell overnight, then i got daily texts that it wouldn't stop snowing, i got home to Manchester airport no snow? got on the train to County Durham it got deeper and deeper and by the time i got to my hometown on the edge of the dales, we had 3ft of snow and it didn't stop until March, it hit -17.5 in my garden it was a crazy winter i loved it! we had drifts of over 10ft in my street iv never dug snow so much in my life, then the next 2yrs we had the same but not as long. roll on the snow!!!!
Wish we could have a December like this again
Yep. 2018 Feb/march was good but bothing can compare to 2009/10/11 winters

18th December 2010 was EPIC for my neck in the woods (Central London). Heavy snow which accumulated to at least 8 inches in three hours with -7c! :)
we had snow Oct 28th 2008 which was a trio set of great cold snowy winters 2008,2009 and the finale 2010
very interesting - love the cold winters

I remember too how cold that winter was in the Netherlands. Mainstream media does'nt report on this only focusing on warm records.

Hello Gav,

Similarities to what we’re seeing now (Late Nov 2022) is quite interesting. Fingers crossed
Dec 18th had a afternoon reading of -8 in Birmingham
I just thought I'd watch this!

Idk why but January 2010 was way colder for me. There was a week in Manchester where the temperatures were under -10
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 Gav to you and your family I hope you have a good one 👍 and a happy new year 🎉
We had snow Thunder in my area of Ireland on the night of the 28th of November 2010 which was a Friday night
You mean Thundersnow
If you've not done it yet do feb/mar 2018 beast from east

Never call a person a liar!
6.5 below 0 is more than cold for snow so he is telling the truth
@Scott Jefferson he's talking about 2010 NOT 2011
Once again I meant
