GREAT to hear Phil Bennett I honestly loved to watch Wales play in those days Phil Gareth JPR so much talent just FANTASTIC rugby.and effortless team work AWESOME and yes I am an English man but love my rugby and obviously loved that WONDERFUL Welsh team.
The most magical sequence of steps I've ever seen on a rugby pitch. Like most of us, I've watched and rewatched this try and I'm still amazed that he had that third sidestep for Kirkpatrick. Phil Bennett was a marvel. Thanks for the upload.
He could run almost as fast sidewards as he could forwards, Lanelli invited us to train with them when I was in the army and we were to be playing Llanelli youth. at Stradey park. The senior team was there too with the greats..Phil Bennet was like Billy Whizz could hardly get your hands on him. fantastic player. Great club.(70's)
Don't care really who was the greatest ever fly half ...but this bloke lit up my youth watching his steps ...man was a total genius ..I'm surprised they didn't question him on the Brinks Robbery ...he could pick any locked defence 😂
Phil Bennet had an auto side step button, for every yard he ran forward he 'd sidestep twice. A great player, a true rugby legend and much beloved in Wales, RIP.
Nobody ever doubted the quality of Phil Bennett! For Gareth, it was a piece of piss, not one of his best. The genius was in intercepting the forward pass before anybody noticed!
I was in The Miner's ward in Sully Hospital ... we watched the game on the tv at the end of the ward .... I have never seen so many stitches split at the same time! :-)
What a team, who was the best? They all were, I guess. JPR, Phil, and Gareth, sure, but also everybody else. I just wanted to see them win, even if against England!
I believe I had the best seat in the North Stand that wonderful day. All has been said about the mastery displayed by the Babas that day. But what was not seen or said on tv, because of the little bubble of movement tracked by the cameras following only the action on the ball, was Grant Batty on the Allblacks left wing corner flagging at great pace, he undoubtedly had John Bevan covered but that extra two yards of pace and interception delivered by Sir Gareth Edwards was the coup de gras that defeated Batty’s valiant defence. I thank God that I witnessed rugby’s greatest moment. You all know what Max Boyce said, “l was there”.
My memory of Phil Bennett’s magical side steps was firstly the sense he was about to be splattered by the all blacks back row pounding down on him - they thought had him for dead, but the magical amalgam of self preservation, rugby genius and athleticism preserved him. Yes ! The speed of his hypnotic dance that unique day, a slight of foot you might stay, entranced the worlds best back rows and made all three-of them look like two left footed novices at a twmpath, pure Merlin magic.
he might have struggled with the physical side, that wasn't his forte (nor was it Barry John's), but he would have dazzled at times all the same, as Jonathan Davies did.
Golden days...amateur players, passion, flair. Now we have rugby union that is as exciting as paint drying, just an inch by inch battle between two teams of monsters.
I always think the All Blacks don't actually get the credit for playing their part in a truly wonderful game that became benchmark setting for how Rugby can be played. The All Blacks ran the ball and counter attacked and didn't try to slow the game down or dominate through the forwards which they could have done. The only player who was unhappy about that was the delectable Grant Batty. I don't think any game before or since has quite so many memorable moments, from this try, to Duckham's side stepping, JPR's extraordinary play as the attacking full back, the one handed handling of Tom David and Derek Quinnell and the amazing strength of John Bevan and on and on.
Bryan Williams was known for high tackles, even though he was a great player.. He and many AB's tackled the 71 lions the same way on many occasions, including JPR at least 5 or 6 times.. JPR was so strong and expected it, so just shrugged it off.. He was the original granite hard full back, and the best counter attack FB of his era..
6 of the 7 who took part in the try were Welsh- only Pullin wasn't. Bennett, Williams, Pullin, Dawes, David, Quinnell, Edwards. Slattery had an excellent match, like various others and the match was pretty much won by half time.

Legend. Cry every time I see that try and phil is right cliff Morgans commentary is the icing on the cake.

The entire geographical mass of New Zealand slipped a metre to the left when Benno did that first side step

I love him, he was a great player.
It was as much Phil Bennetts's try as Gareth Edwards'. He has never had the same accolades for it.
oh I think most people remember those dazzling sidesteps very well. He had a great match, as did Duckham and Tom David

Rubbish he has had a world of accolades everybody knows that Phil sparked the move off.
Don't forget that JPR was almost decapitated twice in that move also...
Best try I've ever seen & commentary.

Beennett is a legend, would have loved to have seen him playing league.

True - in the modern game you'd not even see Phil - he'd be lost among those 'monsters'.

Youre great Phil.
The greatest sporting moment and the greatest commentary ? I think so ....
I wonder which would win in a vote: Sir Cliff here, or Ken Wolstenholme's closing moments from the '66 'round ball' World Cup.
TMO for that tackle on JPR. A yellow definitely and maybe a review post game with 3 match ban to follow. Shocking tackle. What was he thinking.

Different times
Best thing about JPR Williams?
He could stomp you into the dirt.......then take care of your injuries, as the was an MD!
Red card.
@@tollyt7465 Best full-back of ANY era.
“What a score!”
Barry John,s retiring what are gonna do ? I know a guy called Phil Bennett.
That tackle on JPR would be a straight red these days....it wasn't even a tackle, more like a clothesline
Phil Bennett - better than Barry John?
How to be a ballet dancer, gymnast and illusionist all in 10 seconds.
Should have gone back for that high tackle.
As Max Boyce would say “I was there”
1:18 Foul high tackle by Brian Williams on JPR.
RIP, so sad
I did not think Fergus Slattery was Welsh. Phils memory getting a bit welsh only.

@@mizofan Slattery is Irish.
@@Lord_Hillcrest01 Yes, he knows that perfectly well. Simply mentioned Slattery's game because the previous guy did.
@@alanevans9692 Um ok then.
Irish.
