As a gun enthusiast I'll chime in here. The blunderbuss was basically an early archaic form of the shotgun. Unlike the musket it's often mistaken for the blunders wider barrel makes it a scatter-gun loaded with multiple projectiles known as shot -- small balls of 00 buck. You could still load with a large enough single "slug" but that defeats its purpose. If you ran out of ammo people would load with horseshoe nails, bones, gravel etc etc for improvised ammo. Really just about anything that will fit inside can be used.
