I have the exact same kit. I recieved it as a gift from my nephew. I to added some of my own items and removed some. The whistle is ok you just have to blow on it the right way. The addition of some items I added was 6 tealight candles, a better folding knife, 6 1ltr water purification pills, a 1ltr water bag, A mini denatured alcohol lamp fueled up, sealed in a medicine bottle to prevent leaks and evaporation of the alcohol and 1oz of extra fuel, in an eyewash bottle, repurposed but clearly marked as fuel. A hot melt glue stick. A few different sizes of gauze pads, a small roll of medical tape, 2 extra heavy duty rubber bands 1" wide X 9" long, for use in making a slingshot or fishing spear or a snare spring.2 metal tins, 1 slide top 2 3/8" long X 11/4" wide X 1/2" thick as a mini boo boo kit with assorted bandaids, antobiotoic ointment, alcohol pads, iodine pads, and a round 2"dia X 3/4"thick tin with screw on lid/w seal in lid as a med tin with the usual items, imodium, benadryl, activated charcoal pills, prescription meds, pain meds etc. Sealed into heat shrink tubing sealed at both ends. In different color tubes. And list of items and info on colors to identify each kind of pills and a desiccant pk. Some cotton balls, a pencil, some paper for writing and 2 mini twist lights 1" X 1/2", 1white, 1purple. A compass, miniature zippo style capsule lighter, 3 electrolyte powder mixes. A little snare wire. And still room for a little more gear.
Damn! For $6 you can't go wrong! If the case is waterproof that's worth six bucks alone. The mag/steel actually looks pretty decent. If the notebook really is waterproof it's worth a couple of bucks at least. The towels don't have a ton of survival use but I really love 'em for camping. The folding silverware isn't useful for survival but it would be a nice camping gadget. The light looks cheap but it lights up at least. I like it after your additions! I wonder what it costs if you buy it at Walmart?
Wow! Can't believe your reviewing a kit I own. I bought this "kit" at Walmart for the box. I paid $4.88 or something. Just wanted the box. It has kept my phone dry while kayaking. Glad to see the other stuff has some use.
I would say that for $6 your doing very well for your money. My sister brought me something similar for Xmas. Just as a joke. But here's the thing: No the knife isn't a Swiss Army and no, it won't take any abuse but: The blade actually took a reasonable edge and the can opener actually works. It's not brilliant but it works. Beats a razor blade or Detachable knife. Is it the kit I would want? No. If some evil sod decided to dump me on an island for a week with it would I be happy? Probably not. Would I be happy to have it? Hell yes!
Another great video Eric. I would pay very good money for the kit you made up. Coming from the UK, even being able to purchase a cheap survival kit from Walmart fills me with a little envy. Nothing like that exists in UK stores or even what pass for stores selling outdoor gear. There are a few (very good) online stores that sell such kits but we pay much more for them than you do. People engaged in outdoor pursuits in the UK may invest in decent clothing and footwear but are largely ignorant of survival requirements. Our areas of wilderness are small but are frequently deadly largely for unprepared people.
Peter Walsh Peter, you have a very innovative supplier in the U.K. check out these folks. I have bought several items from them. They were impacted by your countries restrictions on blades so they no longer include one in their kits. info@polymathproducts.co.uk
@@KitbashedSurvival You can get any size knife you want, you just can't carry one ''without good reason'' unless it's a folding, non-locking blade under 3 inches long. Knives & machetes etc. marketed as ''zombie killers'' have been outlawed as far as I know. But I bought a standard gardening machete for just £5 (£6) online from a home/garden webshop, and it was delivered to my door by Royal Mail, they didn't ask for a signature or proof of age. I live in a block of flats (appartment block) with no gardens anywhere near lol. I've also ordered a few bushcraft knives no problem. I've also carried a large knife in my bag, but to work in a restaurant kitchen, which again is allowed as that is ''good reason'' to carry it..
Must admit that many years ago I bought the female version (rose gold color) of this at walmart during around Christmas when they were on a stocking stuffer display. I was new to prepping and thought how cool! I’ve since ditched most of the contents and instead added some stuff I might need while boating/skiing with friends - extra sunscreen packets, minor first aid, some allergy supplies, bug wipes and then stash my phone, some cash, and car key in it. I cut about foot long section of a pool noodle and ran some rope thru the center and tied and then hook the case to it in case it goes overboard so it will float. Tfs!
Small tube of Blistex will fit in by the lighter. Tape the push lever on the lighter so the fluid doesn't leak out all over the rest of the stuff in the kit. Put the emergency poncho in your pocket along with more toilet paper and some hand sanitizer. I think it is a great video and a good kit. Good Job Sir!
They sell an almost identical box like that at Walmart except it is blue. I am a field watercolor artist and I use that to hold all my art supplies. Love it. I enjoy your videos.
Great video. I got a few of these at WM for $7 thinking BOB or EDC (originally $21 during Christmas). Then I found them for $2.50 and bought 22 kits for a friend that runs a Boy Scouts camp in Nogales. I was wondering how to turn it into a decent kit or EDC as they are a good starting point. Maybe missing a signal mirror, fishing wallet card and line, magnifier, salt tablets and Vaseline cottons. Also a $1 sewing kit might fit and mini crazy glue. Great job.
having been massively disappointed with the quality of shelf bought survival kits i'm with you all the way, build your own from some decent quality components so that when you do actually need a kit it wont let you down. thanks for the honest review :)
It is undeniably well worth $6, the magnesium ferro rod combination alone is worth that! The case allows the inclusion of other goodies too. This is the extremely rare instance in which one cannot buy the individual components for below the selling price of the complete kit.
It's a good starting point for what you paid and it provided a good lesson, don't rely on store bought survival kits. I got some of the magnesium ferro rod things, they're OK they work but the metals very soft, they get used fairly quickly you wouldn't want to rely on them for a long time.
Love your kit challenges....they are really cool and believe it or not it gives me ideas of what i can do if i have to replace gear or maybe rethink gear....thanks eric always love your videos😊
Probably put some 1" duct tape along with a couple ranger bands around the Bic lighter for tinder. Great idea for a small survival kit. Thanks for sharing.
would have gone with the victorinox that has the magnifying glass. It can help you see splinter wounds better and focus sunlight to light tinder. The saw blade is generally useless as you can physically snap any timber thin enough to cut with the saw. Otherwise a really useful kit and a great video - thanks for posting 👍
ditching the wiresaw is a bad idea. you could extend it and attach it to a sapling with the loops for a bow saw to cut LOGS. and if you tied your paracord to it with a small weight on the end you could throw it over high branchs pull the cord untill the saw meets the wood and saw away/ personaly i love this kit for 6 dollars it has everything you need/ remember your knowledge is first and your kit is a bonus
Those whistles are pretty good some can have quality issues and be louder then other or not work at all but look like they do. I use a bulk bag of them to make my own wristbands and have tested them all and out of 25-50 maybe 7 don't work at all.
I agree with losing the penknife style KNS set, but I would replace it with a SPORK. I know it's not absolutely essential, but it's a moral booster, not to have to eat with your fingers.
You can find the case alone for $6. And the combination ferro rod. And the notebook. So, this whole thing for $6 is just fine. Ditch the SAK knock-off, put the cutlery tool in your work bag or something, keep the rest, and put more stuff in the kit. I was ready to laugh at this as well, but for $6 the kit is fine. Certainly not a good survival kit, but for $6 there are some useful items that will cost you way more if you buy them individually.
Iv never been a fan of pre-built kits other than maybe the ones made by Esee. You mentioned the Ozark trail kit was $6, thats a pretty good price for starting off a custom kit.
I bought this "kit" at Walmart for that exact reason. I paid $4.88 or something. Just wanted the box. It has kept my phone dry while kayaking. Totally worth it.
This video was a lot of fun. I liked the jokes and also putting together your own kit. You have to test equipment to know if it's good! You can't just look at it! Yes there are things of such poor quality that when you see them (in person) you can rule them out immediately as junk. But many other things look good (or at least passable) until you try them. Is the waterproof container actually waterproof? Does the wire saw actually work without breaking? You know this principle because you added a Victorinox knife. You have used them for many years and know that they work. This is why I would say it's always better to put together your own kit with familiar items.
I've also never seen a combined magnisium rod and ferro rod I have in the past come across a pocket size magnisium block about credit card size but only thicker with a small ferro rod attached to one side with a hole in one corner so that a saw striker could be attached via a peice of cord
I’ve used an Ozark Trail headlamp for years that will not die... it’s been dropped, left, lost and found..... I’ve used it in heavy rain putting the animals up or loading the truck ..... thing is bulletproof.... I think I paid $13 for it.... wish I’d bought two..
Take a couple heavier rubber bands, cut down the packaging on the survival straw to fir the outside of the box, the put on one side and the poncho on the other and rubber band them on the outside of the box! Then ya got it all! Ha ha. On the inside I would have included a single edged razor blade in the 1st aid kit.
Imo it's a good start for the price, I'm not a fan of knock off knifes but I get it for those who can only afford cheap. But it's a good starting place with many options for add ons. And I agree 100% with you on that ferro rod definitely cool compared to that other cheap block kind that imo sucks.

I watch him take 3hrs ounce to get a fire going. I went to him, oh look were dead now. And this was just a backyard fire. He went I was a boy scout, do you want it right or wrong. Me I just want a dam fire going unless then 15mins. He goes fine u do it. Had that thing going in 10. I laugh because he kept telling me I was doing it wrong. I'm like you took 3hrs, no fire. Your right way sucks. Me 10 mins, the wrong way. Hate to tell you this, but my wrong way safes are butts if we were lost in the woods.
I would love to give away 6$ for the spork with a real firesteel... not bad at all. Btw you need to keep duck tape if you want to use magnesium, without a sticky place that keeps the magnesium in place just breathing let it fly away and you will never have tinder.
As far as it goes, I feel like the box and compressed towels and ferro rod are worth the $7 I paid. Yeah, I'll probably eventually move to one. The camera I use also does this noise reduction thing at the beginning of each take that makes it muffled for a few seconds. Been trying to find a way to disable that feature as it's really annoying.
My personal survival kit would probably be over $3000.oo or more to put together. The best of everything. After all my life depends on the best products. Regards from Ody Slim
Sir my surivial kit is a bunch of different kits I've got a fire kit I've got a first aid kit I've got a field tool kit ect ect this comes from my years of hunting fishing traping camping and and my 30years in the U.S. military master gunnery sergeant Richard Stark u .s.m.c. retired
I've been a supporter of your channel for quite some time but the cheap jab at "heroin addicts" was completely unnecessary. I always look forward to your videos and believe you're a genuinely good person. Stick with that because it works for ya.
Ozark trail is basically junk, however, I do like their 9 dollar folding knives. They are pretty sturdy and make a great little throwaway knife. I use them for whittling shelter stakes or small traps from sticks, and general light duty.
I have always said that Ozark Trail is code for cheap, Chinese junk. However, I am a knife collector, and I recently purchased an Ozark Trail folding knife for $5, just to see how bad the junk was. I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised at what I got. Now, would I trade one of my quality knives for the OT? NO WAY! But I was surprised at the quality.
Ozark trail is the absolute low end starter gear you but a kid that is just starting out in camping and survival, as they learn and get older.,as the experience grows then they will appreciate gear that works. They wont like the price.
the difference between the Explorer and the Field Master is the magnifying glass / and saw? I have in my Victorinox, Saw and magnifying glass and according to me it is the Explorer 🤯
Oh yeah, you don't want to be stranded on a desert island without a spoon. What if a can of beans washes up? How will you eat it? I can't believe I never thought of putting a spoon in a survival kit.
5:26 i actually have one of those but its thicker it has 2 more saws and a punch and a small knife some thing simmilar to 9:58 its not that bad but for a swis army collector well... 🙄
I’d buy it and just replace some items with better quality items like a real Swiss Army knife a better fire starter add some kindling para chord a multi tool etc
100% fr? Ozark Trail is killing the outdoor/survival/experience game rn. I'm happy with everything I've picked up back in that section of Walmart over the last couple years.

Great kit!!!
Ozark trail is basically junk, however, I do like their 9 dollar folding knives. They are pretty sturdy and make a great little throwaway knife. I use them for whittling shelter stakes or small traps from sticks, and general light duty.
"So that's not 100% useless"...best review ever. Peace.
Everyone always bashes walmart stuff, but it can get the job done if you treat it right.
they have decent stuff, especially if you're on a tight budget
Those multi dinner utensils are totally impractical, how can you use the knife and fork together...😁
Seems better than. Nothing kit .walmart ustales just them rods
Really helpful , ✌🏽
To be fair adding a real Swiss Army knife would have upped the price by 20 or 30 dollars. Just sayin.. I’m getting one of these
Nice box
"Unless you're a heroine addict" -10/10 comedy
You didn't get it from Walmart so I would question whether there are many more available at that price.
Gary Mathis Yeah, I addressed that at the end of the video.
Got mine from Wal-Mart...
@@davidcarothers3311 for $6?
The latch will break for sure
What are you favorite pre-made kits? I really like the SOL pocket pak plus
That flashlight looks like it has small container above bateries.
Obviously, a kit to give as a birthday present to a child.
Ozark trail is the absolute low end starter gear you but a kid that is just starting out in camping and survival, as they learn and get older.,as the experience grows then they will appreciate gear that works. They wont like the price.
For 6 bucks, it’s actually a decent deal.... minus the knife.
Good video, that music though...
Add water and you have a towel? What I'd you need the towel to dry off with. Won't the towel be qwt?
Back of light is storage
the difference between the Explorer and the Field Master is the magnifying glass / and saw? I have in my Victorinox, Saw and magnifying glass and according to me it is the Explorer 🤯
I have never seen the jelly belly's with caffeine, do they have them in coffee flavor with the caffeine, or grape? Lol!
Would you take 7 back for it...That's not a bad deal 🤔
Oh yeah, you don't want to be stranded on a desert island without a spoon. What if a can of beans washes up? How will you eat it? I can't believe I never thought of putting a spoon in a survival kit.
I tried to unscrew a flathead screw the multi tool and it broke the screw was not that tite.
5:26 i actually have one of those but its thicker it has 2 more saws and a punch and a small knife some thing simmilar to 9:58 its not that bad but for a swis army collector well... 🙄
I would take out the notebook and just put in 2 pages.
what do you have against a big lighter? the candle thing is genius though. and a better flashlight could be smaller and better(olight fanboy)
I’d add a waterproof map of the area u would be camping in just in case phone dies and no gps
For 6 dollars that will get you through a night thats pretty hard to say for similar more expensive competitors
I love Walmart dude
So do I
Wish you had tested that waterproof box.
Yeah
Surprises me how they either have a pencil or waterproof paper. Why have one and not the other.
