Thanks for showing the stroke and technique on a machine similar to mine. Very helpful and informative!

You're so welcome! There are so many machines out there these days, but in the end rowing is rowing and they can all work and help you get to your fitness goals. :)

I can't afford a thousand dollar machine, but am considering getting a water based rowing machine instead of air (as I tend to be adverse to wind). I like the sound of the water and after trying a magnetic and a water based machine the ergonomics seemed better on the water machine, and also allowed my arms to move forward past my feet during the recovery part of the stroke. Would love to see a video with tips on using a water based machine.

Thank you for the suggestion! First off yes, get the machine that works best for you. If you decide you love rowing, you can always upgrade down the road. Secondly, the rowing stroke is the rowing stroke, so our technique tips are generally applicable to any machine. What else was different about the machine you liked besides it being water-based vs. flywheel-based? Do you remember which one it was? I can take a look at it.

@@UCanRow2 i liked that since where the handle and draw cord were attached much forward from my feet I could hold the handle at a better angle so that my trapezius weren't overly tight. In rowers under $400 (my budget) I've only been able to find that ability with water tank rowers.
[I think the one I tried was a Sunny Obsidian, though I'm not attached to that model. The one I've been considering buying is the Echanfit water & mechanical resistance model R49 Plus.]

Got it! One thing to watch out for, regardless of the machine your torso will only swing forward to the equivalent of a 1:00 position on a clock (imagine 12:00 being you sitting straight up). Collapsing forward so your back rounds may feel like it's working your back more, but it's actually inefficient and puts unnecessary load on your back.

I have a a fused left ankle , so I find the foot pads that move are good for my needs.

That's so great! I'm glad to hear you've found a solution. I used to have a student with a fused ankle as well. She left that foot unstrapped and rocked it in the heel cup (on a Concept2). We made it work! - Sarah

Very helpful, thanks. I'm saving for Concept 2 but it'll be awhile for sure. The goal with this machine was to see if I liked rowing and would I use it consistently (without breaking the bank just in case it wasn't for me).

EXACTLY, Kanner! We know that not everyone is all-in at the beginning and that's completely fine! All rowing is good rowing! How's it going so far?

I purchased this machine. Thanks to your excellent video, I knew what to expect in using it. I am enjoying the experience so far. If in the future I decide rowing is something I want to be more involved in, I will move up to a better machine.

That's absolutely perfect! Rowing is rowing, and you've got a great starting point. There are options at all price points, too if you decide later that you'd like to trade up. Keep having fun!
