Lamara Chkonia (born 27 December 1930 in Batumi, Georgian SSR, USSR) is a Soviet and Georgian opera and chamber singer (lyric coloratura soprano), one of the few Soviet female singers to break through the Iron Curtain and receive international recognition. In 1956, Chkonia graduated from the Tbilisi Conservatory and joined the troupe of the Opera and Theatre of Tbilisi for the seasons of 1956-1960 and 1968-1976. In 1960-1968, Chkonia was one of the leading sopranos at the Kyiv Opera and Ballet Theatre. She would also make numerous guest appearances at the Bolshoi Theatre and the Mariinsky Theatre. Her operatic repertoire included roles in Georgian operas by Z. Paliashvili, Iolanta in P. Tchaikovsky's "Iolanta", Cio-Cio-san in G. Puccini's "Madama Butterfly", Rosina in G. Rossini's "The Barber of Seville", Gilda in G. Verdi's "Rigoletto" and more. Chkonia actively toured in the USSR and abroad as a chamber singer, performing сlassical pieces by Russian, Georgian and foreign composers, she was frequently invited to official state and private solo concerts for visiting political figures or cosmonauts. During her career, Chkonia became laureate of many national and international vocal competitions, among which the Glinka Competition in Moscow, the Sofia Competition in Bulgaria, the "Prague Spring" in Czechoslovakia and the Madama Butterfly Competition in Japan. In 1976, Chkonia took up teaching at the Tbilisi Conservatory. In 1996 she moved permanently to Madrid where she conducted master classes for a new generation of talented opera singers. The holder of the honorary title of People's Artist of the USSR (1976) and many other awards. The song "Дорожная" ("On the Road Song"), written by I. Dunaevsky and S. Vasilyev, is performed at a concert in 1977.
