John Bentley is gonna put on one hell of a performance when we meet Dyne. Hopefully the writers don't change that part of the story too much.

Whenever I see John/Barret say, "She's tougher than me," it absolutely BREAKS me.

If you notice, he says that as he puts his glasses on, wich I think is an insane detail hinting that he's hiding tears, so clever and well written. There's a lot of little details like these scatered throughout the game that people don't notice at first. This game is a masterpiece.

I just want to say that Johns interpretation of Barretts voice is exactly how I heard it in my head as a kid. I'm so glad he got the role. You've allowed each layer of the character, from strength, to humor, to emotional depth to truy shine. Thank you.

Seeing how much John cares & how much he understands the FFVII chatacters warms my heart. You can clearly see that he's a FF7 fan.

Really, really great interview with John Bentley. The amount of emotion shown from powerful and subtle movements were exactly how you all explained. Means a lot seeing this brought together from his journey to Barret. Remarkable, thank you!

Barret was legit one of my favorite party members from the original and I am so, so glad he was done justice in the remake.

I've noticed overall they've stuck pretty damn close to classic. Moreover they've only expanded it for the majority. I don't see much conflict with the original the internet insists on so much, in fact it makes me love the original even more not to mention the series overall.

My guess is the voice director wanted to keep Mr.T feel of og7 Barrett because in japanese? Japanese Barrett is an absolute teddy bear in 7Renake, he's loud and gruff with most people but as soon as Marlene enters the scene? Man just melts into the softest most gentle giant you could hear. I have no idea why the voice direction for the localisation didnt follow that but here we are.

After I finished this game a few years ago, I liked Barret a lot more! I like to thank John for his performance of what a strong African-American character should behave like with no stereotypes!:)

Awesome interview. Yeah, Barret really shows how he becomes sort of a dad not just to Marlene, but to Cloud and the girls (Tifa and Aerith) too. Red he treats more like a heckling pet at first, but hopefully we'll see more in Rebirth. I wonder how that dynamic will look once Cid is introduced?

From the first game (original game), i never see berret as a stereotype at all. I truly do think he's a good daddy

Whats the stereotype? Ah yes, the stereotype of a Black father, a good and cool father figure, a leader with funny and serious open mind. Besides, there are stereotype of other characters, like Cloud. Woke people would say, he is a blonde, blue eyed, white, toxic Masculinity, while ignoring toxic Femininity, this one with red dress and blonde, using her good looks to get her way, which honestly goodlooks is womans power.

It's the fact that the original localized script for FF7 for the PS1 is that they used rather... stilted AAVE and the fact they made him act way too much like Mister T... so yeah, what John had said was basically for the better.

@@kc_9970 It was part of his charm. I loved Barret back when I was a teen, just like I loved Mr.T when I was a kid. Stereotypes are not always synoym with racism. Also, every single character was a stereotype or a caricature.

Woke means aware of racial injustice and expanded to mean aware of the socioeconomically oppressed and lgbt+ a little later. The term has been around since 1930 and Ledbelly in the form of the slogan stay woke. Wikipedia search the word "woke" and educate yourself dude.
Toxic masculinity is not about grilling men for being sterotypically or culturally manly. Toxic masculinity is basically how men are conditioned to behave by society in ways that HURT THE MEN. For example: the expectation of never crying when sad in front of people, supressing your emotions. That's toxic. It is unhealthy.
People act like woke is some bad thing. Woke can be boiled down to "socially aware". Stop using it as a pejorative.
Conservatives are saying that left-leaning people want to control their language while at the same time changing the meaning of words I mean Jesus
Also you need to brush up on your english in general.
The stereotype that exists in America is that black fathers are not good dads. That they run out on their kids, they sit around all day drawing welfare money. I hate to have to clarify this is THE RACIST CONSERVATIVE NARRATIVE.
With cloud and aerith you are just making stuff up. Almost nobody looks at those characters and thinks "toxic masculinity/femininity"
You sound like somebody who's been watching a lot of right-wing RUclips content and I will grant you there may be 5 or 10 or 20 or even 200 people talking about toxic masculinity femininity or whatever in regard to these characters but 99.99999999999999% of people do not care about what a few 2016 era "SJWS" have to say and people understand these are fictional charcters. Basically nobody is saying anything the right wing is pretending they are saying. Always an imaginary fight lol "war on masculinity, war on Christmas, war on religion and prayer". Nothing is happening. Relax. It is a video game. The only reason you see hot takes is because people want to clickbait for ad revenue.
      End of story.
