Old school options: So, you want manual steering, a/c and a 304 in cherry red? No problem! Modern options: Well, if you want a/c, youre going to need to get the comfort package, remote start and 20" alloy wheels, oh, and it doesn't come in the colors you want. No, there arent any engine options, but, for $200 you can get these cool floor mats!
LOL! Obsoleted by the JL Wrangler. They all come with a/c, there's five different combinations of engines (3.6L w/o mild hybrid system, 3.6l w/mild hybrid system, 2.0 turbo w/o mild hybrid system, 2.0 turbo w/mild ybrid system, 3.0l turbodiesel), two different transmissions (6 speed Aisin manual or 8 speed ZF automatic), and oh yeah, unfortunately some of those combinations only come on certain model lines and you can't get some engines with the manual. BTW, all of the JL Wrangler engines make more power than the AMC 304. Engine technology has come a long ways since 1970, when the AMC 304 was introduced.

Love it when the guy's hat flies off at 2:58, not so much at 4:15 or so because that roll bar looks awfully close to the driver's head. I think it actually hit it at 4:28.
I just bought a roached out 1963 Willy's CJ5. It sits right next to my 2004 Rubicon in the garage. It doesn't run at the moment, it's ugly as sin, and it's beat to hell, but I love it. Yeah, I know, but these 'safety' standards are what kill people nowadays IMO. People have forgotten how to drive for themselves. The wish for the modern CJ is simply a wish for something smaller, simpler and still more fuel efficient, something that Chrysler is considering nowadays.
@DX721 Well, there are still plenty of jeeps out there that need restoring... and while they have been modernized, there is plenty of heritage and the looks that Jeep has kept. :)

@JSSJeepin Plus, more parts are made for the TJ because it is the off road Jeep, arguably off road vehicle of chose, because it is simple, has one of the best motors jeep has ever made (4.0 liter). The JKs have that 3.6 liter. I have driven one to me they feel under powered. Hey im not trying to bash JKs i really do like them i think they are a sweet rig. Make them as simply as possible and watch them sell... Or is that impossible nowadays?
Yes, I think about the future of the car restoration business often. How many people will ever want to rebuild a 'classic' Toyota Prius or Hyundai Elantra one day?
@JSSJeepin i disagree. The JKs and TJs are both very capable rigs, and yes you do have a point that CJ5s and 7s have leafs, and YJs and XJs leafs in the rear. A leaf wont give as much suspension travel as a coil, but when you lift a TJ or JK with the 4 wheel coils, it shifts the weight weird on rocks. I own a TJ and an XJ and i have done some off roading with some people in a club. There is a CJ5 that keeps right up with us. One person actually wants to put leafs on his TJ. Feels more stable.
It's all about the driver anyway. The Wrangler is supposed to be a dangerous vehicle, but when have you EVER seen one in an "on road" accident? People who own Wranglers aren't looking for speed and handling. They know the limits of thier vehicle. Every top ten list i've seen of deadly vehicle accidents, the Wrangler is never on it.
It's a film for dealers. The voice over refers to the potential buyers of this vehicle. Talking to the sellers from the manufacturers. I bet they played this reel at a car show for dealers?
I think they should put P.T.O. on the front and rear of every jeep . People should drive them and use them as they were designed to be used instead of as toys for rock climbing. Fine if they want to do that but make the jeep once again as an on and off road tool not toy
Impossible nowadays. Federal law requires the electronic stability control, ABS brakes, wheel tire pressure sensors, electronic engine controls, front and rear crush zones, airbags, etc. in the current Jeep Wrangler.
In 1973, over 50,000 people died in traffic accidents, out of a population of around 200 million. Last year roughly 30,000 people died in traffic accidents, out of a population of around 300 million. By all measures current vehicles are far safer than 1973 vehicles. I wish I had that CJ-5 -- but I would add a roll cage/seat harnesses first thing, and trailer it to where I wheeled it offroad.
@cessna40 completely agree. if the jeep corperation wanted to make vehicles that ANYBODY would drive, they need to make them less expensive, a base model jeep should cost no more than 10,000. make all these computer traction control features optional, that kinda stuff. i mean really there is no reason for a jeep to cost 20,000+ for something the driver is likely to beat the hell out of.
This was my very first vehicle. Granted, I bought it in 2001. But how I wish I never sold it. I don't have any of the option here though, air conditioning! Seriously. My Jeep was a simple buggy, no options, with a big ass 304.
@NotoriousJam Hardly. The YJ couldn't even keep up with a stock TJ, let alone a JK. The JK has more suspension travel, more ground clearance, better angles and real traction control which makes it far better than a TJ, which the YJ is leagues behind. While the Wrangler may not be as simple as a toothpick anymore, it will wheel circles around a CJ, and make a YJ and TJ sweat.
Yep. I sorta wish that I could buy a new Jeep without all that stuff that makes it big and bloated. Something small and simple like the old CJ5. But the law is the law. Sigh!

@PeteWaddell X2, more likely nowadays you'd break alot of expensive plastic parts... Too much plastic in the name of safety if you ask me. Bring back a flat metal dash and a design that encourages people to drive slower like the jeep in general and you'd have less fatalities without living in a nanny state.
Jeep may have softened some in 50 years in the effort to appeal to a larger audience, but they are still capable and infinitely customizable. But look at what has become of Land Rover. That company has lost sight of its heritage. At least Jeep still does real testing at Moab and on the Rubicon trail.

Most traffic deaths are caused by drunks and young idiots, and I haven't noticed either of them paying much attention to safety gear (or not). As for a smaller, simpler offroading Jeep, that'd be nice. Unfortunately last time Jeep had something like that, they only sold 15k per year and need to sell at least 60k/year like current 2 door JK to break even.

Bring back a flat metal dash and a design that encourages people to drive slower like the jeep in general and you'd have less fatalities without living in a nanny state.
The two guys in the jeep at the beginning, when they did, the jump, probably ended up with broken backs. One lost his hat.😂
I love that it shows them just driving as the crow flies! Lol before the envyro freaks started closing public lands to jeep use!
@gfr1980 Yep, right there with you! Check out my website listed in my profile/channel for lots more of the jeep!
The original sidexside
Wonder why the new motto is Tread lightly.. lol
@mustangcharger Gotta love those small unscripted things!
Take a look my jeep at cj5 1974 by folgier! See you!
70's commercials were long
Jeep may have softened some in 50 years in the effort to appeal to a larger audience, but they are still capable and infinitely customizable. But look at what has become of Land Rover. That company has lost sight of its heritage.
At least Jeep still does real testing at Moab and on the Rubicon trail.
0:30 is that legal?
@kiopi94 it is if you are in a Jeep!! haha
I always want to drive of the freeway on to embankment.
Especially when there's traffic!
jeeps should be built to bounce of of rocks n trees, not be hit from cars.
Good luck in sourcing the parts and hats off to you for re-using as much as possible. Feel free to try our forum's wanted section if you have the time and we'd love to see your project while you're at it. thisoldjeep.21.forumer.com
