There's a dark humor mini comic by Mizuki Shigeru, 'The Power of Sleep' that I think every artist should read. Can't overstate how important sleep, regular meals, and hydration are. It made me so sad seeing classmates in art school pulling regular all-nighters for their work. If you aren't meeting fundamental basic needs, everything else suffers. Caffeine is really like a credit card too, you pay back the energy you get with interest later. Thanks for the vid Tim!
Amazing video, as a person with adhd drawing was the only constant passions in my life, because I always used doddle in school, but now I struggle to find motivation to keep drawing but this video help me a little , thank you!
Awesome! Yeah that’s a challenge for sure! I think these ideas are critical for tackling that type of situation. It can be difficult to find proper focus time. And often you don’t have a huge amount of it :-)
This is so good. I have a habit of pushing through, and rarely take time for myself. The body knows and stops me if i don't listen. This knowledge that resting is actually more productive and will help me learn, will be a game changer. I took my first rest break and feel super relaxed, for the first time in months. Thanks heaps, your explanations have definitely helped me.
I love this podcast your doing its simple and chill and you've been a massive help in my artistic development I know this may sound dramatic but your one of the main reasons I didn't quit art and actually stuck with it and got better Thank you so much Tim love your work
Your channel is a gold mine of knowledge. I am personally trying to become a professional illustrator myself without college. Glad I found your content.
Incorporating positive emotion is a great point. I try to do this and I find that when I think about the act of drawing, it really is correlated with those positive emotions. Usually when I learn something big or come up with something that I didn't know I had the skill to pull off
I run one 3 hour drawing session / day or 21 hours /week. This includes four 5 min breaks in each session. Im 45 now and only started drawing 2 years ago as a complete begineer. There hasnt been one week where i haven't practiced for 21 hours. My progress has been beyond my expectations.
I found that recording my art process forces me to focus on the art and nothing else. Sometimes I put something on in the background but it’s usually just me and the paper. The thing is that I didn’t realize “why it works” until I watched this video, so thank you!
Really enjoying this type of Podcast Tim, I actually play these while I'm doing my drawing exercises throughout the week and I find it not only calming, but also inspiring! Thanks for putting in the time to make these!
omg, I had the same shock when I went to a 9-to-5 work. It's like, wow, I don't actually have to be "on" and 100% all the time? What??? Oh is that why I've been so stressed? XD
Great podcast Tim. I haven’t heard anyone discuss the topic of artificial studying “aids” for any type of learning/studying video, let alone art videos, so I’m glad you mentioned it. I bet many people wonder how certain people are able to do those 16+ hour days, but of course they don’t mention their secret sauce. IMO, better to stay healthy and learn sustainable study habits than to be dependent on substances that will be less effective over time and potentially dangerous to your health in the long run. (Assuming they actually worked those hours and not just “working.”)
Yeah! This is a real topic for sure. It's interesting not many people seem to discuss it. It seems to be political in some ways. I know for a fact that some people who have done really well at high pressure top art schools pulling all-nighters (or more... days and days at a time) to produce high quality work... were using 'stuff' to stay focused. I'm glad that bit spoke to you. I don't honestly know a lot about it, but thought it was worth mentioning (I come from a more alternative/natural health and wellbeing background... so it just seems crazy to me.) But I know that for a lot of students the pressure to do this to keep up is there. And there is not a lot of counter info on how to be more focused through natural means.
At first I thought ... "wtf .... didn't I subscribe to tim's channel? why am I not subscribe?" ...... then I thought youtube now auto unsubscribe people from other's channel ...... until I realize later this is a different channel ...... ya got my blood boiling there for a sec ....
Sounds like a recommendation, as long as one does it intentionally! Thanks for sharing 😊. I am trying to sketch daily, for the purpose of making it a habit.
Jesus loves you. ❤ He gave you purpose and gifts. A mind to reason and the ability to love. Continue teaching you’re doing good, learned a lot form you so far.

Going the healthy route for learning art for me
I'm a stay at home dad of two that's only a couple months into attempting to 'get gud' at art.
This idea of energy management is huge for me.

So should one draw daily or not? 🤔
Haha… well, I do :)
But probably not if you are just grinding away at it is the point.
