Clear and interesting explanations. Thanks!! Just visited the Seaport exhibit in Philadelphia with USS Becuna. Very similar to Torsk, but with a much blunter bow shape. The USN submarine force was and remains the best in the world.

Someday, I'll come see that ship. My grandfather served on 424 and 525, but neither one of them are around anymore. Not sure how Torsk varied from Quillback.

What emits the distinct smell aboard the submarine? Is it the wires, the insulation on the wires, or the steel from which the submarine is made? Or something else?
    Thanks.

They use something called amine which is used to remove CO from the air. Admittedly I am not sure if they began using it ast this time or the start of the submarine service or later. I am also unsure if it would linger to this day on a sub as old as Torsk. It also has tons of other smells in a confined space which are not all pretty like diesel and lubricant oils and such.

Is this the ship that was used as a movie set?

the guide when at the hydraulic manifold never mentioned its most important thing..to open the vents so the air escapes, and the tanks fill with water, and the boat dives..also never mentioned that in the after port corner of control is the radio room

LMFAO i died reading this. I toured the boat as part of an all-navy group and my chief said if he ever sees me walk down a ladder well facing the steps he would....well you get the picture

She is a BOAT, not a ship.
