    New rider here.
I can do figure 8s on my bike within 4 parking spaces, but I've been doing it without touching the clutch much at all.
Once i get going, the bike motors along without need of much, if any, throttle and no clutch work to speak, so at quite a slow pace.
Im not sure that's a good or bad thing thing, its just how things are going so ???
I've ridden bicycles (mountain bikes primarily) at a fairly high level and practiced bike control ad nauseam, so it translated over. Counter weighting is essentially the same in both disciplines using slow speed.
Still though, I feel I need to improve my use of the clutch more since i nerd out on improving whatever I'm into.

Man, you would do great on a DCT then, lol. I’ve had one for a year and I’m still struggling in slow tight u-turns. I think you do whatever works best for you. It doesn’t have to be any one certain way for doing it.
I like the trophy winning motorcycle cop that Motojitsu has been promoting lately, he actually uses the front brake to tip into his turns. I think if you’re not using your clutch you are using more speed to your advantage (or else you would be stalling out), just as this gentlemen is which allows him to use the front brake with out stalling out and crashing.

  • @fredthorp6741

Spot on. It also helped me to slide my butt to the outside of the turn, especially on surfaces with questionable traction. And I practiced on a bicycle while getting my license and bike, which helped a bunch.

I noticed this the other day. I brought my bike out to do a winter inspection and was riding it around my driveway, I hated feeling like the bike was going to fall and I reflexively went for the brake. Thats what NOT to do!
The laws of physics make it harder for the bike to fall when youre leaned at a faster speed, but that effect doesnt feel so obvious when youre at a slower speed.

I think learning to do this with just the clutch and throttle like you suggested in other videos (and not the rear brake) made a really big difference for me. Using the rear brake feels like a crutch this point...I don't sweat doing any u-turns b/c of that clutch control.

Great video! I’m the 1% that has a DCT. What Greg said when introducing the technique of applying constant throttle and controlling speed with the clutch, made sense when he said it takes some skill to do that while negotiating the handle bars.
With the DCT this is the technique I have to use when slow speed maneuvering, but using the rear brake since there is no clutch to slip. He suggests using this technique as you progress. I learned “preloading” and using the rear brake from “Be the Boss of your Motorcycle” channel early on in teaching myself slow riding technique on my first motorcycle, which was a 250cc standard dual sport, and it made a world of difference in my command of the bike.
Now with this new DCT (2023 Honda NC750X) I have a problem with throttle control getting choppy as hell, if I happen to let off too much either too much on the throttle or off too much on the rear brake, unlike the smoothness of just giving and taking with slipping a clutch.
My point is I think my throttle control issues I’m having is not being cognizant enough of the bar angles as I’m turning. It’s so much harder for me to feather that rear brake than it is slipping a clutch which is also likely being affected by my shifting of weight with the bike.

Been on scooters for many years. Used a tw 200 in msf class in 2012. Recently bought Trk 502. Picked up shifting slow control right away. Some shifts still a little slow methodical and rough. Screw up 4th to 5th shift sometimes, but actually heard may be s thing w this bike. U turns on scooter used to do in my driveway and when i get to work turning around in couple spaces. Had a Zero S for previous sesson before this last one. Struggled real hard on u turns it pissed me off. Something always felt a bit off w front end of that one so traded for the Trk. Glad other than paying for gas. Everything slightly overszed for my liking. May mot be a keeper. On toes, levers closest can be or on 2nd notch 550 pounds. Probably should move my shift lever up one notch. Had lots problems rear brake locking up. I took out the pads ran front brake only for couple weeks until changed caliper and pads. Finally got a wheel stand, but aleady felt like brake was locked up and dragging when tried to test spinning tire 😡. Cleaned and lubed chain, rode a couple hundred miles before put away. Should i lube again when season starts or just wait couple hundred more miles?

Hey greg! The biggest challenge I often face is the start. In India, often, there's someone blowing a traffic light or coming from the opposite side of the road. And some of the u turns are super tight. Personally, the initial bit, going from a standstill to the full lean while keeping a steady drive becomes a little tricky while also looking out for people out to kill you 😅 I try and practice this every morning but have yet to find a controlled environment (like these massive parking lots) where I can experiment and learn freely.

You will also feel that your body has to create counterweight on opposite side to sty in ballance to draw very tide circle.
