After realizing the 20th anniversary was coming up, I've been waiting to start the game until today Sep. 24th. I plan on playing the entire game in the dark at night, alone in my apartment.... it's a cathartic story for me... I was tearing up at the end... it's such a mix of horror with beautiful yet melancholic soothing music at times, and a few soul crushing moments... sadness and horror... what a combination...
This game still has special place in my heart. 20 years ago this game and its music changed me. I will never be the same. I still dream about it almost every day despite I play it once a year or maybe less.
I am so glad that fandom isn't dead, for a few years I've thought it disappeared along with the franchise. Even if P.T. never came out, looks like it brought Silent Hill back from limbo

If Team Silent watched this, I believe they would be proud that the game still receive so much love 20 years later. Like you said, Silent Hill 2 is truly a fantastic horror game. The character is an everyman like the players (unlike trained combatants in Resident Evil), the story is relatable for audience identification (self-forgiveness, repressed guilt, loneliness, etc.) and the atmosphere feels like real world (gritty, repulsive, never too much blood unlike The Evil Within). This game is truly ahead of its time.
I've played this game many times to get all of the endings and to explore the entire town (and also for speedruns). And i like it very much. While it's not a perfect game in the gameplay aspect, it's narrative and story are superior over most of the other horror games, even 20 years later in 2021. This bug at 34:50 min is caused by the fact, that the game relies on a single cpu core only. You see the port released back in 2002, when PCs still had only one cpu core (multicore cpus came up in 2005 by intel first). To fix this issue, you need to set the game into single core affinity mode. Than it runs well. Your review is great.

i love resident evil soundtracks, save room themes especially are awesome, but silent hill 2 has the best soundtracks in the entire survival horror genre and its not even close, akira yamaoka is brilliant.

I know when a games release isn’t up to the creators but what good timing for the US release since it came out a few days after 9/11. For gamers, that game came out during a hard and scary time for them. And SH2 probably helped ease that stress and distract them for a few hours.

Its all based in or near a neighborhood/suburb of the town called South Vale. The fact this is considered one of the best installments of the franchise is all kinds of irony I can't begin to process.
Silent Hill is made up of 4 main areas: Old Silent Hill, Central Silent Hill, Docks Area (where the Hotel and the Amusement Park are (sh1 and sh3)) and South Vale, where SH2 takes place.
Well not none exactly. That said, a heavier Western influence makes sense for Silent Hill in particular. SH is a series that takes place in rural American environments, not Japanese ones. It only makes sense that if you're developing a game that takes place in a different country than your own, you'd do research on that country. Inspirations and references could've easily been a result of doing said research. Either that or the team was just really into Western works before SH, who knows?

Silent Hill 1-3 are the only games that I know of that has a Trip-Hop inspired soundtrack. Being a dead genre they might be the last ones.
