    Remember… it’s called the music BUSINESS for a reason. I’ve dialed it back quite a bit, especially buying multiple copies of stuff I already own. The curse of the COLLECTORS is real…..and they know this, all too well.🎶✌️

      I have a new rule I set for myself. I only purchase physical copies of my favourite albums and bands. Everything else now I just stream. I save money and space, and don't plunk money down on something I'll only listen to once or twice. I sold off some music recently I haven't listened to for years, and happy for the downsize.

    I haven't bought too many box sets, myself. I think the last one I got was a Christmas gift, and that was Bruce Springsteen's "Tracks," which is a really nice collection. I've got a four or five disc Motown one which assembles all those old hits into one collection, and it was cheap, so that was well worth the money. There are a few more collections I have bought over the years like that one. For me, being a working musician, I spend more money on my "tools" that I need for my job. This past year I bought an old Takamine guitar, to replace my longtime one that was stolen, and that was $450, and then I started looking around for "spares" for my various pedals that I use, as I am always afraid of them getting damaged by rain and moisture when playing my many outdoor gigs, so I got a spare TC Helicon Harmonizer pedal for $350, and a spare Marshall Supervibe stereo chorus pedal, the first model, which I tracked down in the Netherlands, for $150, since my original one that I use for my live gigs now has a bit of an odd "chirping" sound to it, due to water damage, and isn't suitable for doing recordings. So in the end, I guess it's all a matter of priorities. My son is like you guys. He will spend a lot of money on a rare book, but he is a collector.

      I love boxsets like Bruce Springsteen’s Tracks. A boxset of all unreleased studio songs. There are so few bands that have this much back catalogue of recorded material who can do this. There are a couple of ways to look at it, I myself will usually wait until someone else will buy it and do a review or unboxing on RUclips. I did this when David Coverdale of White snake announced they were doing anniversary box sets of the groups albums, that way I get to see what's in the set I wanted and then decided if it was worth the price or not. I plan on doing this again when Black Sabbath does this for the Born Again box set when it becomes available to the public.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  3 года назад

      That’s a good logic. I just can’t wait that long. I need these things when they come out so I do my homework in advance. As for a Born Again boxset, I think that’s highly unlikely. The album just wasn’t successful enough to warrant a boxset. If they aren’t even releasing all of the Ozzy era albums as boxsets I don’t think we will see some of the lesser known titles. But hey I hope it happens because I really like the album a lot.

    Hi Brendon!! this is an interesting topic, back in the day when boxsets started to appear it was the best way to get some rare stuff like live show or performances and demos or b sides like Maiden's "Eddies Archive", Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", nowadays this kind of "product" is the latest thing the industry have to still make some money from the catalogue they own. To me i don't how many times i have heard the alternative takes, demos, mixes of the original album are worth the money and yes the retail price is the main issue..... cheers and be well

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  3 года назад

      Yeah it’s interesting as the boxset used to be a celebration and a rarity among releases. Now it’s becoming the standard or norm and it’s no long the special thing it once was. On top of that they’re flooding the market. Like most things the industry will burn itself out on boxsets and kill them too.

    I think the reason for these box sets is the fact that you can't sell just the music anymore, because one can just listen to it through RUclips or Spotify etc. So the record companies have to sell the "stuff" that is extra.

    • @BrendonSnyder

    Excellent video, guys! I enjoy box sets but they have to be put together thoughtfully for me to buy them. I really like seeing live material in box sets such as the deluxe or super deluxe album boxes but If you're going to include 4 unreleased live shows on 4 discs and all of them are almost identical set lists I'm not going to hand over $100+ for that box set. That's like getting one live show and the other 3 are thrown in just to justify the cost. That's the very definition of a cash grab to me. I think you can often tell when a box set was carefully thought out and put together in a smart way that would give fans something to really enjoy vs. when it's just a complete money grab.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  3 года назад

      Mel, I feel the same way! I don’t know duplicate live shows that have the same setlist. It drives me nuts when bands duplicate songs and versions of songs in these deluxe editions. If they do they need to keep them to separate discs. I hate when they put 3 versions of the same song in a row. For me I can’t listen to a disc that has repeated songs unless it’s thought about like the first and last one repeats.

    I'm all about the music and just the music. I love rarities. In particular, I love unreleased studio tracks. I'm not big on outtakes or live material. A lot of sets are coming out tiered - just the album, deluxe set, and super deluxe.
    Imo, there is just way too much disparity between deluxe and super deluxe sets. I'd love to see an added tier for those who want all the music without all the trinkets.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  3 года назад

      I’d love to see that as well. Unfortunately the reason the trinkets are there is so they can charge more. If they remove it they are removing money they can make. So it’s unlikely we will see the music only edition. Probably also because streaming is already the music only edition.

    The Jethro Tull box sets are the ones that I do buy and are the standard against which I base my judgement on whether or not to get a set - remixed album, unreleased good sounding live show, DVD/BluRay of a live show if possible, unrleased additional songs that are every bit as good - and sometimes better - than the songs on the album but were lef off for whatever reason.
    As for cost, I nearly didnt buy Black Sabbath's Technical Ecstasy set, despite it being my favourite Sabbath album, as initially it was advertised at twice the price I eventually paid for it - and then I had to import it from the US into the UK.However I'm glad I did as the remix and live (albeit form an bootleg I already own) and the alternative takes make it worthwhile - the remastered album was a bit unneccesary however it keeps it all in one nice package wioth a nice book - even though it didnt incude any notes from Steven Wilson regarding the remixing.
    The sets that I get totally annoyed with are those where they have a number of unreleased live recordings that I would like to get, but at the same time include all the already released albums - I'm thinking Wishbone Ash, ELP, Gentle Giant and now Judas Priest - especally where the albums in the Priest set dont even have the bonus tracks that were on the previous remasters. Those sets are both way beyond my price point and in all cases I've already shelled out for the albums , in some cases two or three times - original vinyl LP, CD when first released and then Remaster with some bonus tracks and then maybe another remaster with more bonus tracks. Yes I could resell the CDs I've already purchased but they'll not get a good price and I object to having to do so. In all the above bands' cases , had they just released the live CDs in the sets at half the box set price I would have bought them. And I would think any long standing fan of those or any band for that matter, will already have bought most if not all the offcial releases at least once - therefore to me those sets are purely cash grabs.
    Sets like the Kiss one where there are works in progress are great if you are a big fan of the band - but if you are an inbetween big and casual fan then maybe not such great value.
    Yes did a great set on Rhino called The World is Live where they released three CDs of unreleased live bootleg recordings, tidied up a bit. Same thing when ELP did their Bootleg Box set - in both cases I did have some of the boots included, however it was good to have them in an official package. Most of the Priest live sets in their box have also been available as bootlegs for a while - along with many others - but I still would buy an official release of them because I'm a fan of the band - but not when the set is stuffed full of stuff I already have and at an extortionate price.

    What I find strange is there are a few bands who have already made more money than they can spend who create boxed sets with exorbitant prices. I also bought the Kiss Destroyer box and I do enjoy it and the non musical content, but I believe this should have been $100 and not $200. Like you, I am also a huge Pink Floyd fanatic and I shelled out for those as well, but those were way overpriced too. With The Later Years, they have continued to milk the fans by releasing Delicate Sound of Thunder, Knebworth, and A Momentary Lapse of Reason Remix. The Early Years should have been $300 and The Later Years should have been maybe $200. Other bands are doing superb bang for the buck. The Jethro Tull anniversary book boxes are roughly $35-$45 dollars for an average of 3-4 CDs and 2 DVDs with a book in the middle LOADED with information, history, etc. I have enjoyed the Sabbath Deluxe CD boxes and the Whitesnake ones are great too. I think the Metallica boxes are great content for the price too. I do think the black album box should have been a little lower in price like the previous ones were. Like you guys say, we’re fans. We may snarl and grumble about some of the boxes and prices, but we will follow our fandom - we pick our battles. Like you, I considered the big Tattoo You box, but the extra money for the live CDs is not worth it. Frank Zappa’s family has been doing great boxed sets for the price. I picked up The Hot Rats Sessions 6CD for under $100 and it is super high quality. Sometimes the non music bonus content is baffling and I am thinking specifically of the Pink Floyd Immersion sets with scarves, marbles, and other useless throwaway stuff. Another really great set recently is the Thin Lizzy 6CD set with all the lyrics, tour books, etc.

    Yes you have to pick and choose carefully, it's a cash cow for many bands, I think Motley Crue are the worst, yet they know the fans will pay for the same shit and a little extra . The best is if you want to discover an artist from scratch then it's often a good way 👍

    Boxsets give you a good view of what a band is ready to do for the fans : Metallica, for exemple, put out a huge amount of stuff for the Black Album anniversary, and it was "only" 200 euros or so. On the other hand, you have to pay the same price for the MODE box by Depeche Mode, with nothing really new on it, just the albums and the b-sides. My guess is : "content" is when a band really cares about what is released ; "cash grab" is when the label runs everything. Too bad for me, I'm a Depeche Mode fan 😁

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  3 года назад +1

      The Depeche Mode boxset had 4 CD’s on non-albums and unreleased tracks! Plus it included their entire studio catalogue. That’s a lot more than Metallica is doing on single album releases. While I agree the Metallica boxes are value packed, you’re comparing apples to oranges with these two types. I’ve done a full review of the Depeche Mode boxset which I got for $350 if you want to know more about it, see link ruclips.net/video/tinzmefZrWI/видео.html

      @@BrendonSnyder I understand what you mean, a whole catalog can't be compared with a single album. But as a fan, I would have loved it if DM had released live stuff, demo stuff like Metallica did. A lot of DM fans complained about it, and it's the same thing for the upcoming 101 reissue. Okay, it's a bluray, but you have only 3 unreleased performances. I don't know, maybe Metallica fans are also disappointed... However, I'm still glad to have bought the MODE box, it became so rare so quickly !

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  3 года назад +1

      I haven’t bought any of the Metallica boxsets yet because so much material is duplicated. While there is value in the 10+ discs in each box, I don’t need multiple live concerts and multiple demo recordings that duplicate songs so that I end up with 6 live version of a song and 6 demos of the same song. Plus for me I have zero interest in hearing an interview disc. Maybe because I lived through it already but it would have been more interesting for them to film a new interview about their memories and include it. While I know Metallica doesn’t have unreleased recordings to include because they only record exactly what they write, still it’s disappointing to not get any outtakes or new material. So I’ve just purchased the 3 CD set versions. I think it’s all in the eye of the beholder. What doesn’t work for me works for someone else and visa versa.

      My intake of bootlegs is very limited. First the quality of both the material and packing has to be very high quality. Second, the music has to not be available from the band. If the band has their own out I’d rather buy that one over a bootleg.
