CB450 Shift shaft fix

Your CB450 not shifting right because the shift shaft retaining snap ring won't stay in its groove? This is how you can fix it.

I put a couple of washers on the spindle between the gear change and the cover casting, minimum side play.

The problem is that the snap ring groove on the shifter shaft is not very deep and the snap ring will pop out of the groove and cause shifting problems. I have seen this happen on a lot of 450s. This solution works well even if the bike falls over on the shifter side.
