Thanks for letting me know what to do. I just got my first one this year and wasn't sure what to do when winter gets close here in mid Missouri. It's doing great. Most of the outdoor plants here do very well because the high humidity that makes it so hot and miserable for me, does wonders for most of my plants. Thanks , again!!
Great information, this is my first attempt to plant these in my front yard, they have grown above my roof, now it's October and I didn't know what to do. Thanks so much!
+John Lord good luck with yours :) it's a lot of fun to get in there and rip and tear... I just hate the emptiness left behind... i'm looking forward to the spring again.
+PlantzNThings Well you don't necessarily have to rip it out. I have a stepped hot house/grow room attached to south face of house (of course super big, to fit against "the mansion") and I have year round banana, papaya, mango, pineapple, fig, and don't have to do the rip and tear. Just pruning and trimming to keep them in check. Someone's latest YT vid (just plastic hot house, outside 50s, inside 100. Easy peasy. And if you have some of the dwarf bananas (
You make it look easy. It takes a lot of ambition to winter non-hardy plants every year. That knife was either really sharp or the leaves were as soft as they looked.

You often mentioned that you think you're lazy when it comes to watering...I think I am laziER, Bill. :-) Thank goodness, I don't have any issues with snow or many of the plants that I do have will freeze!

I'm southern Maine zone 5b / 6a pocket do you have any videos on elephant ears mine are called mammoth ears that' s all I know but they are huge for starting from a bulb 12 weeks ago. Thanks for this awesome video.
hi, how is your banana tree doing? are you going to post an update or a new video? I wonder what will happen when the root grows too big and it becomes very heavy to dig out and store. it will be real sad to let it die for that reason. I saw a video from someone else and the tree was so heavy that it was almost impossible to dig out. I love your videos :) thanks
Mine is approximately that size. I don't really have a nice lighted place in the house for the Winter. I wonder if I could dig it up and just store the plant unpotted in a cool dry place until Spring?
I find that they grow better in the ground... but if you have a massive pot it shouldn't matter... if the roots are too constricted the plant slows down...
Hi great video. I have one of these plants and I live in the UK so the temperature is probably cooler than where you are! I've had my plant for a couple of years and then this year I heard you could put it outside. It has done really well. The temperature outside especially in the evening is starting to get quite a bit cooler 10° - 7°. I am going to do what you just said and I will definitely not water it in storage. What kind of soil do you use for the storage. I don't have a basement but I have a garage that has some light. It can get quite cold in there indoors but guess the temperature can reach 3 degrees do you think I should find somewhere warmer? Thanks
Such a beautiful plant, I love the colors! Any chance of doing a beginner's guide to getting started with tropicals later on? I'm hoping to try growing a few tropical plants next year but I'm unsure how to start and the best sites to buy, etc.
Hi, thanks for your video on wintering the banana. I am also bringing in our banana for the winter. I am wondering if or when I could divide off some of the off shooting stems from the central root? Is that something I could do now and plant separately ? The banana I have has some well developed offshoots but I don't want to damage the main plant. Any advice would. be appreciated. My plant appears to be the same genus as yours. Thank you.
I haven’t thought to dig them up, why not just protecting them with fleece or other things? I honestly would not have thought that its that easy. What do you recommend is the better method living in the UK?
I'm in zone 6b... I think you're much warmer and might not have to do much at all... winters here can get severe with occasional temps getting down into the -30's C.
Hi......Is your basement heated? I am bringing in 3 different varieties that did not do well at all this summer. All were small due to a cool Spring/Summer season. My basement is not heated but they will not freeze. Can I put them there or should I keep them growing in the house? Thanks!!
Hi Bill, is that a sucker on the side of your Banana plant? I just brought mine in for the winter.....it grew to about 8 feet this summer so I had to put it in a storage tote....I thought Ensetes didn't put out pups?
is this the red banana ornamental? I have 3 of these, and the base on these have been turning a yellow color. Do you think this is a mineral deficiency? or possibly over watering?
Hello, I had a question. .I live in Texas so I was thinking about purchasing one so I wanted to know when could I keep this type of banana plant in a pot or would it be better off in the ground and also..and if it is better to put in ground, when do you think I should take out or will it be okay and survive the winter? Thank you. ..
These plants grow better in the ground... but a Large pot works good too... I find that they grow a little slower in a pot... dig them up when the temps start dipping below 50F .... not sure when that will happen in your area... when the temps drop the growth slows... and below 50F it will start getting black spots.
I'm a Texan, and--last winter being the exception--there are LOTS of people who over-winter them in the ground. Cut the leaves off (as in this video), wrap it in a layer of burlap, then wrap Christmas lights around the trunk, followed by a layer of insulation. They successfully survive the winter in ground this way. I have a friend north of Salt Lake City who has huge palm trees in his yard that manages to overwinter them successfully up there in the land of ice and snow by the same method.
as long as it doesn't freeze it might be ok... that's something I want to experiment with myself. tropical bananas tend to show signs of cold damage when the temps go below 10c or 50f ... usually my garage stays above 5c... it would be interesting
While their in the basement do they need water and sunlight ? When u bring them back outside they grow fine? What happens to all those leftover cuts on the stem where the leaves used to be . Thanks !
I give might light but I have friend that give them no light... if there is no light... make sure that you don't water. Because the plant will not be photosynthesizing it wont require much moisture. when I have mine in the grow space I really decrease the watering to when the soil is Completely dry... too much water and you risk having them rot. I hope this answered your question
The short plant on the other side of the banana pot....is that a geranium? It's gorgeous. Does it come back every year? If so, do you know what variety it is? Loved the video.
I have one about 12ft tall, its in my basement propped up by a chair, my ceilings in the basement are only 7ft its also not in a pot, should I cut it so I can sit upright and pot it ?
Would this work planted in a large pot and sunk in the ground each summer then just lifted for the winter? I don't know about you but I am fair worn out from bringing in all the plants that were outside for the summer and spraying and cleaning each one so anything that would save you some labor would be worth a try, eh?
+Jackie Binkley you can plant them in pots and sink them into the ground for sure... it isn't much easier to pull up... the roots really grow through the bottom.
Hi Bill, This is the first year I dont need to buy new bananas. I dug 3 of them out last fall and i have just replanted them back outside. My question, I have one that is about 5ft tall I cut all of the side leafs off last fall. Since I cut them off I am guessing about 4 ft high or so will be nothing but a stalk ? Should I cut the plant down maybe to 2 feet or so so it will look better?? If so, Should I wait until it gets growing good ? Thanks
+ToddLB4567 great question... and you're right... that will be bare stock... this is a personal interest thing... if you want height don't cut it back... eventually it will sucker and will fill in the space if it's a musa...
