i was legit having this conversation with a friend about how having "to do" lists... we never actually refer to them again and instead just that act of writing it down helps keep it in our brains
What a great reminder of the importance of taking the time to reflect and write, and the unique value of handwriting as a means of expression and cognitive engagement. Thanks for sharing this message with us.
Thank you, Katie, for highlighting the numerous benefits of writing by hand. It's amazing to think that something as simple as picking up a pen can enhance our brain function and improve our cognitive skills. Your talk has inspired me to prioritize handwriting and enjoy its therapeutic effects. Truly eye-opening!
I can't believe this showed up in my suggestions. 6 months ago I started to make it a point to take short breaks during the day to write by hand, and it has been a huge help in my focus and flow for the day.
I never thought of writing by hand as a way to synthesize my thoughts better, but it makes sense. It's like a form of active engagement with our ideas.

This talk beautifully captures the essence of mindfulness in writing by hand. In our fast-paced world, it's a call to slow down, focus, and find meaning in the act of writing. The speaker's words are a gentle reminder to nurture this practice in our lives.
I'm a teacher, and after hearing your talk, I'm seriously considering incorporating more handwriting exercises into my classroom. It's not just about academics; it's about fostering creativity and self-expression.
Take it a step further and teach them how to journal by hand. Writing while thinking, is much like trying to solve a math problem with pen and paper, than just all mentally in your head. Writing sharpens your thoughts, improves eloquence, and teaches people to think more and think for themselves rather than just thinking whatever Tiktok tell them.
Wonderful! I work for a non-profit for kids here in Asia and I’m thinking of including writing classes and journalling in the kids’ time at the study center😀Thanks for sharing!
THANK YOU! i get NOSTALGIC when i see people writing by hand and it breaks my heart when I think deeper into that. Dear Katie here has given me a little bit of hope though!
I appreciate the reminder that writing by hand can foster better retention and understanding of information. It's a valuable tool for learning and personal growth.
Katie McCleary's talk highlights the mindfulness and intentionality that arise from the act of writing by hand. It's a beautiful practice that allows us to slow down and engage with our thoughts on a deeper level. 😃
I couldn't agree more with Katie McCleary's insights. There's something magical about the connection between hand and brain that enhances our creativity and focus when we write by hand.
Writing by hand is slow and messy, but the Katie made me appreciate its beauty. It's like creating your own font and leaving a piece of yourself on the page.
Wow! We've been taught that computers help us get our ideas out faster, but who knew it was actually hindering our real creativity?!? Amazing talk. Thank you, Katie!
Katie, your talk is a great reminder that technology should complement our lives, not dominate them. I'm going to make a conscious effort to balance screen time with handwritten moments.
The idea that writing whatever bubbles up can be transformative is so powerful. It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle and bustle of life, and writing whatever comes to mind is a great way to reflect on what's truly important and work through any problems or emotions that may be holding us back. I'm excited to see how this practice can transform my own life.
Yeah I guess if it's coming to mind during the time you've set aside to write about your day well that's a pretty strong indication that it really is important.
Katie, your talk made me nostalgic for the days when I used to write in a physical diary. There's something magical about the tactile experience of pen and paper that I miss. Thanks for the reminder!
I normally take digital notes in all my classes, I've never even considered that handwriting might help me remember things better! So intrigued to try now
Whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed by a decision I sit down with my favourite pen and make a loooong list. Writing it all down immediately makes things clear for me.
Writing is my life! With all the thoughts that roam around in my head, if it wasn't for pen to hand and the written word they would die inside me. Or I would die inside. Thank you for being the inspiration you are.
I've literally never heard of thought worms before! I also didn't know how much our brains had to process in a day. Knowing that it seems really obvious how writing down what's important would help us immensely.
Katie, I never thought about the environmental impact of digital devices versus handwriting. Your talk has me thinking about how I can reduce my tech usage and embrace eco-friendly practices.
This talk is a great reminder that while technology is incredibly useful, there's a value in reconnecting with analog practices like handwriting. Balancing the digital and analog worlds can lead to a more mindful and fulfilling life.
Absolutely... I love journaling and consider it a form of self-care and while I wouldn't feel anywhere near that if I was doing it digitally, I'm not about to start handwriting letters to all my friends as a way of keeping in touch. It's important to recognize what should be used for what.
I keep a journal to record the events of every day [like Oprah does] and I'm fascinated how my handwriting reflects my mood. Big and flowery or small and cramped.
I can attest to the magic of handwriting. There's a certain connection between the mind, hand, and paper that enhances creativity and self-expression. It's a beautiful feeling to see your thoughts come alive in your own unique handwriting, and it adds a personal touch to the words.

It allows for a more intimate and personal connection with our thoughts and emotions. It's reassuring to know that despite the digital age, some traditions continue to hold value!! Great share with everyone Viv, I love it
I never thought my handwriting could be so meaningful. Katie's story about Derek and his emotional experience really got me thinking about the power of writing.
I'm definitely guilty of relying too much on digital devices for writing. This talk reminded me of the value of going back to pen and paper, and I'm grateful for it.
I was for a bit there too but I also found the technology available to be inspiring and actually lead me back to hand writing in my favourite notebook.
The story about Derek and the red spatula is so touching. It reminds us that there's a lot more to our personal histories than we may realize. The thought of handwriting being able to unlock that is really exciting!
The examples of the diverse range of people that the speaker has written with, from prisoners to NBA players, was inspiring. It's a testament to the universality of the power of writing and the human experience.
Your talk has sparked a curiosity in me about calligraphy. I want to explore the art of beautiful handwriting and see how it can elevate the way I express myself.
I have to admit, I was skeptical at first, but now I'm convinced that my handwriting is a work of art, even if it looks like a toddler's doodles. Thanks for boosting my confidence!
I appreciate the emphasis on handwriting as a means of filtering out the noise and focusing on what truly matters. We need more of that in today's fast paced, technology driven world.
Absolutely agree with what she says around the 8:25 mark. That feeling of total connection when your hand is just gliding across the page and you're barely even thinking about the words is so magnificent and empowering
Flow state is powerful! It’s a full body integration experience and that’s one powerful reason why handwriting works to deliver our best thoughts! Thanks for this comment.
The idea that it filters and deepens thoughts through a slower process is something I hadn't considered before. Especially in the fast paced world we live in. I will be exploring this further!
The power of handwriting goes beyond the page; it reaches into our hearts and minds, connecting us with our past and guiding us toward a more meaningful future.
As an elementary school teacher, I've seen the power of journaling in my students. It helps them express themselves and improves their writing skills in a way that doesn't feel work
I'm super intrigued about how handwriting can look so different from person to person... and how some people in the same family have similar handwriting. It's really cool and yes, more than a little bit magical.
As an artist, I appreciate your emphasis on handwriting as a creative outlet. It's like a form of art in itself, and it can be therapeutic to express oneself through the strokes of a pen.
Katie, outstanding talk - I will listen again. Loved the story and the real life application. I met your dad at a business meeting and this topic came up - so glad he shared this with me. No one should be a boiled frog!
I'm a DIY enthusiast, so the concept of handwriting being like crafting words really speaks to me. Just like how crafting is an intentional, creative process, so is handwriting, and this talk is a beautiful love letter to the importance of artistry and mindfulness.
That's awesome! I often think of my journal as a work of art, it gives me the some warm feelings as crafting does but I'd never thought about how similar they actually are in terms of artistry and mindfulness!
Katie, your talk is a powerful reminder that sometimes the most profound insights come when we let go of judgment and just let our thoughts flow onto the page.
This talk makes some really good points about why this is important but my life is so busy, finding the time to just sit and write would be really difficult
Your talk continues to echo in my spirit and caused me to get out my composition notebooks. You connected with me and I so appreciate your heart behind the words that became your talk. Well done, Katie. You rock!! (P.S. Michelle just started helping me put my words down with prompts for a reflective book on my journey. Any help is appreciated!!)
If I have a lot of things to say to someone I write them all down in a letter to them. I've done it since I was a teenager and had my first huge falling out with a best friend, I wrote down all the ways they hurt me and all the things they had misunderstood about what I had done... it really helped me make sense of everything I was feeling and just sort of track it all. I rarely send those letters lol but just writing it down does help immensely.
I've always enjoyed writing, but I never thought about the cognitive differences between handwriting and typing! It's fascinating and honestly super validating 😅
The use of writing prompts to encourage natural writing is something I've used in my own writing practice, and it's great to see someone else using this technique as well. Writing prompts are a great way to get the creative juices flowing and push past writer's block.
As someone who struggles to stay focused in today's constantly noisy world, I found this talk on a simple practice to improve thinking and focus extremely intriguing. The idea of improving my cognitive processes through handwriting was something I had never considered before, and I'm definitely excited to try it out myself
It goes along well with things like journaling too. really good way to make ourselves process things that we might not otherwise due to constant stimulation
I really appreciate the emphasis on the creative process and letting go of the fear of judgment when writing. This is something that can be applied not just to journaling, but to any form of creative expression.
It's such an indescribably wonderful feeling, when your hand is flying across the page and you can see your thoughts take shape through how your writing looks🥰🥰🥰
There are experts around the globe whose job it is to authenticate handwriting, particularly when someone is selling an autograph or letters and I always thought it would be such an interesting job. Also to be able to tell a lot about a person just based on their writing would be very interesting
As a writer, I've always valued the act of handwriting. It's not just about the words, but the connection between thoughts and the page. This talk beautifully captures the essence of that feeling.
Loved your message, Katie. I have personally experienced the benefits of writing by hand, and I often to teach it to others. Now I can refer them to this video! Well done!
As a reformed stationery addict... I feel it creeping back in... And for valid reasons too. Connecting dots in my life and realising giving up my fondness for stationery is around the time my brain felt like it was slowing down. Go figure.
Thank you for sharing this interesting presentation on the power of journaling and handwriting. It's amazing to see the impact that writing can have on our lives and our cognitive processes.
This is really beautiful Katie and I think part of it is reaching that flow state, when your pen is on the paper and your hand is moving so quickly you aren't even thinking about it... it's just such an indescribable feeling and it makes me sad to think people aren't experiencing it so much anymore
Writing by hand literally creates a flow directly from your brain into something tangible, in a way that just isn't the same with a keyboard
Definitely agree, it's good for just getting it all out there
it is the same as with keyboard
i was legit having this conversation with a friend about how having "to do" lists... we never actually refer to them again and instead just that act of writing it down helps keep it in our brains
Yes!
Great insight.

I can see the connection between writing by hand and deeper thinking. It's a deliberate and intentional act, makes sense that it would help with that
what is shallow thinking?

It has taken me many years to be able to master remembering to write things down and now that I have it is so helpful in many ways.
I love the way she put it at the 4:46 mark, and I love how passionate she clearly is about this.

Writing by hand is slow and messy, but the Katie made me appreciate its beauty. It's like creating your own font and leaving a piece of yourself on the page.
This is a great way to look at it. Also in most the exercises she talks about it seems going slow would be an advantage!
I actually love the idea of creating your own font via handwriting. Nice.
Sometimes it's nice to be slow and messy and you're right I think a certain beauty does emerge from it
I love her shirt, I love her tatts, but most of all, I love her thought process
Her look definitely lured me in 😍and now I want a new journal...and pen...
She has a very warmth and knowledgeable vibe about her. And a great take.

Decades ago I enrolled in a calligraphy course, kinda like handwriting on steroids and I loved it. You've inspired me to revisit that, thank you.
Oh, yes! Calligraphy is so beautiful, wish I had the patience for it.
My brother once got me a super fancy quill and ink but I never did anything with it...

I've never considered that a thought dies when it isn't expressed, thanks for this.

Thank you Jason! It’s such a simple practice with huge benefits.

Love this, love how hand writing makes me feel. Have a feeling it is a lost art form.
I'm convinced, I need to start writing by hand ASAP.
I'm loving what Katie does getting all different people to have fun, write and create. Thanks for showing us your world.

I'm definitely guilty of relying too much on digital devices for writing. This talk reminded me of the value of going back to pen and paper, and I'm grateful for it.
Very easy to rely on technology, it's more and more accessible. Can't help but wonder what the state of my childrens handwriting will be 😂

I have to admit, I was skeptical at first, but now I'm convinced that my handwriting is a work of art, even if it looks like a toddler's doodles. Thanks for boosting my confidence!

The idea of integrating our whole selves into the act of writing is intriguing. It's like bringing our mind, body, and soul together in harmony.
It's not only a mindfulness practice but one that brings such clarity!!
I agree!!! Handwriting has a personal touch that typing can't replicate. It adds a special meaning to our words.
Yes a special meaning and also just a nice feeling!

The idea that it filters and deepens thoughts through a slower process is something I hadn't considered before. Especially in the fast paced world we live in. I will be exploring this further!
I really liked this explanation of it too. I guess the time it takes to write is longer than the time it takes to think so it makes sense!
The power of handwriting goes beyond the page; it reaches into our hearts and minds, connecting us with our past and guiding us toward a more meaningful future.
As an elementary school teacher, I've seen the power of journaling in my students. It helps them express themselves and improves their writing skills in a way that doesn't feel work
I found my diaries from kindergarten the other day and my writing was terrible, but my imagination was on point!
When i face trials in life i write my thoughts n whatever is inside with a pen it helps it is real thank you
I'm super intrigued about how handwriting can look so different from person to person... and how some people in the same family have similar handwriting. It's really cool and yes, more than a little bit magical.
Definitely. My mother and my sister have very similar handwriting
Integrating our whole selves through handwriting makes sense. It's a holistic approach to processing thoughts.
What exactly do you mean by "integrating our whole selves" ??
I'm not sure about the "integrating our whole selves" part either but it's an interesting way of seeing what's really happening in our thoughts
I use to write every day just after my breakfast... I really love to do this. It works like therapy ❣
😍😍
As an artist, I appreciate your emphasis on handwriting as a creative outlet. It's like a form of art in itself, and it can be therapeutic to express oneself through the strokes of a pen.

Writing prompts are a great way to get the creative juices flowing and push past writer's block.
completely agree with you.
Yeah it's a really cool idea!
Same! I've been doing light journaling for a little while but I'm excited to see what happens once I give this a proper go
There are handwriting experts who earn big money authenticating people's handwriting. Everyone's is unique.
❤I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THIS THIS.
THANK YOU!
I used to underestimate the power of handwriting, but now I see it as a mindful practice that brings clarity and intention to my writing.
I never thought about the cognitive process behind handwriting. It's fascinating how it engages different parts of the brain.
Is there any hard evidence of this?
I really appreciate the emphasis on the creative process and letting go of the fear of judgment when writing. This is something that can be applied not just to journaling, but to any form of creative expression.
This is a really cool take on it all, I struggle so much with the 'fear of judgement' during any creative process...
yeah she has a great way of explaining this stuff
Definitely! I think journaling is making a huge comeback.
It's such an indescribably wonderful feeling, when your hand is flying across the page and you can see your thoughts take shape through how your writing looks🥰🥰🥰
Love this Laura! Write on!
That is a great feeling. I've only experienced it a couple of times but hoping the more I take Katie's advice the more I'll get to experience it
There are experts around the globe whose job it is to authenticate handwriting, particularly when someone is selling an autograph or letters and I always thought it would be such an interesting job. Also to be able to tell a lot about a person just based on their writing would be very interesting
Katie you are an incredible human with a gift to speak and inspire! Wow this was awesome 😎👍
❤ thank you!
Oh this is such a nice comment!
As a writer, I've always valued the act of handwriting. It's not just about the words, but the connection between thoughts and the page. This talk beautifully captures the essence of that feeling.
I love it as well, it really helps me find my center!
This was one of my favorite talks! As a technology teacher, I could not agree more!! Thank you for sharing with TEDxEustis!
Thank you- there is always room for both.
Loved your message, Katie. I have personally experienced the benefits of writing by hand, and I often to teach it to others. Now I can refer them to this video! Well done!
Thank you Michelle!
Thank you Katie! We need to be reminding our grade school children of these facts to help future generations as everything is so digital now!!
Definitely, I feel like some of them would never even touch a pen
Writing by hand has really improved my ability to focus amidst a noisy world.
It's so important to slow down once in a while!
That's awesome! What kind of stuff are you writing?
This is so encouraging to hear
As a reformed stationery addict... I feel it creeping back in... And for valid reasons too. Connecting dots in my life and realising giving up my fondness for stationery is around the time my brain felt like it was slowing down. Go figure.
omg me tooo!!but its totally okay because ITS A GOOD THING! she has totally reignited that fire in my belly!!
It's interesting how our habits can affect our mental pace. Stationery definitely has its charm!
Your realization about stationery's impact on your mental agility is quite perceptive.
It's fascinating how stationery can symbolize mental engagement and clarity for you.
Your personal journey with stationery offers a fresh perspective on cognitive well-being.
I remember the days when handwriting was the norm. There's something special about seeing your own unique handwriting on paper
not mine :p
Thank you for sharing this interesting presentation on the power of journaling and handwriting. It's amazing to see the impact that writing can have on our lives and our cognitive processes.
This is a true way to start creativity.
Yeah I found it really cool too!
I agree that there's a loss when we rely solely on digital communication. Handwritten notes have a personal touch.
Very true!
I've been journaling for years, and it really does help me clear my mind and focus on what's important. Highly recommend!
It's a great practice I try to recommend to all my friends!
What an amazing talk, and yes I have pen and paper ready. This talk IS WORTH SHARING🤗😘🤗
and I got it, very cool, Now write! lol
Hahaha love it!
This is really beautiful Katie and I think part of it is reaching that flow state, when your pen is on the paper and your hand is moving so quickly you aren't even thinking about it... it's just such an indescribable feeling and it makes me sad to think people aren't experiencing it so much anymore
Thank you Damien! I love being in the flow state- losing time in revelry of joy and meaning- precious!
I feel this way about making music! All for that flow state
I've been writing by hand lately because of this talk and it has made all the difference. You rock!
