I agree. I love this tempo for the Matthäus-Passion, I think it fits much better than the slower versions. Many poeple will disagree, I know - it is a personal feeling 😊

The beautiful video production enables us to the beautiful expressivity of Michael Chance in delicious detail. Perhaps future generations will hear this and that humans of the 20th century were not completely lost.
Emma Kirkby is good here but not as good as she was in her thirties, when she had the voice of an angel. More vibrato here. But yeah, Chance is a great countertenor. And don't overlook David Thomas and Michael George, who did a fine job as well.

Anyway, that’s how I feel hearing their singing. Even Kirkby seems a bit wooden singing next to Chance. But still magnificent to be able to be present for this historic performance. Miraculous, really.

The first part, the one with kids choral, is the greatest music ever created by human. Chaconne comes second and symphony 9 ( the first three movements only ) comes third. These three pieces are above masterpieces. They are from heaven without being touched by mortal souls

Some people complain about the tempos here but for get to take into consideration that Cleobury has to accommodate the resonant acoustics of Kings. Great performance and who cannot be moved by the all male choir plus the wonderful voices of Chance and Kirby at their height.
I heard David Thomas's interpretation of "Mache Dich" and wanted the rest. Don't know this oratorio but I will have to hear the whole thing! Great to find the full upload of this performance. Thomas, Kirkby, George and Chance are all great singers and I think this will be a treat!
@@LindaPgh I would have to say it's much more accurate than Thomas's rendition. But his voice is more textured and not as smooth as in this interpretation. The middle part was the best for Thomas's version, the part a was a little muddier. He ended it very nicely though.
I saw Michael Chance AND Emma Kirkby in recital in Boston in the early 2000s and the voices are SPECTACULAR in person as well. A really good Passion! I think artists are allowed a little more musicality with Bach these days. There is something a bit sterile (albeit still beautiful) about the new early music movement days of the 80s and 90s. I can't put my finger on it. It's like the tiniest bit of rubato was not okay...I get it. But I'm glad we're a little looser nowadays. Still a beautiful, moving performance of my favorite piece :)

After viewing the magnificent performance of this monumental oratorio by the Tölzer Knabenchor, I couldn't imagine a better performance. So I agree with you Wolfgang.
It would be nice to specify timecodes for numbers ... And in the browser, the numbers of the chapters from the Bible look like timecodes ... Can you use another character instead of a colon?
Bach searched for God's music when he wrote. He regarded himself as a scientist, searching to discover the laws of the musical universe rather than an artist.

But think of the awesome, moving interpretation of "Am Abend ..." or "Mache dich, meine Herze, rein" or of the last choral "Ach Herr", for example. To my mind, these parts in the performance of 1958 with DiFiDi are outstanding.
Not bad for its time. Herreweghe and Gardiner do better jobs though (to be expected - these are children; well-trained, talented children, but children nevertheless. Cleobury also just moves through it like clock work. One loses the context - a trial and crucifixion. The lack of articulation also makes it sound like one choir; not two. The antiphonal conversation between the choirs is entirely lost here. Pretty singing, but not memorable. This reminds us why Gardiner broke away from this aesthetic to found the Monteverdi Choir - to breath real character and authenticity into performances in lieu of "pretty singing". Chance and George are lovely though...
Craig Bloomfield Yes to the clockwise manner, something that I tax Bernstein's Beethoven Symphonies for in the lighter passages. He just beats the time. Same story here. But the singing is beautiful & sweet. And it does dance abit, a la Gardiner.
I don't know enough about the piece, but I agree that the boy choir is important. A boy soprano section is a prettier sound than women. Also, what happened to Thomas, Kirkby and Covey-Crump, who did outstanding jobs alongside Chance and George?
antiphonal singing is best acheived by distancing the two groups so the sound of each group comes from a different place. you can only get this from a live performance
Why does he have to rush through the final chorus? "We sit down with tears and call to you in the grave: rest gently, gently rest! Rest, you exhausted limbs! - Rest gently, rest well. -" Does that need to be sung so quickly? Come on, Mr. Conductor, slow down and put some feeling into it!

Emma Kirkby, not at her most outstanding (her best was when she was in her thirties) but still beautiful, the great countertenor Michael Chance, the energetic David Thomas, an excellent Rogers Covey-Crump as the Evangelist, and a rich, magical performance of Michael George as Jesus. Martyn Hill doesn't really deserve any great praise, he was fine but not especially exceptional which is why I do not list him.
If you guys wanna get a taste of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Matthew Passion", listen to Otto Klemperer or Karl Richter! This performance form Cambridge is horrible. This is not a dance. Not a waltz. Gruesome. I stopped after 2 minutes. I can't stand it!

Listening during the 12-3 hour on Good Friday. So thankful for beautiful music and performers such as this!

I love the tempos myself. They are hardly far off the norm, anyway.

I totally agree! That version from 1958 will never be beaten. Richter himself never reached this level again.
Richter was genius. Too bad all of his smoking and stress ended his life so early. But thankfully we have recordings!

the boy choir is essential. Bach composed this for boys voices not women voices.
