Timp de 300 de ani, între 1572 si 1867, Biertanul a fost sediul episcopatului sasesc, aceasta favorizând construirea uneia dintre cele mai puternice cetati taranesti din Transilvania, în jurul bisericii fortificate. Astazi, aceasta veche asezare saseasca este cunoscuta în lume datorita bisericii-cetate, inclusa în 1993 pe lista monumentelor patrimoniului mondial a UNESCO."

➤Biertan fortified church is part of the first German settlements in Transylvania. The first mention of its name dates from 1283. Completed by 1510 - 1516, the church is located in the middle of fortifications built to resist the Turkish invasion of the XVth century. For 300 years, between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the head of the Saxon episcopate, favoring the construction of one of the strongest peasant fortresses in Transylvania, around the fortified church. Today, this ancient Saxon settlement known in the world because of the church-fortress was included in 1993 on the list of UNESCO World Heritage monuments.
