I really appreciate this modification (don't see why others are so negative about it) - it really does improve the carrying comfort of this useful product. Your instructions were clear and easy to follow. My modified Day Pack was extremely useful during a recent 2 month Trans-Pyrenees hike through France and Spain: food shopping, rain gear on day walks, hand luggage in aircraft, etc. Always kept it to hand in the top pocket of my backpack.
SuperVerkade I'm working on a follow up video to this mod that may better explain why I did this. Some people just may not understand. Thanks for watching.
Great mod, may think about doing this to mine, although I'm not quite certain yet I want to give up the ability to stuff it back in its sack. Thank you for a clear and concise video!
I did a different mod for mine. I attached Velcro to the backpack straps and then used some padded strapping from an old sling from when I broke my arm. It really works well and since it is attached by Velcro, you can remove the padded strap when you don't want if.
I probably would have used some repair kit tape on the fabric before sewing some over it, to avoid long term durability issues that may arise if the cut works it's way to the edge of the straps.... but this mod is awesome dude. nobody buys those packs with comfort in mind, but I can definitely see myself doing this same mod to stop bunching!
Great idea. If you were to make the cut at the bottom end of the strap it would maintain the original strength at the top end. At the bottom end you could cut the strap so the bottom edge of the foam will sit in a pocket of the original strap.Hemming the cut would make the foam removable so you could keep it in its pouch.
Nice job. I have the dry bag version of this pack and had the same idea. Some thoughts: make the slit vertically along the strap rather than across it and it will not degrade the strap strength much at all. You can leave the slit open and finish the edges with heat or seam sealer, and be able to remove the foam as needed. I am going to use some high grade perforated light foam from Mountain Laurel Designs etc. Also going to add a micro chest strap from zing-it cord, a line lock and mitten hook.
Great job. Had an idea though. Instead, take a rectangle of the foam and cut a hole to stick your head through. this serves as shoulder pads under the pack so the straps don't dig in. It doubles as a bag padding down your back so pack items don't poke into your back
I've been thinking about this video for over two years. A really smart useful mod. Great overview of ultra light day bags. I wouldn't have considered such a lightweight day bag, but I bought a Montbell, a little heavier fabric, but not much. Use it several times a week in the past two years. It's been up more than a few mountains. I always think about doing your mod to the straps, but they're a bit wider. I also joined the gear sewing circle, it's so much fun not having to rely on just commercially made gear. If it's great, cool, I'll buy it. If not, I make my own. Thanks
Instead of cutting the fabric, I would have opened a few cm of the side seams, inserted the foam and sewn the seam back together. No hole, no extra ripstop fabric. :)
I like your modification. Since you had the extra nylon you could alsomake the tiny stuff sack bigger. I saw a different mod on a tiny pack like this where they added nylon webbing sewn along the shoulder strap. Then further they made a loop where they could clipon a waterbottle and that helped to counter balance weight from the pack. You did a great job on yours! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks. Going out to buy myself one of these packs right now! Got me thinking though, as an alternative, maybe some sort of slide-on foam sleeves might be easier and more versatile. Then you could still fold the pack into its stuff sack, and if the foam just covered the shoulders, might be a fraction lighter.
Cool mod 👍 To my mind though you don’t buy this pack for day hiking,it’s basically an ‘emergency’ pack you can have on you at all times for say a bit of shopping or putting a jumper in when out for a walk for a couple of hours. It’s not designed to replace a normal daypack. Not a criticism, just an observation so people choose the right pack 👍
Cool that it works for you. I really like this bag because it fits into that tiny pouch. I don't think it was designed to be a day bag, but this mod helps.
I have one of the same. Def not what I would recommend as a day pack. I am sure the mod helps, but it defeats the purpose of the design. Its a great video you made for people who are looking for a day pack that only have this to work with.
If you just want to keep the strap from bunching, the foam only needs to be at the top of the strap As for the patch, if you put the patch on the inside instead of the outside before you sew it, it will be less... patchy looking while still giving you the structural integrity. Or... you could have just used a satin stitch to close the slit. If you don't want to sew...There's also the super glue patch for ripstop. For this, you'd tape the slit closed from the inside, then put super glue across the slit, and put another piece of scotch tape on top of the super glue. After the super glue cures, you remove the tape, and the glue holds it all together. In this case, you'd have to leave the tape on the inside since you can't get to it, but normally you'd remove all the tape and just leave the glue patch. Cyanoacrylate cures to leave acrylic plastic. Super glue patch is a tidy way to repair smallish rips in ripstop. It's only good for clean straight tears, but your slit should work.
Nice mod man ! Another thing you could do is to cut a little foam fitted to the back of the backpack so that the stuff in side dosent poke you so much. and you can use that foam as a sitt pad when you taking a rest.
Great job. I love these packs and also have the waterproof version. I don't find the straps a problem unless I carry a lot of weight, and I love how they fold up small in their own bag, so instead of permanently modifying them I bought two seat belt covers from Daiso for a couple of dollars, or you can get them on ebay. Mine weigh an ounce each, but have velco so I can take them on and off. That way I get the best of both worlds.
Very cool mod! I'd see this as a hike pack you could put inside a heavy 'camp pack' and after setting up tent, camp, etc....you could wave goodbye for a few hours to your larger pack and take a nice hike around lake or woods or take to the fishing hole.
I don't quite see the point of modding an Ultra-Sil to be used as you do in the video, but the mod makes perfect sense if you intend carrying it in a large rucksack, set up camp and then! switch to the Ultra-Sil. As a commuter cyclist, they are also perfect for keeping in the rackpack to give you additional carrying capacity if you decide to go food shopping on the way home. They are also superb for carrying food and water on a day out and then folding away and clipping to a trouser belt-loop on the journey home, where a larger daypack would still need to be on your back even when empty.
Could you have used a tent repair kit on the straps after you cut and installed the foam? I was thinking about cutting bicycle inter tubes and putting them in leaving the stems out and the valve internals. Heat seal the ends and just blow them up by mouth and install the caps. Later after letting the air out maybe it would fit back in the stuff sack. I buy one and give it a try. This is great thanks for the inspiration and review.
You know I didn't even think of that. Good idea. I think I would use the foam pads all the time because even with five pounds in the pack the straps bunch up. I've been using this bag as a dedicated day pack for my EDC Survival pack and water bottle. But I might pick up another one and if I do I'll be modifying it as well. And I'll try your suggestion. Thanks for watching.
Just starting to get my stuff together and due to physical limitations I need lighter things so thanks for the idea! I think I'd like to make one a permanent modification as you did, and one temporary (just carry the foam inserts in the perm bag) so I can still keep the pack in its little stuff sack. Not sure, still exploring possibilities. Thanks for posting! acwinoh
+tino tesu Haha! True to a point. In the woods I like to blend in as much as I can. But other items I have are bright red or neon green. Mostly because thats the only color choices.
Nice mod... Seems like if the hole were lower with a heavy-duty Velcro closure, you could use the inserts as needed... The back could still collapse into the pouch and the inserts would slip into a suitcase pocket pretty easily when hiking in far off lands...
Really nice mod! I've never seen this packable pack, I have a Marmot one I've been using for years, and it's not quiet so small as this one you have. I do really like sea to summit gear though.
The purpose of this pack is to be packable and lightweight. After your modifications the pack just falls in a different category. You could have bought a bit heavier pack with all the modifications you have done...
If you wanted to be able to put it back in the stuffsack, could you just leave the hole you cut open so you could remove the foam? Love all your videos by the way!
Good on you mate! You solved your own problem and had some fun doing it, what else is there? I muck around on sewing machines for my camping gear too. Regards from Peter (Melbourne , Australia)
Don't wish to sound like a troll but you have just defeated the Hole point of this pack and that is that it is as light as possible And as small as possible you have made it heavier and tripled it's Size.I don't think it is designed to carry 8 pounds it is probably Designed for light wight water proofs hat gloves and a light snack Water maybe 500L tops
I purchased this pack for the sole purpose of using it as a day pack. Small enough so that I don't bring extra junk and light enough to not really notice it. The padding only added .3 oz but made it 10 times more comfortable. Without the padding this pack gets annoying real quick. I loaded the pack more just to test it and I only take about 5 lbs. with me while hiking. This pack hangs in the closet ready to go minus water.
I have one and have found most of the time I'm resting my hands on the sides of my chest with my thumb under the strap flatining it out. I carry way too much weight in it and it's fine. Kinda cool mod although it defeats the purpose of the bag.
It doesn't fit back into the stuff sack once I inserted the foam into the straps. If I needed to store it I pack in all but the straps then wrap the stapes around the pack. It's about three times the size packed up but I only use it as a day pack.
I know this is an old video but what bug net is that? Hammock or head? If it is for the hammock is it a half or full net? I would love to find a hammock bug net that packs down that small! Nice review. Thanks.
Hey great video👍 I'm a first time viewer. What stove was that you packed in the beginning of the video? That's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks buddy
Thank you for the great idea. I'll link your video and I will use your picture. write your name when I write about it I will delete it if you feel uncomfortable. Thanks
10 pounds in a pack that small sounds like it'd be uncomfortable. Just by looking at it anyway. I'd wager that modification is a necessity in that case 😅

Wtf.. This is a backpack? Why would anyone want a backpack that shrinks in size, i'd rather have a pack that's small, but is built out of strong enough material, padding and support. Who cares if the pack shrinks down with nothing in it to fit on your shelf or in your pocket. Foolish purchase i'd say, in all honesty (Sorry I probably sound like an ass) I don't understand the logic.
If you look at the previous comments I explain the my use for this backpack. It suits my needs for what I use it for. I have five other packs for other needs.
the idea is that if you've hiked in a larger pack, dropped it and set up camp, you can use this small one for day excursions from your base camp carrying minimal supplies and without the bulk of a mostly empty huge camping pack.

It's a fully electric powered thread injector! Not a sewing machine!
Instead of cutting the fabric, I would have opened a few cm of the side seams, inserted the foam and sewn the seam back together. No hole, no extra ripstop fabric. :)

You must love green. All your items are green.
+tino tesu Haha! True to a point. In the woods I like to blend in as much as I can. But other items I have are bright red or neon green. Mostly because thats the only color choices.
I might be being thick, but haven't you just made a foldable backpack unfoldable?
Not necessarily. It still compresses down fairly small and then I use a rubber band for the straps. It still fits in my hand.
EasternMountainHiker The selling point of this pack for me is that it folds into a trouser pocket. Be interested to see how your Mods effect this.
Morpheus_00 affect*
It still packs down small enough to fit in a cargo pant pocket.
Nice mod... Seems like if the hole were lower with a heavy-duty Velcro closure, you could use the inserts as needed... The back could still collapse into the pouch and the inserts would slip into a suitcase pocket pretty easily when hiking in far off lands...
Great mod my friend!!...in my opinion.. everyone should know how to use an automatic variable speed thread injector!..handy as hell!
Cheers 👣
Thanks!
Thanks. That one might take me a while but I will give it a try.
Thanks glad you liked it.
That was awesome!
deepbeing Thanks
I might try this type of thing with my handbags.

Good idea guy99a, I might do that to mine, maybe using some sugru
Nice video. I would like to be able to add foam inserts to my Exped Cloudburst 25, but it wouldn't be possible.
great tip, thanks,
It still packs down small. If I carry it in another pack I put a rubber band around it. Thanks for watching.
Good!!! thanks

If you're happy with it then that's all that matters thanks for the reply be lucky now
I agree.
David Pollock packing it is one thing, using it is another. No point if it’s uncomfortable to use.
better this than a 4lb "daypack", that weighs more than everything you are carrying for the day. lol.
I have one and have found most of the time I'm resting my hands on the sides of my chest with my thumb under the strap flatining it out. I carry way too much weight in it and it's fine. Kinda cool mod although it defeats the purpose of the bag.

Hey man. Could you do a video on how to pack the foamed up one back in the tiny sack? Thanks man!
It doesn't fit back into the stuff sack once I inserted the foam into the straps. If I needed to store it I pack in all but the straps then wrap the stapes around the pack. It's about three times the size packed up but I only use it as a day pack.
Nice video. Like the channel as well. New Subscriber!
Thanks.
I know this is an old video but what bug net is that? Hammock or head? If it is for the hammock is it a half or full net? I would love to find a hammock bug net that packs down that small! Nice review. Thanks.
It's a Sea to Summit head bug net. Check this out for a hammock option. ruclips.net/video/-ukdv-Dndic/видео.html
Hello, I was wondering if you could modify my tent, I live in San Diego county. I want a zipper put in so I can access the vent from inside..
Amo esse saquinho
Hey great video👍 I'm a first time viewer. What stove was that you packed in the beginning of the video? That's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks buddy
It's the Vargo titanium wood stove. Here is a video. ruclips.net/video/uUE_d4lw6w4/видео.html
Wow
Velcro would work without having to cut it.
Great stuff and he can use a sowing machine. Ladies you watching.
Another good idea about adding velcro. And I'm already taken ladies.
Thanks for watching.
WoW, your pillow is the size of most bugnets and the bugnet is the size of my pillow.
Jasper Janssen yeah! i wanna know what bug net he is using!
Jasper Janssen oh nvm, he said in another comment that it is Jay a Sea To Summit HEAD bug net... :/
What kind of bug net is that? I've been looking for a compact ultra-light bug net
Sea to summit.
Anyone know the max weight you should put into these bags?
What Mosquito net is that?
Thank you for the great idea. I'll link your video and I will use your picture.
write your name when I write about it
I will delete it if you feel uncomfortable. Thanks
10 pounds in a pack that small sounds like it'd be uncomfortable. Just by looking at it anyway. I'd wager that modification is a necessity in that case 😅
Is your bag stil foldable (with the modification), or do you have to take the foam out before folding?
+Ultramarinus247 Yes it's still compacts very small (with the foam inserts), just not as small as before.
Sorry, I written down (and send) my question sooner, than the video concluded and you actually shown in there. Thank you for answer.
But this defeats the major advantage this unit has and that is the packability and small size. I use mine clipped to my car keys so when I go to the supermarket I am never without a bag as I refuse to pay for bags until they stop using thee excuse no free bags is to help the environment. The day they say it is to increase profits I will pay for bags. Of course I'm not carrying much or for very long, just to the car so I get why you want to improve the straps.
That's one mean machine
This is only needed if you are changing the intended purpose of the pack. Maybe add a way to connect other items to it?
That’s a joke.
Not sure if I'd regard the straps as poor as its very design is to pack into a tiny ball, this infers that it's the name "day pack" that they got wrong, it's more an emergency storage option that you leave in a glove box or under a motorcycle seat. I'd have a lightweight but more substantial bag with waist and chest straps that take more weight and transfer it properly across my body and not just on my shoulders. They cost about the same but don't screw into a tiny ball, a function your bag sadly no longer has.
+Ian smith Ahh yes this video has caused much controversy on my choice to modify this little pack. I has served it's intended modified purpose well.
Why didn't you just use tenacious tape rather than sew additional material onto it?
Olivia Isaac I wanted it permanent. No need to reapply tape or have sticky glue residue left over.
EasternMountainHiker The new repair tapes are permanent.
Is it a bug net for the hammock
+Sepp Pearson Head bug net.
What is the name of your bug net
+Sepp Pearson Sea to Summit.

I use mine as an emergency pack. Putting packing in the straps kinda defeats the purpose to me.
Ver du you get dat
Amazon.com
Where do they sell this ??
I got it from Amazon but l'm sure that you could get one from REI or EMS.
so....it doesnt fit back into the cute little bag......sigh
i would have made duct tape padding wouldn't have to cut it
Just buy Osprey instead.
is it 20l
c cork Yes 1220 cu in / 20 L
daypackception...
swear to gawd i got wet when he started sewing !!
Dude, you don't sew? Every serious outdoorsman knows how to sew. All part of being competent and self reliant.
Or, you could just buy a real daypack.
you're carrying too much... not in volume but in weight.
Wtf.. This is a backpack? Why would anyone want a backpack that shrinks in size, i'd rather have a pack that's small, but is built out of strong enough material, padding and support. Who cares if the pack shrinks down with nothing in it to fit on your shelf or in your pocket.
