OMG, just OMG... The funny thing is that I am planning on building a version of the Ticonderoga as she was in the late 50s for my father. My luck is such that he served on her just after a major refit to support jets, but just before she went in for another refit to incorporate an angled flight deck. I am also going to have to splice a hurricane bow and change the superstructure. Frightening, just frightening. I'm going to have to continue to skill up for the attempt...
Hello David, there is a large amount of Oerlikon Cannons and a vast amount of time putting them together in photo etch. Recently I purchased resin copies, 2 x sets of 1/350 Oerlikon Cannon Set from Ben at Mid West Model shop for my enterprise build. They will save me heaps of time. Very good detail and way good enough for 1/350 scale. Just a thought
I will probably start with the brass and PE Oerlikons and see how it goes. Somehow taking heaps of time on the minutiae of building a ship model doesn't bother me too much. If I can't get a reasonable Oerlikon out of the kit I will switch to resin. There will be something similar to that in the HMS Hood build soon.
Excellent presentation. I think this build (except of all the AA guns) will be a pleasure once started. All the components for the hangar deck and the bow and stern details will provide quite an enjoyable build. Is there an equivalent presentation for the Alabama project?
I am quite optimistic about the build, the kits look good. I just lack familiarity with aircraft carriers so it is not apparent to me how it all goes together. This is the kit review for USS Alabama: ruclips.net/video/FnAhaH0mveM/видео.html
@@DavidsShips a good approach would be if you separate the build into parts (like a BB build): first the hull up to the hangar deck, then the hangar deck, the planes that will be placed inside the hangar and the flight deck that closes the hangar, then the superstructure and last the aircraft on the deck
I love pontos photo etch. I would also recommend very fire and infini model for photo etch if you ever work with kits that they offer PE sets for. I have quite a few kits to get through but I suspect I might build along with you if I decide to do a CV by the time you get to this.
Completely agree. Essex carriers had 100+ planes. One can find the composition of the airwing at the time of the build and set about doing most if all of the planes. Another interesting detail would be the spare airframes lifted to the hangar overhead. The overhead was not a uniform height and the planes had to be secured between trusses and pipes. Approximately 10-15 planes could be stored. There must be some really nice 3D rendered replacement aircraft.
It was about time I bought a CV model. I hadn't thought about upgrading the aircraft, it is something to consider. I suppose replacing them at a later stage won't be a problem. One would expect aircraft to be easy to remove from the carrier...
Those blue colored wooden decks look great, no need to worry about the laser-scorching like on light teak decks.
Well this is exciting to see this new build…..B
Awesome review David ! Thank you 👍🏻😎
My pleasure!

Nice! It is good to know that that you have close connection to the ship. Good luck with your build!

Will be building the Franklin cv13. Been storage for some time but will parallel your work. Have other projects to keep me busy.
Have fun! It will be good to have you along for an Essex class build.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have never built kits from either of those manufacturers.
Moving to aircraft carriera eh?? Hard to resist😅
Have you thought about upgrading the aircrafts to something better made?

I have an uneasy feeling that the hangar is going to be... complicated.
@@DavidsShips yes. I suggest the aircrafts of the kit in the hangar, the aftermarket ones on the deck
