and the funny thing? the reason said CEO isn't CEO at EA anymore is because he was *too greedy.* yes. the CEO of EA that was fired for being TOO GREEDY
I feel your pain. I'm not switching engines just yet, but I'm definitely looking at other engines and keeping tabs on the efforts to port existing Unity content into other engines.
Apparently Applovian unity’s competitor just lunched a project to help streamline porting game projects away from unity engine. The project supposed to remove the need to recode an entire project in a new engine by hand.
Glad you took some time to get your thoughts together and make this video. Keep up the great work man. We'll be watching and supporting regardless of what you do next year.
It's hard to believe there was anyone out there that could think up this policy, present it to other people, have it go through all the layers of corporate and legal channels, and enough of these people thought "There is nothing that will go wrong with this policy" to get it approved.
From what I've heard, very few people at Unity actually thought that there was nothing wrong with the policy and the idiot executives that came up with it just rammed it through anyways.
Hey, man. I'm one of the new Unity refugees, but I'm glad to see some people sticking with it (my project was pretty early so I didn't lose much). I'm especially glad to see you ain't stopping developing this MMZ fan game. I can't wait to get my hands on a build! Love what you do, keep it up, cheers!
I agree with you about supporting people no matter what engine they use but I think there's GREAT risk in developers making public statements that are not very clear cut at this point... not only for the unity situation but for potential future similar actions even if you intend to potentially stick with unity i think it's important to get it out there that this type of behavior cannot and will not be tolerated
I literally downloaded unity 2 weeks ago because I saw these videos that you made, and almost immediately i had to uninstall it because of this new policy. In any case, I do love these zero dev logs and I'm looking forward to them in the future
If I recall, there are some project-sharing sites that can limit the number of times a file is downloaded, which would (at least in theory) help limit the number of installs, particularly for a free game/proof-of-concept. With what's going on with Unity, I completely understand and agree if you don't plan on releasing a project like this to the public, but that is an option if the situation doesn't get better.
I was afraid you gonna have to start over because of them, glad to see you are continuing the zero project without any hiccups, it would've been sad to see it go but yeah, Unity's dumb decisions were uncalled for
I love your work especially on this Zero project, im sad to hear about this situation with unity and i hope things will still work well with you Also z knuckle mechanic sneak peek?!
Ever since that decision, Unity's stock has been in freefall, going down 15% in the last month. classic case of chasing short-term money, damn the consequences.
dude the progress on this game is outstanding.. it's been awesome to watch this project improve w every video. Unity sucks and I hope the situation settles itself out, but thank you for what you do!
@@HYDEinallcaps They created a new open game license (I forget what ogl actually stands for, but that sound right,) that iirc said that anyone who created dnd-themed additions to the game would have to pay WotC a majority of the revenue from the project, and the project would then be "protected" by WotC, which usually means they would own it.

Ooh yeah Bro! I was wondering what your thoughts are on this matter as well...crazy $#!+ unity is doing but I'm not surprised...people close to the source gave hints(in all industries not just gaming) that what was free or cheap yesterday will cost more in the future -and here we are. This is a heavy blow for me I invested a lot of time and resources into creating with unity3d so this hits hard and has me thinking about a future without unity3d😞...and how my favorite developers feel about these changes. Regardless of there schemes you are an awesome talented man and seeing these videos inspires me to push forward with creativity! Hopefully unity realizes they are shooting themselves in the foot and go back to the old format otherwise they are going to kill the momentum of years of hard work.
just an fyi, a large amount of Unity higher ups sold their company stocks not too long ago before this announcement was made. They probably knew this announcement was going to cause the community to boycott them and they may be using this opportunity to do something else that i don't know exactly. Maybe selling the company?
I hope this won't effect the quality of project zero. I really liked what you did with zero. This Is coming from a old school gamer.Too bad the engine is in greedy clutches. I hope for the best.
Unity always seemed like a messed up engine. With any luck, you'll never be able to charge someone for learning C++ and GNU Make build-essential tools, and Unity trying to make me learn a special development technique that they own, just to make games that will run WORSE than if I build them using C++ and GNU Make tools, is pretty messed up. On top of that, charging me for someone else installing my game, or even TRACKING who installs my game and where, is messed up on top of messed up. I've been learning the Godot Engine, using C++ with it, but also trying to keep on top of learning regular ol' C++ and FOSS build-tools in case that engine starts adding license fees or tracking installs.
If you completely stop working with Unity and can actively prove it, you'd have a case. If you keep using it, then you are bound by whatever you agree to beyond that point, which would include having to pay for past installs. Assuming they can even track that.
This whole thing was a very painful reminder about putting all your eggs in one basket. When the news dropped, I was lucky as I had been doing personal work in and learning Unreal for a year while doing normal work in Unity and figured I'd just drop Unity and finally get off my ass and learn Godot. Meanwhile I was seeing other devs talk about having to learn an entirely new engine to work in for their projects going forward, let alone port over current ones. If you're still gonna use Unity going forward, please learn another engine on the side. Even if Unity has backpedaled, there's no certainty that they won't do something like this again. Additionally, it will make you look better on your resume applying for other game dev jobs if you're interested in that. Hell, you might even find the other engine works best for another project you have in the works.
Conspiracy Time! This is part of their plan to force micro-transactions into mobile titles (which they also collect on). So basically, they pulled a Wizards of the Coast.

Capitalism promises the dream of success. When you really look into it, it simply upholds the bourgeoisie and pits everyone else below them against each other. Just look at the disdain for Unions, lack of livable wages for all occupations, stable careers being decided by the fate of people you don't even know exist, and the constant importance put on material possessions. It's a dog-eats-dog system that preys on the suffering of one to benefit another. It's exploitable as any other economic system and what little fairness we still have are upheld by the lower class.
So here's my question. Why TF would they do this? Are they just tryna find a way to make more money? I mean if people move to gadot, unreal or other engines. What will they do then?
