Thanks so much for doing this whole series. It has been such a pleasure to watch you. I bought my last bike, a 1979 XS750F triple in April of 1979. It broke down in 1982 so I put it in the garage, and then trucked it through the various moves when we got married, had kids etc. It was only 2008 or so that I had someone look at it and diagnose the problem which turned out to be the petcock issue = leaking gas into the engine and sump thus blowing my engine. Rather than attempt a fix, I just let the bike go and have regretted it ever since. I am now retired, and watching your video series has made me anxious to shop around for another 79 XS750F. I always though the 1100 would be too big for me but I love the look of the bike, the standard not the special versions. So thanks again and keep making the videos.
Hey Andy, a bit off topic but I just finished watching this series so far and really enjoyed it. I will be starting my own XS1100 project this week and the information you have shared has educated me so much. Thanks for putting this together. Top notch production. I'm really looking forward to your final reveal in May.
Very informitive, but in regards to first and second some times we pay Peter to fix paul my freind ,having a 1998 yamaha R-1 and a Fjr-1300, well we have another pint of brew and move forward ,thanx keep the great videos coming!..
I've watched tons of your videos and have obtained a lot of useful information pertaining to my 1980 xs 1100. I actually had a couple questions about my bike. Bought bike off a guy it wasn't running. I paid to have it towed to my house, and got it running. I checked plugs and found that only three of the four cylinders were only firing. The spark plugs in cylinder 2 had a spark plugs that looked like it was dropped. Put new plugs in it and rode the bike a couple miles. There's oil coming out of the left side of exhaust and smoking. I decided to year bike down. I did have a valve that was bent, so I replaced it, along with all new valve seals, gaskets and piston rings. I'm still having oil that leaks out the left side of exhaust. The bike sputters at 45-50+ mph. I took bike apart recently and it looks like cylinder 2 is brand new compared to the other three cylinders. I came up with either the spark plug isn't firing or the shims are way off on tolerance. Any ideas
Well Andy its a hard road we travel but you're a man not affected by the hard work ya face into nearly there my good man Great job so far. Can't wait to see the full job and de big grin on yer face 😆
+Jim Aylward Cheers mate, it would be boring if it all went smoothly. But by the same token you reap what you sew and I ignored the engine, so I guess I had it coming. I want it to be without issues and it is very very close. The last thing I wanted was for this to be for sale as an "unfinished project" besides, it keeps me off the street.
What is my problem Andy. Fantastic bike man. I've mist a lot of these episodes. Gonna have to binge watch them all. BTW still haven't fix my problem. Simone broke in to my truck and stole all the tools to my name. Same day after replacing the window the truck broke down. A bunch of money later and still no tools. But the bikes rides like a dream other than the electrical stuff. Keep in touch.
Hey man, looks like you were able to make the tachometer work. is it because of the type you got or did you do something different? did you just connect the one signal wire and done? i believe its a white one.
+Andy's Motorcycle Obsessions very nice man, yeah I figured. Dont know why its so hard to get an accurate reading. That xs Rally looks so fun. just saw the vid. SO MANY XS1100!!!
Very interested in the 2nd gear fix, i have the same slip issue on my 80' xs750 would be more than happy to follow your video step by step on how to solve it, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience! also looking forward to seeing the rally!
Hi Andy,is there anything you need gasket wise I could probably help with.Have got a few over after t he build.Great to see that you have plan B already underway.Cheers Pete Pendlebury.
Hi Andy, I do definitely have base gasket and do have some valve guide seals but they came in an aftermarket gasket set.A mate of mine has used them to good effect and seem to be good alternative to OEM.Let me know and we can make contact and sort something out .Cheers Pete.
I bought the keyless like you show Don your you bought for your bike and you showed how to fit it it's like a little swiping and can also get the Rwanda put inside your gloves to swipe and I'm trying to get rid of my mission and have that AU and I I'd like to know which I did see it on your show I'd like to know what episode so I can try and find it and watch that
Looking at one of these for sale in the UK atm. Dont want to do much to it just oily rag. What I want to ask is, how's the handling with the long wheel base, I like the back roads? Don't expect it to be a scratcher but would like to use it on the back roads. Cheers.
Hi Andy. Thanks for the update. Can't tell you how much I appreciate your whole series as I just purchased an '81 with only 23k miles. Was wondering, do all XS's have the 2nd gear issue or is it hit and miss?
Andy I need your thoughts on extended shocks and shaft drive. 13"-15 inch. I own an 81 cb 900c. I know they carry gear oil, I'm not sure how they act on an angle when using longer shocks? Do they maintain lubrication along the shaft? I'm a new sub. you are a smart guy I'm glad I found your channel
G’day Mark. The oil is contained in the final drive hub, so the angle of the swing arm won’t make a difference. The oil will still carry to all of the components that need it. The small angle change that will result from slightly longer shocks won’t effect that.
My Xj600 has the same problem that 2nd gear jumps on high load but there was no damage on the gears etc......Valveguide seals aint expensive but i have a spare set for xj600 if you need....not sure if they fit to your engine....dont know how much the postage is from finland so is it worth the time to send or just donate you the money for the seals....... My xj didnt smoke but i smelled the oil´ish stink, changed the valveguide seals and the problem is no longer there. .....If you get the "complete" gasget set for your engine, be sure to contact seller for complete seal list ......my xj600 "complete" gasget set didnt have all the gasgets and only few O.rings.....It was really annoying to order the other gasgets that didnt come whit the set
+TT GarageRat Yeah I will get to the trans soon. As for the engine, I've got a bit of experience in that department so I'm not at all concerned. Thanks for the offer of new guide seals but I will purchase a set when time, and money, allow. Most gaskets sets these days unfortunately don't come with oil seals, it sucks big time. Lucky for me I have no other leaking areas, crankshaft seals etc are fine.
Hey Andy how did the JBS rear shocks hold up? I just bought a set because of the price and because you put them on basket case. Will I be changing them out in 12 months?
andy my problems are with the charging at 1000 rpms idle..its not charging enuff to keep my battery charged it takes 3000 rpms just to see the signals blink good... i did change the rectifier with one the same age as the original ebay.. then after i got new batt i changed the stator and stator coil i still have the same issue what do you think it is what voltage goes to the center coil on stator ??????
+harold witham That's very odd Harold. I would have done exactly what you did. Power supply to the field coil is 12 volts and it is supplied from the ignition. There should be a red wire that is fed to the ignition switch from the battery via a 30 amp fuse. From the ignition switch there is a tan coloured wire that feeds the field coil (stator) and the fuse box. There is also a tan wire coming from the reg/rec that feeds 14.5V back into the loom to charge the battery. You should check the contacts in your plugs and make sure all your earths are good, including engine to frame. You can check the alternator with an ohms meter. Field coil terminals - brown to green should be 3.5 ohms +/- 10% at 20 deg Celsius (68F). Stator coil terminals - check each white wire against the other two white wires. Value should be 0.4 ohms +/- 10% at 20 deg Celsius (68F) don't get too caught up in the numbers, as long as they are with in 10% of each other and no higher than about 2 ohms it should be OK. You also need to test if there is a leak to earth. Watch this video, it may help. Good luck mate. ruclips.net/video/44hLjPBObYw/видео.html
thanks andy i think i seen the video checking around for info but yes i will check all the grounds and plugs that i can .. i bought a reg off of ebay for it but it blows fueses on the main pops as soon as i turn the key i didnt take any chances with it and put the old one back on i think the pos and neg are backwards im going to see bout changing them ... as you know there are 2 plugs one with the yellow wires and one with pos .and neg these are the 2 i think that could be backwards.on the new rectifier...im going to try switch them over to see if it starts to charge very soon also wanna say thank you for having our bikes as the star lol!! of your channel i have almost seen every one haha! i have a total parts bike at my finger tips if i need it .if you will please friend me on facebook harold witham ok thanks buddy
update !! i took everything off again and checked all the connections on stator they where 0.07 to 0.09 on ohms that looked great so went to coil all checked out great however i found a brown wire on the clip going to thereg it wasnt making contact with the harness at all clip inside connector after making a adjustment !!! i went on and just got a new batt to so everthing was up to date WoW!now !!! 12.74 volts at 1000 rpms and goes to 15.07with headlight on high and signals going !!! so heck yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!starts so much better and so smooth and i love the throttle responce !!!!
I have a 1980 yamaha 1100 when i ride it down the road a block it will just die i push on the starter button its dead if i push on the horn then the start button will work but will not start 5 min lattter it will start and run for one block and the hole process starts over were should I start looking bo you think
Hmmm, it’s the horn thing that has me perplexed. I would start at the plug under the fuel tank from/to the right hand handler switches. Make sure the little contacts are clean and tight, this sometimes requires a tweak with a scriber or something to open up the pins. And go over the bike and double check that any and all chassis earth connections are clean and solid.

Hi Zay, thanks for the comments. It's not over yet, episode 41 should be up in about 3 hours time. Good luck with the project.
thanks for the update, i was also considering rear sets. You have become a wizard at working on Basket Case, keep up the great work.
Hi mate, thanks for the comments. Your bike is looking sharp, loooove the Ox blood seat.

Sorry to hear about the issues Andy, i have yet to rebuild my engine, waiting for some money to land then I'll start it.
+Jason Parker There were always going to be issues mate. No big deal, I'll just work through them one at a time
Sucks about the issues man. But we trust you. You go this man.

Hi Joel, it has a wire that wraps around one of the HT leads, I don't trust the tacho, it's not that accurate. Speedo is fine.
