I very much enjoy this reaction to the masterpiece of a cypher that is the Fossil Pokémon Rap Cypher, Nina, especially considering how this was uploaded on my birthday. I am an enormous paleo-nerd (in other words I have a ginormous interest in prehistoric life) and Pokémon fan, so this was the cypher for me to enjoy the heck out of! The main selected fits an adventurous explorer theme that illustrates paleontologists, and this is one of the few times in a cypher where I’d say every verse was, at the very least, good. I wish briefly summarize my thoughts on each verse below, and I’d really love it if you give what I have to say a thorough read; you may even learn a thing or two.
Cam Steady himself begins the cypher by representing one of the best of the original 151, Aerodactyl. The explosion from the intro to his verse is a good one, symbolizing that the fossils have come to life. Cam does a good job at showcasing that Aerodactyl ruled the skies back in its day, and this is followed up by the Amber alert line, which ties in the Old Amber, a reference to how it’s used by Lance, an eight-way rhyme scheme combo revolved around “terror’s tactile”, two references to Abilities (specifically Pressure, one of Aerodactyl’s regular Abilities, and Tough Claws, Mega Aerodactyl’s Ability), and a couplet on how Mega Aerodactyl is said to be the ‘mon's true form. All in all, this is a solid verse from Cam.
Best moment: the “terror’s tactile” rhyme scheme combo
    Overall score: 9.5/10
Kevin Krust then enters as Omastar, bringing up the Ability Weak Armor, which can be considered contradictory to the possible point of referencing the ‘mon's Shell Smash set. The ammon-idea pun was fun, as was the cephalopod-cast, both of which illustrate Omastar’s basis of ammonites well. Foreshadowing of a later part of a later part then happens before a golden ratio line is dropped, likely referencing Omanyte’s/Omastar’s spiral shell. The final quarter delves into Twitch Plays Pokémon and the highlight of Lord Helix, represented by this evolution line. It is easily the highlight for this verse, which is good aside from some basic lines and the wording of parts of the first quarter.
Best moment: “I don’t spiral, known for my high roll / Born a star, I’m built to go viral…Soon they’ll praise me on a man-made VOD”
    Overall score: 7.7/10
LEECHY! as Kabutops is up next, and to illustrate Lord Dome being Lord Helix’s enemy, this dude’s low, intimidating voice is provided. The rhyme combo of “try to fight”/“try to bite”/“trilobite” was great, as were the references to Kabutops sucking the fluids out of its prey (the “Leech your Life” and “Mega Drain” lines). A few more line refs are then brought up, with the most notable after the Leech Life ref then comes: “Swimming Swift like an Aqua Jet”, a tie in to Kabutops’ Ability Swift Swim and the Water-type priority move Aqua Jet. “300 mega years, can’t make a better me” is also noticeable since it may tie into the theory of Genesect being an upgraded Kabutops. The closing lines are great, with “Kabutops of the food chain, Rock Tomb the new age” showcasing dominance and the evolution to adapt better on land, and the Mega Drain line being a good transition into the next verse, consisting of another ‘mon that can get the move and happens to be part Grass-type. Overall, this was an excellent verse.
Best moment: “This kabutogani’s like a shinigami / as I Leech your Life in the depths I dwell”
    Overall score: 10/10
Keetheweeb enters in as Cradily and begins with a singing intro. In it, she brings up Cradily’s eyes not being too obvious at first glance how its body anchors it down to avoid being knocked down, and how it melts away prey. She then goes into rap mode (a nice nod to Trickywi’s Diantha verse, one of my personal favorites and one I think is likely underrated) and repeats a line in the style of Hollaback Girl’s titular line (My tentacles got you captured) before going into a good trio of lines that use alliteration well before ending her verse. This verse has a good duality and well-written lines, but also some meh moments, which weigh it down.
Best moment: “Ending my enemy when they stuck in my anemone / Acidically causing calamity and catastrophe / Happily handing out hazardous hostility”
    Overall score: 8.8/10
Mat4yo then enters as Armaldo, and begins by bringing up the Quick Claw, which may have to do with this primal prawn being early in evolving claws. Hoenn terminology is then brought up with the Contest bar, then we get cooking terms, and then a reference to Armaldo being the Plate Pokémon and a tectonic plate tie-in. The next two lines are decent, and then we get a clever line on how Armaldo will deliberately destroy its opponent’s team when putting its team on its back. The “roughest amphibian aficionado” line was good, too. The next couplet succeeds at asserting dominance, then the next talk about how one obtains the Claw Fossil, which can be revived into Anorith (which evolves into Armaldo) in the Route 111 desert, while the last likely ties into the desert scheme and how being in one is perilous. This verse was good, but it had some meh lines that done make is good as it otherwise could be and Mat4yo has better verses in other cyphers.
Best moment: “Now you don’t wanna brawl with the first Quick Claw kid / Toughest on the Block in the Pokémon Contest / Bars so hard from the jaw of a raw shrimp / Plates that I serve ya on: tectonic”
    Overall score: 8/10

TheManBeHisLa then enters as Bastiodon, and he carries the opening rhyme scheme and defense-based image Bastiodon is known for. He then goes into a new rhyme scheme that he, once again, executes perfectly, then another one that encompasses a larger span of time that he, once again, executes perfectly. The flows for each were also excellent, thus adding to this verse’s goodness.
Best moment: The entire first half of the verse, as it demonstrates how defense-committed Bastiodon is from the front.
      Overall score 9.2/10
Aerial Ace is up next, and he establishes how committed Rampardos is to attacking (the OCD line appears to strength things regarding this). He then makes a reference to Jurassic Park, which is nice, and then later comes the creativity of “Sleeping with the gems”. The whole rhyme scheme afterward was awesome, as was the “Underground” line, which I interpret as a double entendre on the Sinnoh Underground and the underground rap scene. The closer was stellar, referencing Rampardos’ Mold Breaker ability and how some would view this ‘mon as having a limited attacking method, which is denied here. All in all, this was a solid verse.
Best moment: “…the bar low, parlay and see how the par go / I take ‘em down under par dos / Stick and stones gon’ break your bones, I’ma narco / Pack on pack like a parcel”
      Overall score: 8.5/10
Zach B as Archeops begins by (indirectly) asserting dominance, which is fitting for the Fossil ‘mon whose base stat total in default form is the highest. The line “Yeah, I’ve been above, never see me drop to half health” was spectacular, as it talks about the ‘mon being capable of flight and how it’s destructive when above half HP. The perspective writing then comes, and the line about N really impacts me after having learned about N’s Archeops in the manga. The second half adds even more goodness, beginning with “first to be fly” and then later making wordplays regarding Archeops’ Ability, Defeatist. All in all, this is one of the best verses in this cypher.
Best moment: “Say that my Ability is stupid, and it’s true / But we won’t ever even see it when you use your moves stupidly”
      Overall score: 12/10
Cami-Cat as Carracosta perfectly embodies that Pokémon. She makes a ref to Carracosta possibly being partially based on a leatherback sea turtle, and then brings up Squirtle, another Water-type turtle ‘mon, which is considered lesser. Cami-Cat then goes into a singing portion, using her higher and lower ranges, and there, she brings up things such as how Carracosta can learn Withdraw and lacks teeth and claws. She then goes into her gritty voice, with backups from Cam enhancing the rapping. Swift Swim and Sturdy, two of the 'mon’s Abilities, and connects how Carracosta is both adept in water and (to a lesser extent) on land. Frigid Sea, the location for this ‘mon in Sw/Sh, is then mentioned, and the verse ends with a ref to how Carracosta devours its prey completely, including the bones and shells of said prey.
Best moment: The gritty second half of the verse
      Overall score: 12/10
PE$O PETE is next, and he is indeed appropriately loudmouthed, fitting for the dinosaur despot that is Tyrantrum. He shows his true dominant side already in the first quarter. The weakness of having small arms is later mentioned, then followed up by namedropping the Ability Strong Jaw. A good multisyllabic rhyme scheme is then followed, which is then continued throughout the rest of the verse. Certain repeated topics prevent me from ranking this higher, but it was a great verse.
Best moment: the entire first quarter of the verse
      Overall score: 9/10

Aurorus is my favorite Fossil Pokémon, and Chi-Chi being designated it is just perfect. She begins with an intense singing part before rapping and showcasing Aurorus being Rock/Ice, having a long neck and being capable of summoning auroras. Then we get more good lines, including references to the moves Avalanche and Icy Wind and that Aurorus has sails. Then comes a rap breakdown that is a sonically powerful as the rest of the verse. A Land Before Time reference is then made before Ancient Power and a ref to how Aurorus can freeze everything around it when enraged is said and the verse closes off with Chi-Chi’s intense vocals. This verse is beyond a 10/10.
Best moment: “Like an Avalanche, I crash in on site / On an Icy Wind, I sail to the spotlight” though arguably I could say “the entire verse”.
      Overall score: 13/10
The Kevin Bennett opens up with a Drake bar while then making a few more relevant comparisons to Dracozolt. Then he brings up some perspective-based lyrics, which are accompanied by some creative writing skills, such as the electric connotation of “energy” and the “a(r)rival of/into history” flip/wordplay. Then, talk on Dracozolt’s beefy lower body is brought up before he shifts into how the Galar Fossils came to life: scientists revived two halves into one Pokémon, leading to the Frankenstein-esque monsters we know them as. The Cara Liss reference was also nice as TKB’s verse concludes. In the end, this was extremely well-written.
Best moment: The final quarter of the verse
      Overall score: 11/10
isthatfr0st stays on topic as he begins by bringing up how Arctozolt is a chimera, then later bringing up how it is viable up to the UUBL tier in Smogon. The next few lines are nothing special to me, but then, Bolt Beak is mentioned, which is the 'zolts’ signature move, and after that, we get an Icicle Crash ref, which also takes into account that move may make the target flinch. Then comes a line about Arctozolt cannot move fast, then followed up by how it can Avalanche do double damage if it moves last. Later, its Hidden Ability Slush Rush is alluded to, and it ends nicely. This verse started off good, then became meh, but was then good again in later on.
Best moment: The third quarter of the verse
      Overall score: 8.3/10
Continuing the Ice fossil theme is McGwire as Arctovish, and in the second line, he brings up its Ability Ice Body. Later comes a homophone between “lock” and “loch” that I very much appreciate. The Ice Spinner line does feel out-of-place given that neither it nor Arctovish were ever together as of now. But this gets made up for during the intense moments in the second half, which may symbolize the Galar fossils’ state while still bringing good lines.
Best moment: “Hail on Earth make you white out fast / With a sky to match when I blast”
      Overall score: 8.2/10
Drip$tick closes it as Dracovish, my least favorite of the fossils, but how does this verse do? We’ll find out immediately. Drip’s designation as one of the Water-type fossils was a good idea, and the first thing of note is him bringing up the location of where the fossils are revived in Galar: Route 6. Then comes a Strong Jaw reference, immediately followed by another Drake bar. Then we get a line on how Ash used one in the anime, then followed four lines later by Drip talking about Dracovish lacking a proper body. The “coin flip” combo then comes, and it hammers in the goodness of this verse, as the ‘mon is made up of a head and a tail (and two legs, or quarters, brought up in the next line) and coins are used in the Trading Card Game. The Fishous Rend set then comes next, then followed by how it, along with Ash and the rest of his team, won the Masters 8 League, before closing the cypher two lines late. For my least-favorite Fossil, Dracovish had an excellent closing verse, and this really shows.
      Best moment: “Heads-tails winning, that’s a coin flip…Fish’ Rend double buff, it’s a W”
      Overall score: 9.3/10
This cypher is probably Cam’s best, which I very much am happy about. It’s easily an S+ cypher, which is an 11/10 score, and once again, thanks for this reaction, Nina Hope.
