we can make way more advanced robots than this, the art of them haven't been lost, it's been advanced, there are numerous automatons that work the same way made in modern timess
Man creating machines with human functionality's/looks is a long held fantasy of humanity. It exists at almost all cultures - take a look at the Jewish 16th century Golem (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golem), or Hephaestus (Greek god) with his mechanical servants. It's not anything new - it's a desire that reappears without any obvious cause in, again, almost all cultures.

End3r they have, the example I know best is from the movie Hugo where they built 2 working automaton.
