yes it is a joke because it can’t do the exact same thing, vice grips can’t hold a clamp like that smart one. Especially in the hard to reach areas the vice grip won’t hold. Thats why there are clips on the ends that hold the ends of the clamps.
@@contytub I throw old spring clamps away they always leak eventually even if you put them exactly where they were. They are meant for removing not putting back but yes but I agree with both statements
Or you take some channel locks and you slide the clamp up the hose. Let it go then put the hose on. Grab the channel locks again and slide the clamps back up. Takes the same amount of time (maybe even faster) and you don’t need some fancy tool
These pliers utilize the biting teeth and lock in the engaged position much like the tool i bought made by mayhew wich turned out to be a lifesaver. I bought the set that had a cable with the handgrip being 24 inches away from the gripping part, along with the pliers. The grip is secure enough to manipulate the clamp over the hose. With regular pliers i always slipped putting the clamp on a new hose wich sent the clamp flying accross the shop with the all too familiar "piinnng!!".
Love the comments, people sure do hate change. I just ordered these on Amazon, $96. I have about 5 other hose clamp tools, but I’m always interested in finding something better. I believe in putting a customers car back to factory condition, no aftermarket, no re-engineering. The factory installed spring clamps, I install spring clamps.
Wow amazing! I've been using flat jaw vice grips for years. Amazing that you were looking for a solution and it's been around for years. Try a heavy tie-wrap when disassembling, then just cut when your ready to release...
Out of all the things I've worked on, hose clamps were never an issue,.. especially working on a truck like that. There's less room in the Crab Nebula compared to that engine bay.
I love Knipex, have a lot of Knipex, and even I think the hose clamp Cobras are expensive! (And I have a pair.) The locking hose clamp Cobras cost even more than that! (And I don't have a pair... yet.) The little divots on each jaw that contact the hose clamp tabs pivot, so you can move the plier position while engaged. Very neat.
Yes I bought them and they make those hose clamps a breeze. But if you don't wanna spend the money. Use reg pliers and a socket over once pinched to hold
Move the clamps about 3-4 inches onto the hose. Seat the hose and then squeeze the clamps and slide them into place. You can even move the clamps around so it is easier to mess with later on
Always good to have multiple styles of hose clamp pliers around. Definitely would recommend something like this along with the cable units to get you started.
Channel locks work fine. Your problem is using lineman pliers and keeping the clamp in place. Just slide the clamp down the hose untill the hose is back on.
These are great for tue too easily accessible hose but you need the cable one for the lower hose and other hard to reach clamps. As a mechanic you always want the right tool for the job. Sure channel locks work but they’re not ideal
Great tool, I’ll stick to my standard slip joint pliers. Not gonna spend the money for a tool that doesn’t fit most places I need them to. I’ve also got pretty good grip and I don’t have a problem with my pliers slipping on those clamps. I also NEVER reuse those clamps, use a real hose clamp.
Every time I come accross those spring hose clamps, they get tossed out. "But they put constant pressure on the hose". I have never had a screw hose clamp fail. Easy to install and remove.
Those are nice when the hose is on top. Butnthey suck hard core when the hose is located anywhere else under the hood. There is a nice hose clamp tool that is compact and has a cable that clamps and releases. You can fish that smaller clamp tool all over the place.
I have a blue point set of hose clamp pliers. Lockable like the one in the video, but it pivots so can can re angle it as I move the clamp. It's really nice in tight spaces where the one in the video might be a little cumbersome being stuck solidly to the clamp.
Have you ever had the pliers slip off and have the spring clip open up quick and hit your fingers on the helping hand? It’s a very special kind of pain that deadset makes you want to get on the ground and have a good cry.
Not for nothing, but the "Old Way" was channel locks. But these are nice, I prefer the remote ones because other than the upper rad hose, these seem to work nowhere else on a modern car.
I didn't know those existed. I will be ordering 2 of them. I hate spring clamps so much I will change them to band clamps even though a band clamp can cause damage.
I'm gonna say those clamps are meant to stay open if you know how to use them you can clip them open and just a little more complicated to release them again
Seen some hose clamps like that, had an ear design where they clip together for easier install and removal then a little squeeze and quick release let's em snap back tight
Just have to learn those clamps will lock if you open them all the way and just got to push down a little bit in the unlock no matter what pliers you use you don't have to hold on to him they actually have a locking mechanism in the clamp you're showing
So they are really cool and I'm glad you made a video! But the problem I have is why do you leave the clamp at the end of the hose and not just slide the clamp up the hose so you don't have to deal with that issue of trying to squeeze the clamp and attach the hose or pull the hose?
1. The never use a wrench. Those would be Slip joint pliers. 2. On the "2nd position" they don't close the tips far enough to squeeze the clamp a suitable ammount.
Why wouldn’t you just slide the clamp down the hose then put hose on and move clamp back to edge of hose so you wouldn’t have to try to hold the clamp open well your trying to slide hose on. And channel locks work great for that.
That type of hose clamp you actually use a long flat head screwdriver put it down alongside the clamp and and bend it and pull the tabs together and it opens you don't use pliers. 📡👽🇺🇸 RUN!!!
While these are nice if you are doing this every day, all you have to do is move the clamp up the hose off the fitting, install the hose, and then move it into position. I have a set of clamp release pliers including the long reach cable style and they are amazing, but I still use them to slide the clamp up the hose out of the way, rather than trying to install the hose with something flopping around off the side.
Those are nice, but it would not work for my car because there are a lot of clamps i couldn't get to with those. I got one of the long, flexible ones that can get into tiny spaces.
Yeah... Just take the clamp off with any set of pliers, slide the hose off, do your work and sliede it back on. AFTERWARDS you take the pliers and move the clamp to where it belongs. And buy yourself some regular knipex pliers without that extra stuff to break.
I never reuse those P.O.S. hoseclamps.. always replace them with stainless ones that I can tighten. They don't wear out or break in half because they rusted to shit.. high performance doesn't like those dumb things. Nor do head gaskets when the coolant lines blow off

Same. That's the reason why I buy tools
If youre going to get a set of hose clamp pliers just get a set of the ones that are made for getting into tight spaces.
Hose then the clamp. The time you took messing around trying to do both at the same time I spent refilling the system 😅
Right, never seen anyone do it at once 😂

Cable ones are junk. I use a pair of Mac vise grip. The cable ones haven't left my tools box in years. Waste of money.
Love my cable ones 👌🏽👌🏽
Everything Knipex makes is quality

I'll stick with my cable style clamp pliers.. I can sneak that thing right down into a lot of places where you can't even reach 😉

Knipex makes quality stuff. I've been using their side cuts for a long time.
I bought a set that has 3 ft of cable, and a lock on it, when your messing with a ford Taurus or pt cruiser, they are worth every penny.
Knipex is NICE. Quality tools matter.
They would be handy for seized and rusty clamps. And cars where the hose is blocked by the upper radiator support

Those rings lock themselves.
Squeeze harder
💅
Most do not...
And after you do they stretch out. They lose tension after 150k miles worth of heat cycles.
Not all of them lock
I was gonna say the same. Also I use 90 degree needle nose pliers. I don't know why people struggle with these
Some of them lock open, most do not
You can achieve the same with a normal pair of multi grips and a zip tie. Or just normal multi grips. Or vice grips/locking pliers.
Now try to use it in tight area. Cable ones for me

Maybe show it off on a tighter spot like at the water pump outlet...
I've used a pipe wrench for 20 years or a set of wood clamps...
Knipex makes some of the best pliers around
Vice grips
Naw channel locks
You don't need them. But they are nice to have when they are useful.
