      Interesting. Thanks! If I remember correctly, Jeff Walker in "The Ayn Rand Cult" mentions that inner-circle members meeting at Rand's NYC apartment in the 1950s-60s were often chided for NOT smoking, since Rand had such admiration for the habit in Atlas Shrugged, with the scene of the cigarette salesman in the lobby of the Taggart building saying something about a cigarette symbolizing "fire at man's fingertips," representing, I suppose, the control of nature via man's rational faculty.

    Shocking that such a critical philosophy has been reduced to a “Wayne’s World”- level presentation. The speakers should be seated facing each other. Proper microphones should be used. Proper lighting is needed. A fundamental structure is needed. The opportunity wasted is breathtaking. Most viewers, including me, have no idea who the man sitting “behind”Piekoff is. A proper introduction is, of course, needed. In the final analysis, Objectivism, as such, is all but extinct. The likes of the ARI have diluted, hijacked, and indeed dismantled the philosophy so that it’s unrecognizable. Ridiculous, rambling, unprofessional (pets!, oye) appearances like this only further discredit the serious work Rand did, and reduces it to just a non-factor in today’s world. I just don’t get it. To paraphrase Jack “The Joker” Nicholson, “This Philosophy Needs An Enema‼️”

      I agree that the presentation could have been much better, but "this" is not Objectivism, nor does it have any impact on Ayn Rand's philosophy qua philosophy. This was not a talk about Objectivism. It was a catch up with Leonard Peikoff, who will likely not be with us for a tremendous amount of time. Not everything has to be a buttoned up, formal discussion about philosophy. If you know anything about Objectivism, probably it's biggest value is to help individuals love life and take values seriously. Leonard's dog was a huge value to him. You seem like someone who "understands" Objectivism rationalistically.

    • @economicfreedom8591
      @economicfreedom8591 6 дней назад

      Ayn Rand originally hoped that Atlas Shrugged would be adapted for a multi-part TV special, with the screenplay being written by Sterling Silliphant, a well-known screenwriter for movies and television back in the day. Somehow the project fell through (as so many do). The Atlas Shrugged trilogy of movies starting in 2011 is appalling on every level: weak casting; weak, "literal" transcribing of dialogue and action from the novel to the screen (an amateurish practice); thoroughly forgettable music; etc. Because of financial issues, the executive producer, John Aglialoro, had to recast the main characters in each of the 2 sequels. Interestingly, the original idea was to have a single movie (perhaps 2.5 - 3 hours long, with intermission) with screenplay adaptation by Randall Wallace (who also wrote the screenplay for Mel Gibson's film, "Braveheart"). The script was not chosen for lensing by Aglialoro, and oddly, has completely disappeared. But according to an online article a few years ago by someone who had read the script, it was supposed to be excellent because it focused on a single event in the novel that Wallace thought to be an "essential dramatic action" helping to unify everything else, including events that were supposed to concretize the philosophical idea of an "ability strike"; i.e., the extramarital affair between Hank Reardon and Dagny Taggart.
      Just as the romantic affair between Rick Blain and Ilsa Lund in "Casablanca" functions as the central narrative axis around which all of the other subplots in the movie orbit - the search for the "letters of transit"; the "trail of refugees" leaving Europe"; "Victor Laszlo" freedom fighter and his somewhat formal and cool relationship with his wife, Ilsa"; "Signor Ferrari" as head of all illegal activity in Casablanca . . . including human trafficking; and of course, the Nazi invasion of European countries itself. Philip and Julius Epstein, who wrote the screenplay (with additions toward the end by Howard Koch, a producer) understood that you can't focus equally on all of those events. From a narrative technique perspective (as well as from an understanding of what audiences respond favorably to) they made the on-off-on-off affair between the 2 stars of the movie - Rick Blain (Humphrey Bogart) and Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) - the central focus, and showed how their relationship was altered by all of the other subplot events mentioned above. That's just basic screenplay/story-crafting technique, something that wasn't followed in the Atlas trilogy. Instead, the producers opted for a literal, one-to-one transcription of events in the novel to events on the screen, resulting in a collision of multiple storylines that competed with one another, rather than lending support to a single storyline. Additionally, one of the end-credits cited David Kelley as the "philosophical consultant" to the movie. I've never heard of a "philosophical consult" to a movie production. It sounds like some sort of "storytelling cadre officer" whose job is to enforce compliance with a set of ideas that are expected to be "front-loaded" into the screenplay, rather than allowing those ideas to emerge *implicitly* as part of the actual storytelling process. Although I'm not confident the next production of Atlas will be better, let's hope that the writer follows basic story-crafting technique, and doesn't try to stuff everything into the screenplay.

    >>>"Unless you can give me an objective, geometrical proof that the notes of this exactly correspond to the words of Ayn Rand, it's out!"
    He wants a "geometrical proof" that specific musical notes in a symphony "exactly correspond" to specific words in a novel! That's possibly one of the silliest things I've ever heard from any Objectivist . . . even someone who declared himself to be Rand's "intellectual heir."
    Based on her own writings and lectures, two of Rand's favorite composers were Sergei Rachmaninoff and ragtime piano composer, Scott Joplin (she once said about the latter, "If you don't like his music, there's something wrong with you"). Could we please see an "objective, geometrical proof" that any sequence of notes in any work by those two composers exactly corresponds to any words in any work by Ayn Rand? The request is silly because the premise behind it is nonsense.
