I think what makes this adaption work so much compared to some other ones, not only anime, but cartoons, is that it is so COLOURFUL!! Adapting to the real life doesn't mean that colour needs to be lost. So many older iconic movies did not shy away from making colours pop out. It really adds the life and magic to it.
They've fully leaned into the 'campy', fantastical, and straight up weirdness of One Piece that makes it so special.
Definitely! I didn't watch One Piece, I knew it was a good anime, but couldn't find the time to get into it. This live action is so good it made me fall in love with the story and now I really want to watch the anime!
To be honest, the color was actually my only complaint of season 1. It felt really desaturated, and at times reminded me more of House of the Dragon or something. But unless I'm just imagining all of it, season 2 fixed all that, and truly felt like One Piece!!

@TheNudeBrewer True, but as someone who was a teen in the ‘70’s, I still love how Netflix uses Styx’s song for the show. The gentle classical-style piano opening of “Come Sail Away” fits in nicely with the Baroque Works villains. Plus, it ties in nicely to Season 3, where I assume the Straw Hats will run into Enel, an alien who thinks he’s a god.
Zorro's fight scenes alone are worth watching for. I mean the rest is good too, but seriously, wow!

That is largely because Eiichiro Oda only gave them the rights if he gets his say on everything. If he as the creator isn't happy he can pull the plug at any time. So the integrity and his vision are being done justice. I for one cannot wait to see Season 2. My husband and I absolutely loved the first season.

Never watched One Piece until season 1 of the live action. Spent the entire time between then and now watching every episode of the anime, and just got all caught up a couple weeks ago. That was a ton of binge watching, but it was worth it. What a story.

The live action i adore and love the first season and the 2nd season seems to be containing that brilliance! The pacing in the 1st season was great and no filler! Because Netflix seems to think the clothing of pirates on an adventure across the open ocean & fighting battles would consist of clean, spotless, bright & colorful, pristine costumes.
Not a speck of dirt. No tears, wrinkles, discoloration, etc. Not a single stray fiber or spot of dampness from the weather or ocean. Just perfectly clean clothing.
It wastes the amazing VFX & actual practical ship they built. Everything else looks believable, until you see the characters standing out so much.

But the world of one piece is immersive in a way where it does fit and convinces you this is how it’s suppose to be. I see no difference with the tv adaptation
