The fish can breathe. The bags have air pumped into them and it's tied off tightly giving it pressure. Usually the fish are bought from farms or stores (which also came from farms) at bulk so it's no different from buying them at the store. The only reason why they die easily is because people don't care for them properly. Fish are actually really difficult to care for.
The goldfish at the fair in San Diego they come in these really cute containers with rocks but I found out they give the fishes drugs 😐 so my fish only lasted 8 days cause of the drugs so seeing those fish in the bags makes me cry 😭
