HGV DASHCAM - THINGS YOU SEE 2

  • Footage taken from a HGV DashCam, thankfully no serious incidents or injuries, only perhaps a moments lack of concentration, but there are some examples of a total lack of respect for the rules of the road.
    Intro music is Carroll Park (Sting), by John Deley and the 41 Players, and the background music is, Hurts So Good Blues, by the Unicorn Heads, both from the RUclips music library.

    I love the relaxing blues soundtrack, because a lot of these dashcam videos are wall-to-wall swearing and road rage.
    The roads would be a lot safer if everyone just calmed down and drove sensibly.

    I really hate when people drive side by side on a empty road. Just... why...
    It doesn't really matter if you're following the speed limit, keep the right lane (or the left lane if you're british 😅).

    2:50 I saw that exact situation today, 3 trucks all trying to pass each other, all limited to the same speed. Thanks for slowing down and letting the other 2 pass. so many don't. I got past them in the 4th lane, and as I was leaving at the next exit, decided to drive slowly in the 1st lane and force the 1st truck to let the others pass. 10 seconds of his time and he didn't like it one bit! Honking and right up behind me so all I could see was his radiator grille. As soon as the other truck was level with me I gave him a flash of my hazards and accelerated off up the exit. I'm sure he'll do the exact same thing next time though. Why are so many truckers so inconsiderate about letting other trucks pass? I would note that I am considerate to truckers at junctions, giving them space to turn. (There are many drivers who seem completely unaware that trucks need extra space to turn in.)

    I love how you get drivers like yourself who look ahead and plan, Gary, and then in the comments you get those guys who go "oh I've been driving for thirty years blah blah" who once you've seen drive make you wonder how they have a licence. I know too many of that sort...

  • @dennisphoenix1

    That's the thing with driving a truck , you are actually driving your truck , the 4 or 5 cars in front and another truck half the time . Because if you weren't looking ahead so far you would end up in trouble with some car driver who can't see passed the end of his bonnet . Like your "Can't fault it " comments 😉

    I spent almost my whole working life following in my father's footsteps on the roads of the UK and Europe, driving both HGV's and PSV's. We both lived by the same mantra as we climbed behind the wheel each morning, "Some bastard's going to try to kill me today!"
    I'm retired now and how I wish I'd had dash-cams to record some of the idiocracy I've witnessed over the years. And I have to wonder how many of your viewers would have understood why you took account of the bloke with the drag when he was so far ahead of you, if you hadn't mentioned it? With luck they will have learnt something.
    By the way, my father started driving a horse 'n cart and I still have his impressive collection of safe driving medals.

      Don, some nice memories there. About 6 years since I stopped going to Europe, still better over there, but nowhere near what it used to be, and Calais was then at the height of the illegals, that was no fun, fortunately we could come back to Hull and miss it.
      I like yours & your Dad's saying, I was once told "these things are easy to drive, until something goes wrong, and then it's one hell of a mess". And the best DashCam footage, is at the end of the day when there is nothing of note!

    We have the Highway Code and if everyone followed it exactly and took their time to implement it there would not be an accident anywhere in the country. Unfortunately, not everyone can read, not everyone understands what the directives mean, some people are more observant than others, perceptive ability varies with the individual etc., etc., ad infinitum.

    Back in the days of crash gearbox' no power steering or heaters we used a code of headlight flashes to/and allow overtaking tec. If I remember correctly it was in a tight spot a long flash to say I'm coming through, a quick flash says you come on. To overtake the rear vehicle would give a flash and the leading truck would give a quick flash of his rear lights, rear truck would overtake once safely by the overtaken truck would flash his headlights to say you can pull in. The overtaker would flash THANKS.
    There were hazard lights, flashing indicators were just being installed and they were on a spring loaded count down switch that self cancelled, so on a long turn you had to re-apply it.
    I did install a cruise control that consisted of a half inch by 1inch batten cut to length that fitted under the dash and held the throttle flat out at 45 mph.
    The M1 had just been built started just N of South Mimms, I think it finished near Brown Hills then a bit of a slap to the M6. The hard shoulder was the soft shoulder, so we never pulled off in case of an incident. No upper speed limit and Aston Martins on test would pass at well over the ton.

    Fact is , "A GOOD" driver expects the unexpected, "A GOOD " driver is on a real road, a "profesional Highway, , the others are ignorant people on a playing field! I drove a car round an orchard and market garden aged 8, (I was born in 1950) when was getting ready to drive on the roads, ,at 16, my old man, (A Proffesional HGV, PSV driver) said to me, think of everyone else as an idiot, and expect the unexpected so keep clear, and alway look at least three vehicles ahead. There goes father,passed aged 75 in 1999, here I am decades later, and his advice is more valid than ever!

    Great video but as the first video rubbish music playing so I watch with no sound , as for hgv passing I have cruise control on set at 56mph but as my Daf has a under powered engine it slows going up hills and even the wind can slow it down, the problem I have is when I get to the top of hill and its picks up speed again I get a another hgv trying to pass me , so I have to slow down or they just cut in front, and I end up having to overtake them because they are restricted to lower speed , does my head in.

    • @bluegary59
      @bluegary59  5 лет назад +1

      Michael, I generally have mine set about 84km, it will get you there and lets anyone at 90 get past with ease. If somebody is struggling, then it's easy to knock it off a bit to let them pass. As for the hill thing, it's always a problem, but I would be letting them go, chances are that my exhaust will be kicking in to hold it back anyway. Either way, nobody should be cutting in, with all that weight there is too much at stake. Have a look at my other video, "Not all bad", ruclips.net/video/U454-lF1MpA/видео.html you'll need the sound off again. Stay safe out there.

    I'm curious, what's the rules regarding lorries on a 4 lane motorway? Can they use the 3rd lane or are they still only permitted to use the two like on a 3 lane motorway?

    • @bluegary59
      @bluegary59  5 лет назад +5

      Hi, as far as I read the rules, on a motorway with more than 2 lanes, it's the "outside lane" which is not permitted for HGV's to use. So on a 2 lane motorway, HGV's can use both lanes 1 & 2, on a 3 lane motorway can use lanes 1 & 2, on a 4 lane motorway can use lanes 1, 2, & 3.

    • @hikaru9624
      @hikaru9624 5 лет назад

      @@bluegary59 right so they are permitted to use the 3rd lane on a 4 lane motorway. Makes perfect sense considering that on most motorways (with 3 lanes) the outside lane is for overtaking only and lorries are not allowed to go into the 3rd lane on said example motorway.
      To stop lorries using the outside lane on dual carriageways is just straight up daft though, thankfully that's not the case.

    there are many inconsiderate idiotic car drivers but this also applies to truck drivers especially on duel carriage roads like the A1 my most annoying are truck drivers overtaking other trucks that are doing 60 mph they do this by doing 61 to 65 mph they stick their indicators on and start moving across like they have the right of way this then reduces the outer lane speed that was doing 65 to 75 to 60 to 65 then the overtaking truck drivers spends the next mile and more overtaking the dam truck and the ensuing queue the overtaking truck has behind him in the outer lane total gain for the truck driver 1 or 2 mph ,pointless !the other is car drivers hogging the middle or outer lanes when there is no traffic in the left lanes this in many cases reduces the 2 or 3 lane road by 1 or 2 lanes as in this country you can not undertake vehicles so on a 3 lane road when you are correctly travelling in the left lanes you have to travel across 2 lanes to the outer lane to pass the lane hogger then have to travel back across 2 lanes to return to the left lane you were originally in ,many drivers do not understand centre lanes hogging is illegal and drivers must return to the left lane asap and sticking your indicator is not a right to pull out never has been it must be don safely and never cause other drivers to slow down or break to do so is also illegal
