Actually in the manga they used the word "kill" when Ryuga knocks someone out, because their souls kept trapped inside of L-Drago, thats why they stay in a coma, in the anime they just dont mention it to not be so scary for children.

I love how each season has that one episode where the tone just shifts. Metal Fusion was fairly light up until this point. Not to say this is like "woah that's really dark"
But to have a character that just enjoys torture and pain get introduced out of nowhere and immediately raise the stakes. Like Ryuga is a VILLAIN but he's motivated by power. Doji and Reiji genuinely enjoys watching people suffer.

Honestly their has been a trend of a bunch of people watching some of these lately first with Ninjago and Now Beyblade (all I need is more channels with Bakugan and that's the big 3 of my childhood) (I personally want to give some of the credit to the channel cbloom who's the first person I noticed reacting to those shows and think it spread). I noticed similar patterns all the time with certain anime and older movies.
My best guess is one channel reacts to something so viewers realize it's now on the table and they start asking other channels to react to it.
