What Is A Hydrostatic Relief Valve?

- www.SwimmingPoo... - A hydrostatic relief valve (HRV) is a check valve (one way valve) that is installed into the floor of a swimming pool in the main drain. The function of the HRV is to allow the ground water table surrounding the pool to equalize with the pool water. This prevents the water table from exerting an upwards force on the pool during periods of high ground water. Without a hydrostatic relief valve a pool can potentially lift right out of the ground. An HRV is required in concrete pools and fiberglass pools however most vinyl liner pools have them also even though they are not really needed due to the way a vinyl pool is built.

Do hydrostatic valves need to be rated to activate at a certain water pressure or difference in head? Do hydrostatic valves need to be tested regularly? How? Is there a flowrate requirement for hydrostatic valves so that water can flow into a pool quickly enough to prevent it floating? Is there an international standard for their design? If the hydrostatic valve is fitted but doesn't work and a pool floats can that be claimed on insurance?
Thank you
For a new gunite pool build how do you add a hydrostatic relief valve? Do you buy a main drain with a hydrostatic relief valve already installed? Also, does the hydrostatic relief valve have a PVC pipe attached to it that goes down into the ground?
I love in the desert and don't have any ground water since we get 3" of rain a year do I need one in my main drain ?
Hi,
how many would be required in the big pool? 80x30feet in a high water table area?
How often do hydrostatic valves need to be replaced?
Are there better quality valves or are they pretty standard/generic?
Standard only. They usually last about 20 years but there are a lot of factors that will affect that number, most of which relate to water quality. Basically you replace this valve every time you have access to the bottom of your pool. If you are having some work done such as replaster or repainting the pool then go ahead and replace it even if yours is less than 10 years old.
AviRay1 my pool water table is high is lot iron on the water
Swimming Pool Steve eww
So my grandmas pool leak is getting worse and I have to figure it out this season. It's still winter here in Indiana. So trying to find ideas. I'm thinking its this valve since it has been leaking over the winter pretty bad as well. I've never had the cover off of the main drain but she had the liner replaced about 6-7 years ago and the last 2 or 3 years it seams to be leaking more each season. It is a some what shallow inground due to really high water table. I'm afraid to drain it since I have no idea what kind of structure is under the liner. What would you recommend?
Is the hydrostatic valve plumbed into anything like the skimmer box or is it just a valve that goes into the ground?
Could my valve be faulty and that is why my dirty water won't clean? i.e. because ground water is getting in?
Would it be safe to drain a vinyl liner pool if I'm planning to cover it up with dirt
Swimming pool Steve, My gunnite pool emptied seemingly overnight (over two weeks), should I suspect the hydrostatic relief valve?
My pool sweeper was hung up on my drain and I was having a hard time pulling it off. Once I did, I see a corkscrew type wire coming out of my drain. Looks like most of it is out. I won't be able to retrieve it until I swim down there. BUT, after looking at these valve parts, is this possible this wire is from the relief valve? I can't even find such a thing happening through google searches LOL Maybe this wire was straight once but then the pool sweeper coiled it around while it was spinning around in circles. I just don't know ....
Mine is just a plug. I wish I knew this before I started stopping leaks in cracks. Should have pulled my plug when we pressure washed it. You live and you learn. Mine is concrete.
What is the difference between a hydrostatic valve and a main drain
Main drain connects to your pump so you can use the pump to empty the pool if needed. The hydrostatic valves are plumbed directly into the ground. So if one were to leak, your pool water would drain directly into the ground.
great explaination
Hi swimming pool Steve.
thanks 4 that Steve,
I wouldn't tell everything that EVERY concrete pool has one, because that's not true. They *should* all have one, but there's many that don't due to poor work from contractors.
I have an older pool (2007)in AZ and it doesn't have one unless it is in the skimmer basket area. There is nothing on the floor of the plaster pool.
Hydrostatic reliefs are relief valves designed to work with liquid, as the name implies. So just any old relief valve will not work. One designed for gas will not operate properly with liquid.
You’re cute
