WWI was the most useless war in Europe’s history. There was no point behind it, no ideology, no God, no point at all. Just superpowers that wanted to show off their strength. No other footage saddens me more than The Great War one. The feel of what those men - some weren’t even men, just boys 15-18 years old had to go through in those trenches, the horror of constant bombardement, mud, insects everywhere, no place to sleep comfortably. All the wasted lives of European brothers whose only difference was language and what their goverment told them. It really shocks me how this war seems to be forgotten nowadays, when everyone seems to only remember WWII. Imagine being a young European pumped up by the news that a war is starting and the opportunity to fight for your country. You’re being lied to by your own goverment, the war will be quick they say... You sign up with all your friends from the neighbourhood, see the smiles of people waving to you, shouting, wishing you luck. They just don’t know one thing, you won’t be back… Once you get there, no one gives a damn about you, you see your friends fall right next to you, men being shred to pieces by artilery fire, people going mad, you eat dog food, you live under the constant threat of being poison gassed. And then the war ends, few come back, the ones that do experience severe PTSD, shellshock, live without limbs, have no job and home. What was all of that for? Just to show that your royal family is better than your cousins? My dear Europeans, NO MORE BROTHER WARS.

@E115 "We may not speak of nation We may not speak of soil and flags" I read the text, I read Kiplings Poem "The English Flag" and I listen to Rome for a long time. Let also give you a kinda long quote from an interview: "nother issue tackled in the album is the lack of identity, with people finding a common ground in fear. People fear many things right now: migrants, the EU, banks, you name it. In lieu of these, what are the serious matters we should be concerned about? Apart from a general cultural decline, these seem, indeed, to be the matters at hand and they all essentially revolve around identity. I believe both the left and the right are mostly concerned about matters of identity, some way or other. Obsessed, even. Whether it’s about possibly losing your identities, or not being accepted for who you are. In their critique of capitalism, both the right and left might have more in common than they’d want to admit. In any case, any sort of violent overthrow of government won’t be of help here. But anywhere you look, people essentially want to buy into the same joyful adoption of nonsense, politically speaking." If you ask me, yes, this song is totally not nationalistic. I dont know if people here have listened to older lyrics and interviews with Rome/Jerome. But I have and it doesnt fit at all. He is known to provocate and challenge the listeners to listen closely. People think this is a politikal song against immigration, while everything I saw Rome saying about the song in the liyrics opposes that. So I dont care how many people are upvoting that guys comments while mine gets downvoted.

I was born in America, land of the sick and depraved. I returned to the home of my Gael and Anglo ancestors, I returned home. I never connected with America, but Europe’s culture is my culture, the culture of my forefathers. The culture of my blood. And I would not think to shed a single drop more for America, I would die for Europe. I married an English woman and I want our children to know what an astonishing place and rich culture they come from. One of perseverance, tradition, honor and principle. America’s self-loathing seems quite deserved, a symptom of long-standing depravity. But Europe’s has only saddened me.. and it has awakened something inside me. I will do what I can with everything I can. It cannot go on. Do not let foreigners and strangers tell you of your ancestors. Find them and keep what they loved and what they lived for. Hold onto who you are and do not let them take any more from you. What do they know of Europe?
European peoples are not the same and should not be treated as such, BUT we ALL share common Indo-European ancestry. our gods share the same blood, our cultures share the same origins and we all came from the same land. We must fight to protect our peoples, our cultures and our futures.
All people on this earth are my kin I don't care what land you were born in, what your heritage is or the culture you were raised in. As long as you seek to improve the life's of thoses around you and being equality then you are my brothers, sisters and non binary pals!!
What's regrettable about some of the comments here is that people's sense European unity is defined as what they oppose instead of what they should embrace. European unity (or any nation/region's for that matter) is not defined by being against something, but by rallying around constructive ideals. How many comments here speak of the fact that after thousands of years of bloodshed Europe has for decades now not had any major wars? Or the low levels of violent crime and inequality compared to the rest of the world? Or the fact how it is now expected of Europeans to travel to neighboring countries and experience and appreciate each other's cultures, or how we're making great strides to preserve our natural heritage while elsewhere they dump trash right into the rivers, or that totalitarianism and autocracy has been driven from our lands. It's far from perfect, true, but it's a far cry from the squalor of the past or abroad. I could go on, but the point is that Europe is one of the best places in the world (if not THE best) and European pride is so much more than saber rattling against immigrants and Jews, yet that's the first thing that pops into many people's brain when it's time to express it. IRONIC considering the chorus sings about people who don't focus on the greatness and potential of their homeland. That's regrettable, but what's concerning is all this talk of 'fire, iron, and blood'. I grew up in the Balkan region in the early 90's, one of my earliest memories are hearing bombs being dropped in the distance, one time my grandparents and I had to hide ourselves in the closet on a train that a roaming death squad pulled over and then marched the passengers out and executed. I sincerely hope those yapping this nonsense are teenagers too dumb to know better and not adults. Because anyone who has actually tasted war would not speak of it in such a welcoming tone, all you're doing is exposing yourselves as fools who only know of war from films and games. War is a last resort, not the first - European nations realizing this is in part what makes Europe so prosperous today. Jerome himself says as much: _"I don’t care about provocation. I care about peace. I’m a pacifist. That’s my political agenda, if I’d have to pick one. The danger we live in is partially caused by the fact that we forgot how to resolve problems together. People have built these walls and barriers around their political beliefs and affiliations. There is no dialogue anymore, just a general shutting down and aggressively shouting down of opponents."_
Thank your for these lines. They speak some great truth. I never really felt akin to the kind of people commenting here*, because they do not unite in and strive for (inner) nobleness (which is something I link with "Europe"), but for unity in hate, fear and often inferiority. Never liked that. Your concern with those who glorify war ... well my honest sympathy for your experiences in ex-jugoslavia. Glad you survived. I try to see a deeper meaning behind this glorification of war. It may not be the desire for death-troops, rapes, executions & mass-killings. It may be a longing of a different kind ... *not too many. At least not here under "ROME"-Videos; but you know what I mean. Yet I'm gladly surprised to see many reasonable, good minded people writing here.
loving something means hating something also. what you're discribing is a sanitized political opinion thats allowed to be expressed. this song touches a more deeper troubling undertone in our world of liberalism. We are ill equipped to deal with problems "together" because we no longer understand who we are. A revolt against the modern world feels like its going to begin and everybody feels it.

A great artist will circumvent their own bias and affiliations, and instead seek to captivate the spirit of a time/event/people and channel it into great artwork. This captures the European spirit of despair at the prospects of our own annihilation perfectly, thus making it a masterful work of art.
@@salokin3087 Sigh.. Which part of my comment did you not understand? Would it help if I had written "to me this captures.. etc"? This song has been incredibly important to me as I recently went through a rough sex change operation with lots of complications. My super supportive dragonkin girlfriend turned this song on right after we watched an entire season of The Handmaid's Tale and I started crying. It's obvious that Jérôme is singing about an open tolerant Europe without borders and nationalism.
As an Englishman this song resonated with me very deeply. We abolished slavery in our empire and then we did indeed throw our flag over the slavers. We forced other countries to follow suit and we went after the slavers themselves. We sent warships out to sea to intercept slave ships and raided slaver encampments. Many British sailors died to set this injustice to rights. We even took control of Zanzibar to stop the evils of the Arab slave traders and squash their particularly sadistic version of slavery. Yet, we are still the racists, apparently. Enoch Powell, that modern prophet and politician, tried to warn us. He saw what was coming. His good name has been mocked and he is seen as a vile racist, despite time having proven him right. Our capital city is now majority black and other major cities are following suit. We were never asked if we wanted this, it was done anyway and now we pay for it. At least 400 jihadi fighters have already been welcomed back into Britain. There will be blood. Those ghettos the song mentions? They won't be for the immigrants, they'll be for the few remaining white Europeans.
Thank you! I'm so sick of being beaten over the head with the slavery guilt bullshit. Why aren't we ever taught about the Arab Slave Trade or the brave sailors who died freeing Slaves? Or that the West was the first to outlaw slavery?

They just don’t know one thing, you won’t be back…
Once you get there, no one gives a damn about you, you see your friends fall right next to you, men being shred to pieces by artilery fire, people going mad, you eat dog food, you live under the constant threat of being poison gassed. And then the war ends, few come back, the ones that do experience severe PTSD, shellshock, live without limbs, have no job and home.
What was all of that for? Just to show that your royal family is better than your cousins?

I read the text, I read Kiplings Poem "The English Flag" and I listen to Rome for a long time. Let also give you a kinda long quote from an interview:
"nother issue tackled in the album is the lack of identity, with people finding a common ground in fear.
But anywhere you look, people essentially want to buy into the same joyful adoption of nonsense, politically speaking."
If you ask me, yes, this song is totally not nationalistic.

Jerome himself says as much:
_"I don’t care about provocation.
Send them to the first line in real war, they'll stop yapping and start pissing their pants.

This is so damn good. Really like this sound.
RIVERS OF BLOOD
This is one of my favorite songs by ROME!
It's coming Rome!
Rome, is still there.
Is just there.
I love the missile launchers in the background, they give this song a more ominous feeling
The first time i heard that i thought thats what it was but im still not sure
Nebelwerfers
Well, _what do they know of Europe, who only Europe know?_
They want us dead
Thank you! I'm so sick of being beaten over the head with the slavery guilt bullshit. Why aren't we ever taught about the Arab Slave Trade or the brave sailors who died freeing Slaves? Or that the West was the first to outlaw slavery?

@Deathcoldan I think we fixed much more than we broke.
His spirit is in the process of rising from the grave.
“For the coming man”.
