This album is fantastic. Seminal LP in the mid 80's Pre-cursor for drone and grunge. Sonic Youth played their 3rd gig in Melbourne in 1987 at the Corner Hotel in Richmond and this one was was the one they played in it's entirety before coming on to play. A great time for UG music. Thanks
Faaark. Crazy shit Sonic Youth in Richmond 87. Jesus... In 1987 I was 8 years old, partly 9 I guess... I imagine Melbourne's changed somewhat since those days?
yeh i saw the youth in aucklands powerstation back in thee daydream nation era and thurston introduced a song ....'this one goes out to a band we've never seen or meet, the gordons''!! wo! that intro to 'right on time'' is on at the moment-fucken hectic sheets of steel more television via big black but lacking both bands self confidence they're kiwis right and kiwis don't blow......
Have been listening to punk and offshoots of punk from 1976. Am pretty well versed especially the older stuff. Have never heard this band or of them . Unbelievably good.
First time I've heard this album in over 20 years, the 80's and 90's spawned some amazing bands in NewZealand flying nun records put NZ on the map was a sad day when the label closed down falling victim to the international corporations
FETUS PRODUCTIONS, THE STONES, SPERM BANK 5 (SUPPORTED BUTTHOLE SURFERS), Heaped upon heaps of jangly pop to numerous to name, however, one of the lesser known groups was SHOES THIS HIGH who then became the brilliant KIWI ANIMAL-Bret Haywoods(?) a great unknown
Mid life crisis is so cool!.After being a practical straight for 20 years, I begin to realise the enjoyment of reliving the habits of earlier days.Next thing I buy a house..A responsibility like having a child.Next thing along with red wine I crave some gutsy hardcore soul..All I can think of is Gordon’s. Really fits the bill!, Now I want something more in-depth... some sort of magic or ..chicly babe...Gotta have extra dimension or Go nuts. Best thing is to go with the flow. Gordon’s really hits the spot at the moment, but you can tell you need more... another spiritual hit in the veins. (metaphorically speaking). If you don’t get that you gotta screw brains out on something...preferably a woman....
The South Island music scene, especially Dunedin, is one of history's best. Dunedin has my vote as the best small city music scene ever. Sorry Athens, GA. (Yes, I know Gordons/ Bailter Space are from Christchurch)
Most of the Athens GA bands loved (and were influenced by) Flying Nun bands lol Heck, REM straight-up ripped off The Bats for a couple of songs on "Out of Time"
@@mattgilbert7347 being in the states in the mid/late 90s I found Flying Nun was on fairly constant rotate on college radio. Even into the mid/late-00s I was hearing FN often when listening to web streams. This album is circa Joy Division or early New Order and pre dates bands like the J&MC by years. They themselves might owe a debt to MoB or UV, but imo they were one of the first to be mining this sort of sound.
So after weeks of housemates stomping on stairs over my bedroom, around 1990, I became noise sensitive and irate...especially as I could feel it.Fucking nightmare!...in the middle of the night!.So instead of conveying love, I conveyed the opposite.Thought nothing of itThe next day all my housemates were sick.1 suspicious housemate asked me about it.For 1 second...was it me?I dismissed it. No way could I have that affect.Completely ignorant was I.10 years later a guy told me he had done the same thing over and over again because he thought they deserved it! He became a born again Christian...Then I realised what I did... a child playing with matches. An abuse of the life force! I grieved and grieved .The odd person (2 pp) tried to tell me,afterwards what I done, back then.It was so obscure I did not get it.Back then there was no one to relate too.Hardly anything. In NZ fuckall then.lucky the gods gave me a chance to find out what I’d done, in OZ 10 years later, by a fellow kiwi...born again.(Running away from himself I reckon.)Was so fortunate to find out what I’d done! Then the Garden Path was open to me once again.Presence of Nature ...Getting up to speed with my cat is what counts...and the Sun.
+Anarcho McTasteeFreeze to be precise...Rose Street, Chch New Zealand - I was 12 or 13 back in 1981 & we lived up the road so I got to hear them practice regularly - special times !
ChCh NZ. Alistair lived in New Brighton, I think. Dunno where they all grew up. Became "Bailter Space", made a couple more great records, moved to NYC and never really caught on. Still the best guitar sound I've ever heard, live.
If you know of anything heavier and fuller than this let me know....Crave the cave from from way back. You know where the drips are falling in front of a mountain cave.
So where does the inspiration come from to do this?.Wjth no guidance or likeminded people around, you are lost. You pay the price for this. You compromise your soul.Dont be a cork on the ocean...
Hey man, you need to spark up some smooth weed dude. Sooth your soul, all is not you, all is not your fault, all you can do is get from day today to day tomorrow
saw them in Dunedin 80s myself martin bull and dave we were the only ones there..and Dunedin calls them selfs the capital of punk..what a load of shit.
I saw this band in my teens, my ears are still ringing. Awesome, wild band.
Absolute classic never dies after 40 odd years. I'll be still listening to this when I'm 80. 💥
Did you get the jab?
I’m 94 and I’m still listening to it

Sonic Youth in Richmond 87. Jesus...
In 1987 I was 8 years old, partly 9 I guess...
I imagine Melbourne's changed somewhat since those days?
Thurston said that "everything we wanted to do, The Gordons had already done it"
I was at all of those Melbourne Gigs... the one at Chasers was the best... it was actually 1989.
is alucinante more old of sonic youth .same glenn branca god

Members of this band went on to form Bailter Space, which was equally sick
I just love the unexpected freak outs and shocks the band gives us ..pure bloody genius
One of my top 10 albums of life.

Lived next door to one of them in the 80s-got given multiple copies-all worn out now-need to see the album live(shayne Carter?)
Nah, either Alister Parker, John Halvorsen, or Brent McLachlan.
Carter was in Straitjacket Fits, a Dunedin-based band. Gordons were ChCh

Perfect first album followed by... well, best to not talk about the second album.
...if you look at it as the first Bailters album...
Years ahead of 1981 with a real rhythm section. Hillsborough hall 1980.
First time I've heard this album in over 20 years, the 80's and 90's spawned some amazing bands in NewZealand flying nun records put NZ on the map was a sad day when the label closed down falling victim to the international corporations
Flying Nun is still operating
They're still around! And no longer owned by WB I don't think

Way ahead of their time. This is a real grunge and it is not 1992.
P.S. I've got it. They've changed their name to Bailter Space, more successful band
Amen!

They sound an awful lot like Kiss. I kind of like Right on time, but I liked it better the first time I heard it when it was called "Beth."
